My favourite episodes involve the story arc of series six, I can watch them over and over

I agree about the 11th Doctor's first console room, that's my favorite from new Who although I do like the latest one as well, particularly the things on top that go spinning around.

I never liked the 9th and 10th Doctor's console room very much.

Talking about the TARDIS, one thing that annoys me a little with new Who is having the dematerializing noise constantly being in the background when the TARDIS is in flight rather than having it just make the noise when materializing and dematerializing. I think if I was a companion and had to keep hearing that non-stop while the ship was in flight it would start to drive me crazy (and I do actually really like the sound it makes but not constantly). *Groan, wheeze, groan, wheeze, trumpeting elephant noise, groan, wheeze * Argh!

I don't know how popular or unpopular "Voyage of the Damned" and "The Next Doctor" are although there does seem to be a percentage of fans who don't like them but I really like both episodes with "The Next Doctor" being a particular favorite (among other things, I think David Morrissey does a great job).

I agree with this, my entire family and I gathered around and watched it on Christmas day (of which I'm pretty much the only "fan") and thoroughly enjoyed it, especially the cyber king part, which we marveled at as a great CGI creation.

Then I came on here to see it universally derided and I lost a lot of heart in fandom....
Which brings me to:

Mainstream opinion about Doctor Who is a lot more relevant than fanboy obsession such as this forum.
(Mainstream fans enjoy the show for what it is, 45 mins of fun entertainment and don't try to pick holes based on a line written to make an episode in 1973 dramatic contradiction something said in 1986 etc)

From the Christmas Special:

Matt's stupid little spoken word rap "you always remember who you were" was terrible and much much worse than "I don't want to go" (Which actually had my entire family welling up, again 180 opposite to "fandom")

Almost lost my breakfast laughing at that one!

Going for unpopular opinions.

I always liked
The Long game
The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe

but did not like
The Impossible Astronaut and
The Doctor's Wife

However sometimes I get the feeling with Dr Who, is that your frame of mind going into an episode, really effects how much you will enjoy it or otherwise.

A fairly tiresome retread of the 'What if?' scenario which is well played out in sci-fi it features a terrible and distracting performance from Piper, an annoyingly melodramatic turn from Tate and some of the worst supporting performances the show has ever had. Witness the token superstitious peasant maid of indistinct ethnic origin who crosses herself, makes crazy eyes and would seem insultingly out of place in a Roger Corman 70s B-movie. Not to mention the feeble attempt to give this clear filler story some gravitas by throwing in the ludicrous and almost offensive notion that within a few short months Britain will have descended so far into the abyss that we begin on a route to becoming another Nazi Germany. Utter Tosh. Yes the scene with Wilf and the salute is nicely acted and poignant...until you engage your brain. How this episode makes it into the top 150 let alone top 20 is baffling. And I didn't even mention the beetle backpack once! Says it all. ”

This basically sums up what I think of Turn Left.

I didn't have a problem with the Rose and the Doctor romance per se, but I hated how it seemed to take over and smother everything else. I didn't like Mickey, but I disliked more how we were supposed to side with those two making fun of him and being all "We're the cool kids and the ultimate power couple, you should be grateful we even tolerate you, LOSER!". Martha was never allowed to be anything other than "Not Rose". Who cares if universes will be destroyed, what's important is that this love story is the greatest love that ever loved. Bluergh. There were companions before Rose, and there have been companions since. She wasn't that special.

Boom Town is a great episode.

I found a lot of the acting in the RTD era hammy and the over-the-top. Captain Jack and The Master were both irritating beyond belief for this. So was Donna when she was just written as a sketch show character.

Having said that, I quite liked RTD's sense of humour. OK, not that the farting Slitheen etc, but I admit I liked the "Master Race" joke in the End of Time, even if all the stuff that had to be put in to make it was pointless.

A Town Called Mercy was a much worse episode than Dinosaurs On A Spaceship.

I don't agree at all with people who think Clara hasn't got a personality. Maybe she's been sidelined by plot and needs an episode focusing on her, but there's nothing wrong with her character.

I really enjoyed 'The Almost People'/'The Rebel Flesh' which doesn't seem to have too many admirers. Wouldn't claim it's a classic, but think it's a good, solid, rather 'traditional' Who story...well acted and characterised, with two superb cliffhangers and Matt in top form; both of him!

The question marks on the costume where universally rubbish, except for McCoy's umbrella which was genius.

Peter Pratt was the best Master

Paradise Towers if done in any other era of the programme would be regarded as a classic

I like Love & Monsters

Colin Baker's outfit should be brought back for an episode and used as a joke

A proportion of Doctor Who fans are a complete embarrasment

Despite being the best Doctor, Tom Baker is the least talented actor to play the role.

Costume aside I actually like Colin Bakers Doctor more than Tennants.

Midnight is one of the worst new Who episodes.Too derivative and too dull.

The Time of The Doctor was an excellent swan song for Smith. I loved it!

As soon as the series started jettisoning the humour in favour of dreary plots on universal entropy and other hard science, etc, the series started going downhill.
It clearly bored Tom Baker into leaving and aside from a few independent high points, it bored the viewers too.

The humour is most important in Doctor Who, everything else is secondary.
If I wanted scientific waffle (and it would be waffle, not accurate) and dry non-humour, I'll watch the later series of Star Trek (Voyager mainly )

Matt Smith's Doctor, with his insistence that uncool things like fez's and bow ties are cool when they aren't, coupled with his brash attitude, reminds me a lot more of Colin Baker than the famed Troughton comparisons, which I've never seen.
10 seems more Troughton mixed with Baker tbh.

