Can somebody please explain how these work. Is it possible by using the switch to get the full existing signal strength through only one of the ports ?

Perhaps you need to tell us the make and model of the item in question?

A link to the Maplin item then?

A passive/unpowered splitter will certainly degrade the signal to each output. A powered splitter/booster will be better in that regard. What has thrown me is that I have never seen a co-ax splitter with a switch?

Two different animals

A splitter has one input and multiple outputs that are active at all times.

A switch has one input and multiple outputs but only one is active at any one time. As a result there is little effect on the signal strength.

Two way one here

Ignore the fact that it says satellite, it's just a rf switch that has dc pass on one port to allow lnb control. It will work fine at UHF frequencies.

as said above there are 2 different sorts of splitters. the cheaper resistive type being higher loss. the wilkinson being better. but depends what u want it for. if a digital signal then loss is not important provided u stay above the "digital cliff".

most things like that at farnell components. url : cpc.co.uk. use search keywords then scroll through the list that appears for nearest item you want ......
