wash in wash out hair dyes

I have mainly grey hair and want to dye it but I worry about allergic reactions so would prefer to use wash in wash out hair dye. Superdrug have brought out a new range recently but the pack says do not use on bleached or grey hair. Can anyone tell me why you cannot use on grey hair? Is it because the colour won't take or the opposite, that the colour will be more intense and won't wash out after a few washes as normal?

Hi there

Well I would think that a wash in wash out dye cannot be used on mainly grey hair because it won't have the chemicals in it required to dye your hair from grey to whatever colour you want.

In order to dye grey hair you would need a permanent hair colour. Why not try a boxed one and do the skin test as it instructs and see if you have a reaction or not? You won't know until you try, if that's OK then do a strand test - dye one section of hair and see if you're happy with the result before doing your whole head.

I just got a Swartzkkopf permanent dye and did a strand test - compared to other permanent dyes it did not smell strong at all, other dyes I've used have made my eyes sting and water - awful stuff. This one was from the colour mask range.

Good luck!
