I didn't know about reconstructed episodes, I just listened to the audios for the missing ones. They had their own charm, though, since they had narrative links from past companions explaining the visuals when necessary.

Yep, I somehow translated it as "episodes of serials" instead of "serials of series".

Started my Christmas drinking early today

One or my new plans for he new year is to start watching the Pertwee and Baker years. This starts as soon as soon as my order for Spearhead arrives.

Terror of the Autons

A brilliant episode, possibly the best I've seen so far, a good return for the Autons and introduction of Jo Grant. My only concern is that the show is reverting back to the typical female companion following Liz Shaw's departure. The Master is a brilliant villain, certainly looking forward to seeing more of him.

9/10

How do you know the master will appear in series 8? I am guessing you mean season 8, which was first shown in 1971

Just watched the first 2 episodes of Spearhead today. My first experience of Who was watching it live during the Pertwee years but I think I started at the end of season 8 or maybe the beginning of season 9, thus meaning I have never seen season 7 before apart from Inferno which I will be re-watching when I get to that one.

So far so good. There is an obvious difference in acting styles, effects, production etc compared to modern who and this is to be expected. I was though really surprised to see the difference between this episode (1970) and the early Hartnell stuff which was only seven years previous. This isn't my mind deceiving me as I made a deliberate effort to watch a lot of the early stuff this year. Seven years is not a long time so things obviously moved on a lot in that time.

With regards to the story, I am really enjoying it and so far it has been a good and steady built up to introducing the third Doctor. Let's see how the next two episodes pan out.

On a different matter, I have to say that the quality of the restoration (I have the Blue-Ray version)is impeccable.

I meant season 8 of classic Who.

I know, is certainly hope he doesn't attempt the same type of invasion each time!

I just tend to pick out the odd story to watch, but I've probably covered a sizable chunk of the black and white episodes now.

I love them. Boring, appalling acting, appalling special effects, often very rubbish script, dreadful costumes...the list is endless.

And yet it's all just so much fun in it's own right. I can't get enough of the classics, especially the proper old ones.

I have to agree, The Dominators is seen by many as the worst DW story ever, but there's something about it that I just love.

First ever classic Doctor Who episode I watched was one of the parts (the one where they grow the frog) of The Claws of Axos, I was really young too but I loved it, and it made me love Pertwee.

I think it's all worth watching, I don't understand why people hate the McCoy era, aside from dodgy title sequence; Ace and 7th Doc are great and some good stories in there.

I should probably do the same, I've only ever seen a few serials and I only focused properly on a few (City of Death, Four to Doomsday, The Claws of Axos and The Happiness Patrol - loved them all).

I agree that the McCoy era was unfairly criticised, as it almost saved a sinking ship. A lot of people don't give it a fair chance because of Season 24, when the next two seasons are a massive improvement.

Spearhead in space now viewed in it's entirety.

This was excellent and although dated slightly it was dated in a very good way. The story was very clear and acted well and very entertaining all round.

The only comically dated bit was in episode four where the Doctor was fighting the Nestine.

Silurians next when I get a copy.

Is it a worthy sendoff for him?

It had a lot of Pertwee's signature stuff. It had a car chase with Bessie chasing the Whomobile and the Doctor in a gyrocopter followed by the Doctor flying in the Whomobile and then chasing a speedboat in a hovercraft! He certainly displayed his James Bond credentials in that one

There was the usual fisticuffs, a reference to Jo Grant, the return of the Metebelis crystal some more of his Time Lord history and what is probably the first reference to a kind of Watcher. There was bravery from Sarah Jane and some ingenuity and self-sacrifice from the Doctor. There was even a return of the UNIT threesome, although it wasn't a UNIT story. They'd certainly let their hair grow I noticed

The spiders aren't quite up to today's CGI standards but they do the job.

All in all, I'd say it was an excellent send-off but I'm looking forward to getting into Tom Baker now

Don't worry though! Series 7 is good, and there are a few other good ones along the way. I've always liked Day of the Daleks and everyone likes The Daemons. And then Baker will turn up eventually.”

Everything I love about the Pertwee era, in other words, and what makes it by far my favourite. Pertwee's first season is, for me, the best of classic Who. And by a long chalk.

I think this is true. Huge strides were made during John Pertwee's era. We had memorable villains introduced such as the Master and the Sea Devils, and it was here where Unit was really developed. This was at a time when the show received much less hype. Nowadays we are used to seeing TV programmes get a lot of attention in the newspapers and such, but that hardly happened back then, except on the dedicated TV page. This began to change during the mid to late seventies, during the Baker era, as the media as a whole began to engage more with the public. However I always think of Jon Pertwee's era as the golden age of the show. It had a more serious tone, which was ironic really given that Jon Pertwee was, at heart, a comedian.

Can't really disagree with any of that. The UNIT years were a great time on the show. Some might say (myself included), the best.
With the new series they've tried with UNIT but it hasn't really worked I feel. I think it's because its very hard to put in new military figures, replacing the like of the Brig or Sergeant Benton, without doing a poor imitation of either of them -they were both so perfect in the roles. And the new ones lack charisma (although Captain Jack was great -was he UNIT-?) Captain Yates? -nah -always too wet for my liking & not a memorable cast member. Ian Marter would have been much better had he been cast in this role.
