A security fix for IE 8 is coming.

Presumably another round of hotfixes.

If anyone needs to download security essentials, do it today as all links to the xp version will be removed very soon.

I'd suggest downloading Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor from here http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/downl...ils.aspx?id=20, install it on your laptop, switch on all your peripheral devices such as printers, scanners, etc. and then run the Upgrade Advisor software and see what it says.

You might need to get help from a local PC repairer to upgrade the laptop and there might be the costs of any hardware, labour and the Windows 7 licence to consider so I'd suggest getting a quote first before you go down this route.

Alternatives are sticking with XP but with good third party firewall and antivirus installed (see http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showp...&postcount=295) and avoiding using XP administrator accounts or switching to Linux (plenty of advice in this thread and this one here http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1942343). Indeed, someone I know switched from Win 7 on a laptop to Linux in order to really speed things up. I've got a fossil backup PC that runs XP and I'll probably stuff Lubuntu 11.10 on it when l can get around to it.

head over to the MSE forums and see if you can follow this guide
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/....php?t=2436849

take it step by step and ask if you are not sure of anything

e.g Check your printer and scanner to see if they have a driver for Win 7

Backup up anyway now whilst still using XP , so if anything goes wrong you can always restore. http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx
Info on how to do that is contained in link I gave you above.

RIP XP.

Though I am glad that I will no longer need to produce user guides for it.

Are non-critical program and hardware updates still going to be available through Windows Update? If not I might as well disable the Automatic Updates service from running.

As far as I understand it "thats it" other than the defender updates but i think thats mainly since vista uses them as well

My understanding is that there will be no more updates at all.
Microsoft will be supplying updates to the corporations/governments that have decided to pay for continued support, everyone else has been ditched.

All the existing updates will be available for a while at least. Don't forget if you change your configuration (say installing a program that requires .Net Framework or Visual C++ etc.) or you install Office or some other Microsoft program, your update requirement may change and the automatic update service may be required.

If you run MSE then the Automatic Update service will check your MSE signature/database/pattern if you don't update manually.

I'd imagine a supported program on an unsupported platform will require the hotfixes to be installed manually with no guarantee of support or success. e.g. Office 2007 on XP. Or even MSRT next month?

Can anyone that used it remember what happened in the case of Windows 2000 in such a scenario?

Thanks.

I bet they will still keep offering to install the Bing bar with it though.

So if MS are still producing updates for these customer's if new exploits are found then why not make the updates public?

They're custom jobs to solve problems the customer is facing and won't have the full testing that goes into most patches and who would pay loads of money for extended support if all they had to do was wait a week and pick it off windowsupdate

Microsoft make me very angry. I've got Windows XP (which I'm perfectly happy with), the money-grubbing bastards at Microsoft run by a billionaire suggest that I upgrade to Windows 8 (costs money which I haven't got), & if my pc is too old to be compatible with Windows 8 then I should buy a new pc (costs money which I haven't got)! If I don't then all sorts of things have been threatened by them, like basically my pc no longer being able to operate.

It'll work fine today and in a million years just its now "as is" theres no more updates thats all...you don't have to spend a single penny if you don't want to and if you're happy then you have to do the square root of f-all just make sure you have good AV/Malware protection and you'll be fine

Bib-

Your PC will continue to operate as it currently is but you are taking a risk to your personal data by continuing to use it after this point. There are plenty of alternative options available to you such as memory and/or OS upgrade, keeping the machine off the net, or switching to some form of Linux designed for old computers. I would suggest getting a friend or family member who is IT-literate to take a look over your PC and advise you on the best course of action.

MS have provided XP support for 13 years. They also provided a shedload of notice beforehand of its demise. This is way more than you would get out of any other major tech firm. XP has had a good run but has been holding technology back for a while. It is time to let it finally rest.

2 hours and 17 mins to go until Windows 8, Windows 7 and Windows Vista get a update that XP won't get, It will be interesting to see what happens to these silly people who don't upgrade including banks.

Quote:
“Some of those existing XP users have struck deals to get security fixes from Microsoft while they complete their migration away from the ageing code.

The UK government has signed a £5.5m deal for extended support. Similarly the Dutch government has signed a "multi-million euro" deal to obtain help for the 40,000 PCs running XP used by the nation's civil servants.”

I suspect banks will be a bit more security concious than you are giving them credit for and will either already have moved away from XP or have a similar agreement/contract with Microsoft to continue to receive security patches.

Quote from here.
