The Ratings Thread (Part 56)
Quote:
According to my ever reliable computer clock(!), EastEnders' closing titles finished at 20:02:40, meaning that it will be tape-checked to 20:05.
Holby City therefore will be tape-checked from 20:05. EDIT - xeo, I think credits count? |

Also to note, we've just opened an Open Thread asking what DS readers think will top Christmas Day ratings.
Let us know your thoughts. |

New thread just in time for Christmas!
EastEnders will be tape-checked to 20:05 then, I always presumed credits didn't count for some reason! You learn something new every day

Might be an idea. I find it disappointing they don't seem to put as much effort into promoting the January one now, unless there's more to come with this promo campaign. Even the style of the short teasers they are running is the same as previous years. Enough to get me excited, but not a wider audience I feel. It needs freshening up, they can't afford to be complacent about it and just expect viewers to turn up en masse. It's their biggest show by a country mile and needs looking after.

I think Channel 5 are damaging Celebrity Big Brother in the long-term. It's rating well now but it's beginning to feel very tired I think in the same way I'm a Celebrity would if that was shown twice a year. I might give the January series a miss and stick to the summer series instead, we'll see how it goes.

Poor Carol! ![]() Ken It was fast paced just how EastEnders used to be. 8m+ is what it bloody deserves but I strongly feel that tomorrow will top 9m and should see it well for the rest of the festive season and beyond. I know this is not really an indication of ratings but Last night EastEnders didn't trend on twitter but tonight it's got two in the UK with one at Number 2 |

Would you be watching a documentary about Michael Jackson on Christmas Day if it wasn't on C5? Just seems an odd choice considering his reputation.
![]() But yes, it would get watched. Nothing was ever proven about Jackson. He was however an outstanding entertainer, and I think I will enjoy it. (I'm yet to see it) Not that I should have to explain myself to the DS Police, seeing red over my perfectly innocuous choice of viewing.

Just picking up something from TV Forum but BBC1 Scotland running a different schedule tonight with River City at 8pm (the norm I think), Holby City at 10pm, the news at 11pm and Not Going Out airing after midnight.
Re: Celeb BB - I believe this series will be the one where C5 surpass the number of days CBB aired on C4 over an entire decade - C4 had 134 days of CBB over 7 series, while this is the 6th outing on C5. |

It's not got an infinite lifespan though anyway, we know that, so it's a bit pointless at this stage to be looking to preserve. Better to make hay whilst the sun still shines. It's expensive just maintaining the house so to not get full use out of it would be a waste. |

No problem with two a year personally but I wouldn't be disappointed if the August one was scrapped. In January the TV landscape is not as brimming with activity as it perhaps should be and it stands out as more of an event, whereas in August even for fans it's more of an "after show" to what they consider the main event, the summer civilian series.

I'd like to echo comments about BBC One, Very Christmas all day our family and the kids (Grand kids) Have had it on all day but Holby looks so out of place.
It's should do okay but it doesn't look special enough. Great selection of Films though. Daytime is crucial at Christmas. Ken |

Ha, I came back just before Christmas, read through the last twenty pages and marked what I wanted to comment on, then the thread gets bloody closed! Like doing your shopping at the last minutes.
Anyway, it was mostly going to be pedantic stuff. To answer a few questions from the last part, 1991's Corrie at 2.50pm stopped halfway through for the Queen's speech, I remember watching it just to see how they did it. It was a scene in Alf Roberts' front room, and he said how he was going to go and sort something out but first he was going to watch The Queen, then he turned on the telly, it faded to black and the speech started, returning to Corrie afterwards. Very much like how in 1987-88 'stEnders went past midnight and they included Big Ben within it (though apparently it wasn't actually live, logistically it was a struggle so they went to Big Ben at midnight a few days earlier and recorded it then). As mentioned John Bishop (which was alright as a show, and I was pleased my mum liked David O'Doherty) was shown in Scotland at 10.30, which meant Bishop would have been on BBC1 and ITV at the same time there. Of course River City is on instead of Holby tonight so after ten the BBC Scotland schedule varies quite a lot, with Holby at ten, their own news bullletin at eleven and their own service, and Not Going Out at midnight! Impressive to see Mastermind and Question of Sport get virtually identical ratings. Baffled there was no tribute whatsoever to David Coleman, not a caption or even a reference by the announcer. Seemed bizarre. Wouldn't read too much in Mastermind ratings compared to The One Show, mind, because I was in front of the telly at seven o'clock last night, which isn't usually the case on a normal weekday. Someone else mentioned HIGNFY, they generally don't do a Christmas special as it happens. When it was on BBC2 the last episode of the year would be on the last Friday before Christmas even if it was Christmas Eve, as in 1993, but the only time they've ever done proper Christmas shows are in 1991 and 2008. Sometimes the compilation is shown over Christmas, sometimes it isn't. As for tomorrow, it's a quiet one for me this year because we're not going to my sister's, as we have done in recent years, because she's working (don't worry, everyone, we're going on Friday instead) so it'll just be a few of us at my parents' house, where I'm staying all week. That means I'll be watching Who live for the first time in a while, I'll also watch Strictly and we'll "have on" Pops and Toy Story probably. Don't know if my mum will watch Midwife and Downton live or record them for later. The rest of the time I'll probably read one of my presents. Oh, and Merry Christmas. |

It's should do okay but it doesn't look special enough. Pity BBC2 couldn't have taken up some of the slack with one of their Morecambe & Wise shows at the same time instead of a Victoria Wood special considered so poor it was ousted from a planned Christmas Day slot to Christmas Eve at the last moment. But maybe people won't remember that and give it a watch while waiting for Last Tango to come on. |

Xmas viewing wise, EastEnders is one I'll definitely be watching live. It's picked up so much and its quality is very good at the moment. Tonight's episode was excellent and I hope for more of the same tomorrow. I've got some recorded episodes of The Bill from Drama, a few classic races from Sky Sports F1 and Mrs. Brown's Boys, and that should be my Xmas viewing pretty much. BBC1 will probably be on by default all day tomorrow in the living room. Hope everyone has a great Xmas

It is a Christmas based episode with some.staff dressed in festive outfits.

But maybe people won't remember that and give it a watch while waiting for Last Tango to come on. ![]() I think we are being harsh on it to be honest. It's entirely possible it could get it's highest rating for ages and really boost the show for next year. That said my wife is watching it now and she hasn't watched holby for probably 5 years. How knows, my hunch is that Midsomer will beat LTIH and Holby, but Tango could timeshift back. Not Going out is an unknown quantity. It's Christmas and comedy usually does well at Christmas, NGO usually gets 3.5m timeshifting to about 4m so it's possible it could do well. It obviously not as good as last year but I have to say Daytime has been very good. Ken |

How Can I forget!
I'd Like to wish everyone on here a Very Merry Christmas. Hope it all goes well.
I've been picking up broken Ridge Tiles from my roof all day and trying a temporary fix so we don't get wet! Someone mentioned my shed yesterday, The shed is perfectly fine! Ken |

And for reference, here is the post by lewiep93 which provided historic Christmas Day soap ratings: http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showp...postcount=8157 That 2.50pm airing got just over 11m viewers, compared to 13m for the episode later in the evening. |
