Really disagree here. AV is a help, but doesn't patch the insecure parts of the Operating System at all.
I have a server in France - around 500 people per day try to hack into it. They never get in because it's Linux. But as soon as support for XP ends, all hackers need to do is wait for the next hotfix and reverse engineer the security flaw for XP. Most of my hacker traffic comes from Iran and China. This can involve your machine being turned into a zombie for SPAM or DDNS attacks, a host for cryptolocker. anything. Silently. If you must use XP - create a new user account that is limited and use that for general use. Set a password on an Administrator account. If you need admin rights, you can run any program as Administrator, which will prompt you for the password. This gives basic UAC-like security for XP. |

Thank you for this advice. The business I work for use a Dell machine from 2003; I'm not sure if they plan to upgrade the machine (quite frankly, they need to, but I'm an employee so can't really them what to do!) but seeing as it's used for a variety of things I'll mention this method to my Boss rather than them losing private data.

It's frustrating when you know the lifecycle of long running is coming to an end and you know your Boss won't have a back up plan for the "worst case" scenario.
I have to use it sometimes to put stuff on the EPOS system but the software is buggy as hell and crashes far too easily; it's a PITA to have to wait nearly 10 minutes to use it again so I try and stay away from the bl00dy thing! |

Yep! I think I'd better spend Saturday putting Linux onto the remaining two XP computers in our house. I have a desktop and a laptop to sort out. The desktop is from 2003 and probably ready for the tech scrapheap and the laptop is from late 2004.
Have an older PC? Try the new Ubuntu Linux-based LXLE http://www.pcworld.com/article/20318...ased-lxle.html[/quote] |

XP Out of Support
Saw a thread in GD.
Might be worth getting this pinned (although not sure how to achieve this). Users are getting a pop up that tells them that XP will be out of support http://blogs.technet.com/b/uktechnet...fications.aspx Unsurprisingly, they think it might be a scam or don't know what to do. So I am thinking a number of threads might being appearing over the next few days asking what to do. |

It's amazing the amount of ignorance of the event and the ramifications. Utterly astounding.
Ostriches spring to mind. |

You can't expect Msoft to support XP forever. When XP was released - 12-13 years ago, Apple had the Puma OS which its given up security updating years ago... so Msofts support has lasted alot longer than that.
Although I do think that Msoft should extend their support for a number of years yet... if only for pensioners and those on tight budgets who can't afford an upgrade... Anyone who can afford it should upgrade... but I do feel sorry for those that can't fork out the cash for a new machine and Windows 7/8 |

Ostriches spring to mind. If you aren't interested in computing news and just browse the stuff you are actually interested in,then this pop up nag that has appeared will the first news they have of XP's impending forced obsolescence. |

Discussed at great length on the XP thread of this forum.
Microsoft already extended XP's support beyond it's original life cycle. Can't really expect them to keep patching up the holes for eternity. The simple fact is that it is now time to upgrade your OS to Win 7 or Win 8.1 (if you don't like the start screen, you can install classic shell for free, takes 2 minutes, gets your start menu back, and you can ignore the tiled interface entirely). If your machine is really old (pre 2004) it may not be able to cope, then it's time for a new computer. With desktops costing as little as £200, this isn't too bad. You can of course install Linux on old machines. If you have software which only runs on XP: If it's a 16-bit dos application, this will likely run happily in DOSbox You can install a Windows XP VM in VirtualBox to run the application in question. Note that in Win 7 or 8, there are very few programs that won't run when you select XP compatibility mode and run as administrator. Reasons not to stick with XP regardless: - No security patches, leaving vulnerabilities in the system. Not just for viruses, other malware, data theft etc - No stability patches or driver updates, meaning newer peripherals (printers etc) will not support XP any more. - Less vendor support - Most software is not written from scratch, it uses things like the .NET framework, and these frameworks will not support XP when newer versions are released. You will find that the newer (and safer) versions of third party software will not install on XP (this has already happened with Firefox on Win2000, despite it sharing most of its code with XP) - No support for the later versions of Office. Office 2003 will also lose support soon. Microsoft may change the file formats in later versions of Office, and Office 2003 won't be updated to be able to edit these files. Office 2007, the last version that can be installed on XP has already lost mainstream support, and extended support ends in 2017. |

Office 2010 is fully supported under Windows XP.
Office 2010 also has to be Service Pack 1, Service Pack 2 after 14/10/14. |

If it is better to have that thread pinned, then by all means, but I think it would be good to have something pinned. |

I was running some software today on XP which won't run on anything newer, I used it to decorrupt some database files.
Won't run on anything newer due to CMD being ruined in newer versions, the NETBIOS removal is just evil. |

Plus, there's nothing to suggest you destroy XP machines, just connecting them to the internet or not scanning any new data you introduce to them beforehand would be inadvisable. They can make great retrogaming jukeboxes. |

There's a useful, but limited, article about upgrading from XP here http://www.theguardian.com/technolog...-windows-xp-pc
Its main failings are not mentioning upgrading to Windows 7 (the feedback from local computer repair outlets is that this option is popular) and the option to upgrade to Linux in its different forms, e.g. http://www.pcworld.com/article/21076...-a-new-pc.html and I had to include a link to this article here http://betanews.com/2014/01/30/windo...t-windows-8-1/ just for the cartoon. |

Only a week to go now! Would it be wise to run updates on the old desktop before the end as I'll be dual booting that one with a Linux distro?

After that WU won't accept your machine and will tell you that the updates are no longer available. |