- Series 4 and 5 of The Sarah Jane Adventures was much more enjoyable than series 5 and 6 of Doctor Who.

- Never warmed to Amy at all, I found her annoying and I was glad to see the back of her. Definitely one of my least favourite companions, not to mention the actress was pretty mediocore too.

- I wish the Weeping Angels only appeared for Blink.

- Donna Noble was the Tenth Doctor's best companion

- I never hated Martha in series 3, but I thought she was better in series 4

- I was never keen on Matt Smith as The Doctor. There were only a few scenes of his that I liked but I don't think he was best suited for the role. (I didn't like the pairing with River either).

- "Bow ties aren't cool".

- I found the 50th Anniversary episode quite disappointing and underwhelming. (The Zygons were awful!)

I enjoyed Sylvester McCoy's first season more than I did his second and third ones.

I haven't minded any of the child actors that have been in the series since 2005 at all.

Yes, I liked the CyberKing. I know some fans think it's goofy but it's not as if there aren't enough goofy things in Doctor Who to go around anyway.

I also liked all of the dialogue between Jackson Lake and the Doctor particularly the part about the companions, the part with the fob watch, the Doctor opening up the door and a Cyberman is there, Lake's "sonic" screwdriver and a number of other things also. Just a really enjoyable episode all around.

Yes, we forgot how important Fob Watches were around 10's era don't we?

I also remember a lot was made about The Doctor not quite closing the door properly at the end and people theorising that someone could hijack the Tardis that way.

The Next Doctor must be one of the most underrated episodes tbh.

Some more things for this thread:

I think David Tennant had a lot more chemistry with Catherine Tate than he did with Billie Piper. I also think he had more with Kylie Mingoue and Elisabeth Sladen as well.

As a Donna fan, I didn't really appreciate the Rose angst, Rose herself or the other companions horning in on Donna's episodes, particularly since there were so few episodes with the Doctor and Donna only to begin with. I would have much preferred to have one whole series (or more) with just the Doctor and Donna with a few episodes also including Wilf.

I like both "The Lodger" and "Closing Time" and think Craig would have made a really good companion.

I also think Nasreen from "The Hungry Earth" had some nice chemistry with the Doctor and also would have made a good companion.

That reminds me...

The Silurian 2 parter is series 5 is one of the worst episodes ever.
It didn't fail by trying to be too ambitious and falling flat, no it committed one of the worst Doctor Who crimes:
It was just BORING

It was Doctor Who by the numbers: 2 opposing sides filled with basically peaceful people but the chance for a peaceful resolution is ruined by a warrior type on each side pushing for a military conflict.

Then the Doctor wanders in, points out how stupid both sides are being and sits them down and gets them talking.
Nothing that we haven't seen 100 times over since the 60s.

I'm sure a couple of fans were happy the Silurians were back but aside from a bit of tounge action (oooh-err) they have been the most disappointing return of all of the original monsters imo )

I also think the 11th Doctor is something of a hypocrite when it comes to guns. In "The Hungry Earth" he basically lectures and is even a little menacing to Ambrose, a woman worried about her family's safety and yet in "The Day of the Moon", the Doctor says that River has her own gun and doesn't mind shooting people and that he shouldn't like it but he kind of does. He also says that his "naughty friend" will kill some of the Silence.

Apparently it's a hoot for the Doctor to have River armed and killing people but a woman worried about her family is subject to the Doctor getting on his high horse (and even saying "No. No weapons. It's not the way I do things). Oh, okay, Doctor.

Yes, I really liked the funny part about the fob watch-the suspenseful scene, the ominous music and then part of the watch falls out and the Doctor says maybe not and Lake says it's more for decoration.

I thought Matt Smith was very good as The Doctor, but I felt that he was too similar to David Tennat's Doctor in many ways.
I can't fault his performance, but I would have preferred something more different from the David Tennant interpretation.
Each regeneration I welcome a fresh change for The Doctor so hopefully he's as different as can be from the previous one.

Which I suppose is why I'm quite excited at the prospect of Peter Capaldi as The Doctor.

I actually quite like 'The Long Game' and 'The Idiot's Lantern'.
I think there's a lot to like about them.

I also think that 'Love and Monsters' had some merit to it.
There was massive potential for that episode, and the ELO music lent a certain atmosphere to it that I can't put my finger on.
It was probably poorly executed, but I've seen several episodes since that didn't have much to them at all.

I'd rather have bad episodes which are very interesting, than episodes which are simply dull, unimaginative, and boring.

I don't know whether this is an unpopular opinion but River is a big mistake and one of the reasons that almost ruined Matt's doctor for me. ( and Amy too but I have already posted that a few pages back).

River is arrogant, condescending and irritating. I can't fathom her smart *ss attitude. It was wrong to create a character that at times has superior knowledge of what will happen in the future above the doctor, with events of her past being in his future. Although I don't think the doctor should know everything, I still like for the doctor to eventually be the one that sorts things out with the help of the companion.

The way the story and dialogue was written with River he was made to look like a buffon many times. For example I hated the whole thing with doctor not knowing the function or not using some of the buttons in the Tardis, and being showed it by River. I hated having him playing second fiddle to River and her story arc.

This is a man who has been flying the Tardis for hundreds of years and somehow River knows more than he does about it.

I hope to never see River come back again.
