RIP Windows XP Thankfully I only know one or two refuseniks who can't be arsed to upgrade to anything newer. I refuse to support them

The only thing that people miss from XP is the theme.

Every new OS since XP was simply a corporate method of increasing sales.
To them, giving the public what they want is of near zero use if they already have it.

I got bored of the theme after about a year. I ran Windowblinds themes on it after that.



So, in your opinion, Windows 7 does not have any real improvements over XP?

You can do that only partially if your software is for more than let's say 50 people, not mentioning people never really know what they want anyway.

I hated the theme at first so I used the Windows 2000 style Start menu and theme. That's what I had on my old laptop. I'm used to OSX and Windows 7 now, both of which look more modern. XP looks dated now and has done for a few years.

the web says that windows xp security ended 8/4/2014 so how come last night the yellow shield appeared when i went to turn my computer off it automaticy downloaded the security updates for the 9/4/2014 anyone else this as happened to?

the MSE updates have another year but only them and no other security updates

The last set of updates for Windows XP were released on Tuesday (08/04/2014), so seeing them the next day on your computer makes sense.

Updates that have already been released will still be available to download for at least a year.

There won't be any more updates from now on - that's what the "end of support" refers to.

Basically you need to upgrade. Windows XP was a moving target for malicious hackers, now it's a sitting duck.

It depends from nothing upwards but without knowing what you do and what you have its impossible to give a proper assessment and surely you must know a IT geek somewhere who can pop over for a cup of tea and a few biscuits and give some honest options

I will carry on with XP.
I use the 2 Comodo browsers so can use a virtual desktop for browsing the net. My feeling about the warnings re XP are akin to the warnings about the Millium bug. That didnt happen.

If you have responsible browsing habits you should be safe even without MS holding your hand.

Last time I checked you could still download (previously released) updates for obsolete versions of Windows. There is no real reason for MS to remove them from their website. Same thing applies with Apple and Mac OS.

So how do you think you access eBay and your bank without 'browsing'?

In a few months the media will be full of stories of people getting their XP PCs hacked.

Having checked on my one surviving machine with XP installed (a dual boot with Ubuntu), I don't think there is a way. The logic is that MSE is there to warn the user about threats to their computer, end-of-support is an ongoing threat, ergo the user needs to be told about it. Repeatedly.

I was a refusenik (in my second dual-boot setup) but by sheer chance, last week for the first time ever in 20 years of computing, I had a short power cut (or power surge) that corrupted the operating system while using it. Although I lost no data thanks to a Linux bootable disc, nothing but nothing would make XP boot after that and I couldn't face the hassle of restoring it, so I bit the bullet and now have a nice shiny Windows 7 as my 2nd O/S.

Well after all, I do need a way to escape that pesky Windows 8 I have as my main boot, from time to time! But I am sad to lose you, o trusty Windows XP.
