multi-region question
Milky Joe

Hi all,

I heard that even if you have multi-region, not *all* dvds from every region may work on it. Something about RCE and other formats?

So, does anyone have a website which tells you what dvds play on what players? Thanks.

yeah some DVDs have extra encoding called Region Coding Enhanced, basically these discs dont play on region free players.

Sadly though, to answer your question, it all depends on the type of modification done to the player as some then can handle RCE and some cant.

to give an example, the Toshiba SD 210 is region 2 only when sold in the UK, then some dirty little electronics company then modify the player to be multi region, BUT not all region mods allow you to then play RCE discs, some do and some dont.

sooo... i dont think there would be a site that can tell you this becuase its a retailer specific question, I would think the best thing to do would be to find a player you like and then find someone who sells it modified which is also RCE compliant, each vendors site should say if its RCE or not RCE.

hope that helps

right, i was going to get that player from them but they didnt have any in stock.

well their site says that they cant play RCE discs, but when i emailed them, they emailed me a word document which apparantly has details to get it to play RCE discs, but it didnt make any sense to me!!

if you want to email me i will gladly forward the email as well as the phone number i was given if i couldnt get it to work (i had placed the order, but they later rang and said it wasnt in stock so i cancelled)

The Sony Davs 800 multi-region does play RCE. Maximuss, another forum member purchased one on friday and i viewed it on Saturday. I am ordering one myself this week.

For more general help on these matters, go to www.homecinema.mcmail.com

I have found this site very useful.

Rule of thumb if if its a manual region select then RCE wont affect it, Auto may be tripped up. There are a lot of workarounds also if your player isnt RCE capable, check www.dvd.reveiwer.co.uk I think for some , or check www.google.com and search for your player in there.
Also there aint that many RCE discs at the mo and most of em are crap anyways so I wouldnt worry too much at the mo.
