A few years ago i did win 98 in a VM and it still patched itself so i'd imagine they'll leave it alone as far as possible

There is no need to do anything if you don't want to, all thats happening is that MS won't be doing any more updates for it, theres many options such as putting on a version of windows still being supported (vista/7/8/8.1) or even linux but nothing will happen to your machine when support runs out (no sudden bursting into fire, declaring its love for the washing machine) and so long as you have a decent anti virus and malware protection and don't do anything stupid you should be reasonably fine

Out in the Sticks!
I am a 'pensioner' out of touch with computer 'people' and use my computer running Windows XP just for my own use - no games, etc just WP and Internet. So no-one to ask for advice or talk over my options. I know I have a decision to make and wondered what your thoughts are
I used to have a McAfee subscription, for years, but always seemed to be having issues when updates came through. Had to pay £50 for help but will not go back to them after all the issues, so, have been running Microsoft Security Essentials and Malware Bytes AntiMalware. I too have had the warning and my PC also states unprotected with Microsoft Security Essentials. My computer Dell Inspiron 530S has suited me fine but has been 'playing up' lately and am now wondering whether to pay someone to upgrade it/service it or go out and buy new machine. Thoughts would be appreciated - thank you. |

a 530s is a xp/vista machine but slap it up to 4gb and you could run win 7 nicely but at the same time you have to consider the chance of hardware failure due to age, there must be plenty of people around who'll help with some good advice locally and who knows there may be someone a few miles away on here

Thank you - so to upgrade to 4 gb and install Win 7 might be worth a try. I know sometimes the disc drive, that I hardly use, can get stuck sometimes and needs a few arrempts and then it will open. Apart from that I have used it everyday - so - it could be getting tired I suppose.
Also, not sure what i am talking about but would it need an upgrade with its processor? |

On the anti-virus software front you can download Avira for free which will support XP for another year at least, if you decide against upgrading. Microsoft Security Essentials is not so good as it use to be in protection anyway (you would need to uninstall MSE). http://www.avira.com/en/index |

Thank you. Should I uninstall MS Essentials first from remove programs? Then click on the link you gave?
In the meantime maybe I just ask someone in our local paper, who advertise and will come to my home, to provide me with a quote. I think it might be better to watch what they are doing rather than leave my machine. |

Update
I un-installed first and then downloaded Avira. Should I also download the Avira Browser Safety? I still have the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware installed. Please could you point me in the direction on this forum to discuss pro's and con's of 'makes/styles/Win8' on computers. I have been pleased with my 19" screen but as it is a 'tower' I suppose it is time to change to 'laptop' or whatever they are called. I do like the large monitor though. So would appreciate some thoughts. |

Thankyou LION8TIGER. So that is the Virus scan sorted.
Next issue - computer not running very well keeps stalling, etc, etc. I have been onto DELL forum (Dell Inspiron 530s) and it sounds like another language but it seems I can install some hardware into my tower and buy Windows 7. Someone said that it could be XP issues that is causing the problems. They have advised programs to run to check hardware, etc. before I do anything. Just trying to get my head around whether this is the next stage to try before I go and buy a new computer - which I don't want to do - I like my monitor and this machine suits my needs. |

What we don't know is how long Microsoft will leave the Windows Update website online for - as later versions don't use it. Presumably a year or so, as certain organizations will still receive XP updates after tomorrow (like the UK govt). |

To see if you need to do any upgrades, run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor - what does it say for your current system? |

Well run that and printed off 7 pages of info. Looks like I need to perform a custom installation of 32-bit and 64-bit
It really is all 'foreign' to me but I did notice that it states ' your PC memory doesn't meet the 3 GB requirement for running Windows XP mode on 64-bit Windows 7. When running XP mode, you might experience poor performance.' Does this last sentence explain why my computer is having problems now? Don't know what an earth I am talking about. Sorry............. |

Anyway, as long as the hardware is OK, it should cope with Windows 7 fine. You may as well install the 64bit version of Windows 7 (or 8) 'XP mode' was a way of running XP within a Windows 7 install, and made it easier to run old XP programs that won't work with Windows 7. However XP mode was only available on the 'Pro' version of Windows 7, and support for it is being dropped, at the same time as XP itself, so I wouldn't worry about that. |

Is all of your hardware compatible? A custom install is one where all programs and data on the pc are wiped, and Windows 7 will install from scratch. This is standard when upgrading from XP. Back up your data to an external hard drive before you upgrade. |
