Just went out and bought one for me, and one for the GF. Unpacked mine ~ first thing I note is no instruction booklet, just one for warranty and safety.

Switched on and after selecting language, and using the set up function, get a list of different Wi Fi signals to select from. Chose the one with the greatest strength, and it asks me for a password, as do all the rest.

I've no idea what "password" they are on about though. Tried inserting my Virgin Media one and all I get is "authentication problems". No real idea what this means either. Obviously a security issue of some description, as there is a little padlock against the signal strength.

Two BT channels are unsecured, but although the tablet tries to connect to them, I think the signal is too weak, and it comes up as unavailable.

Anybody else had similar issues and could offer me some advice ? Or a successful Nexus 7 user ?

Thanks.

You should be choosing the one that is yours or an open/free one. Presumably the one from your Virgin cable modem/router?

If you are on Virgin then you need to find your router on the list of wi fi connections, you cant just connect to the one with the strongest signal it may be your neighbours, when you find your router and try and connect you will need your network key or password.

Do virgin routers have the network name and and password on the bottom?

See this is what is bugging me. How is the average punter supposed to even know what password, or where to look for it. There are no instructions, and a password is asked for.

I don't even know what a "network key" is to be honest. All I want to do is click and go, and not be confronted with a load of frustrating technical issues.

As a matter of fact there is a password on the base of the Virgin Media superhub. Maybe I should try that. The problem being that now I've inserted the wrong one, the option to insert another one is not coming up.

Touch and hold the wi-fi hotspot name and it should pop up a menu to delete it. Then it should refind it and when selected ask for the network key again.

Are you saying you have not used wi-fi at all, with any other device (computer, phone etc) on your Virgin box before this?

Tried the password on the superhub, with one of the 4 Virgin Media options, and it didn't work. They are now all "disabled"

Also tried holding the wi fi hotspot, and nothing happened.

Yes, my phone is Wi Fi, but I've never had to connect it. It just worked straight off.

Christ I am so pissed off with this. Paid £199 and ZILCH

In your situation I would log into the Virgin router and temporarily change the network key to something short and snappy while I checked the tablet could actually connect. Then change it back to something long and obtuse.

To be honest with you, I'm lost. Not an expert, don't even know how to access the router, nor what a "network key" is. Just want to buy things and use them with no inconvenience. That hasn't proved possible in this instance, unfortunately.

What happens if you have no home PC or laptop, and just buy the thing on its own ?

Above all, no instructions with the device. Unreal.

I'll have to call a local technician to come and look at it.

Thanks for your help guys

It's pretty basic stuff.

You don't need to call a technician. If one of your neighbours had a kid aged over 8 years old they will be able to do it for you.

Or call virgin and ask them what your Wi-Fi password is.

This is pretty basic stuff.

Well yes, I see that. It no doubt would be basic to me if I were experienced in using such things. But I'm not.

Supposing I had no other device, and therefore no password. What would I do then ? It doesn't say you have to own another device to use this one, in the ads. This is what I don't get.

But I will try getting in touch with VM. Thanks.

When you get your router it comes with a default Wi-Fi network name and password. They're normally printed on the bottom of the router or on a card. Though they can be changed.

I'm not a virgin customer so I don't know what they do.

surely the OP is on a wind up here.
no-one can be that clueless, especially someone that has enough knowledge to use a web forum!

if it's not a wind up then i suggest the OP puts the tablet back in the box, and returns it to the store.
a device like this is clearly not for you.

If you have never entered a password into your phone to enable the Wi-Fi, you do realise you are not actually using Wi-Fi at all don't you?, it will be working as you say by using your phone operators 3g/4g signal

As others have said, both the WiFi SSID (or "name") and the password should be printed on the router. As you've clearly never changed it, they will be the same.

So, you would need to go Settings > WiFi and find the NAME of the signal that matches the one above. If it says Saved underneath, you need to hold your finger on the name until you get the menu with the option to "Forget Connection". At this point, click on the name again and you'll be prompted for your key - it is the password above.

You're lucky you've never run into this problem before! How is your PC connected to the internet? You want to select the same WiFi signal and use the same network password as your PC uses. BTW once someone sets it up for you I recommend writing down your WiFi settings as more and more devices can connect these days. Such as your phone which I suspect isnt connected to your WiFi network, it's probably using the mobile network as others have said.

Have you tried dipping the tablet in the toilet? Works for me.

It's a wind up.

Look at the label at the back of the SuperHub. It probably refers to it as 'passphrase'

I had a similar issue. Plugged it in and left it overnight, in case it needed to download any patches, yet come the morning still no toast. Apparently I need to purchase the optional 'bread package' which NO ONE told me a about. Rip off Britan.

Problem is if your router's Wi-Fi wasn't password protected then anybody in range of it would be able to use your internet connection. At best they'd just be using your connection to surf the net for free, at worse they'd be using it to download child porn and the police would soon be knocking at your door.

That's why these days routers come secured by default.

ETA: the routers Wi-Fi password will be case sensitive. So make sure the capital letters and the lower case letters are exactly the same as the password shown on the bottom of the router.

OK, so I've done it now. VM told me which No to use on the hub.

It wasn't a wind up, I promise you. It's simply that I have NEVER used a tablet before, and there were no instructions. All it asked for was a password, but didn't say what sort of password. Didn't realise that "password" in this sense, meant "router key", nor where to look for it. Was literally floundering in the dark.

I admit I'm embarrassed that it was in the end so childishly simple, but if you don't have that specific knowledge to begin with, you're not going to know. I'm not psychic, and a password could mean anything, as we have so many.

Anyways thanks for your help and comments.

It did - that's exactly what it said.
