I remember Michael Grade talking about when he took over BBC1. He said the channel had some good programmes but they were in the wrong places. He increased BBC1 ratings when he joined just by moving a few programmes around.
When I looked at BBC1's schedule for Christmas I did think they had enough there to do better than they did. Christmas Eve is a perfect example. A weak schedule produced weak ratings. |

Some extraordinary reaction here today.
All this wailing because an extraordinarily spectacular firework display, which takes huge amounts of planning and work, and is watched the whole world over, couldn't possibly deserve to be more watched than a load of Z list celebrities sitting around in their pants.

It's not as if the Fireworks were even that good though!
Its the same every year, blow up the London Eye with music. Hong Kong, Dubai and Sydney were world class. London looked a bit meh. Cannot believe an actual proper nightclub switched BBC1, thats just embarassing, dread to think what the clientele is like I did enjoy Graham Norton and the 'proposal' last night |

Last year The Voice launched at 6.2m up against Takeaway's 7.2m on Easter Saturday. The peak was way out in front of the average, suggesting that had Takeaway not dented it, it would probably have averaged c7m. This year there's no Takeaway, it isn't launching on Easter Saturday and is in fact launching in January. Based on that, given that launching on Easter weekend probably knocked a few hundred thousand off and the time of year is better, it really should be looking to launch at 7.5-8m given those factors. The last 3 audition shows that avoided major competition last year averaged 7.9-8.0m so that hardly seems unreasonable. That's before you even consider the effect of the new coaches, especially Kylie. I'd suggest it has a good chance of matching the 8.4m series 1 launched at, but Splash (which I can see dropping to around 4m, depending on how this weekend goes) will probably just hold it back from doing that, so on the whole I think it should be looking to launch around 8 million.

So it takes an organised firework display and the turn of the calendar to become the most watched programme of 2013. What does that say about the quality of original programming in the UK?
A couple of things. Had Barlow's concert been shown on BBC1 in the middle of summer it wouldn't have achieved such ratings. The BBC has managed to provide a yearly firework coverage on NYE which creates a very useful background visual for people celebrating and staying indoors/texting/calling loved ones. Some may say it's the BBC providing its best public service of the year. The ratings show that people were tuning in to have that on TV - which happened to allow Barlow his moment of ratings glory. |

Strong launch of programmes from BBC One there in the trailer. "EastEnders" is promoted this year, so Moore must want it at the forefront of her channel. There are some good series amongst the trail. I hope "The Voice" will be better during this run. "Doctor Who" also featuring, a shame we cant just have a new run in January.

This post-Fireworks slot is going to be like BBC1's version of the post Super Bowl slot...

Sherlock would never average 12m in overnights, as a final rating it could be possible. Butthe highest it has been so far is 10.66m in official ratings.

The great thing about BBC One is that they are guaranteed about 6 live one-off events per year which we already know before the year starts will most likely be in the Top 10-15 End of Year Most Watched charts...

Thursdays are going to be interesting, both ITV and BBC One have a good looking scheduled. I think ITV will just win that one. BBC One overall looks the stronger channel in primetime but ITV looks okay. I'm fascinated to see how Waterloo Road does on wednesday and how EastEnders does in it's usual slot's. |

To be perfectly honest I agree. around 8m or a high 7m. It's got a nice slot, it's got nice promotion and it's got a week of promotion away from christmas. The new Judges or whatever they are, and the fact it's january. It has to launch high. I'd be very disappointed and worried if it didn't.
I refuse to take seriously anybody saying 6m is a good figure if they criticised The X Factor for only getting high 8m figures on Saturday and 9m on a Sunday. January is a high rating month so The Voice should be doing well there. |

14.4 million for the fireworks, excellent, but is 3.3 pc a record low for ITV? Last night their bog standard schedule deserved to do badly against an excellent line up on BBC One, also well done to Gary Barlow.

Why wait that long? There are Burns night fireworks, st Patricks day fireworks, 4th of July, etc
Why not just open a 24 hour rolling fireworks channel too? Quote:

The Voice should be getting at least 8m, if it doesn't then it's a flop.
I refuse to take seriously anybody saying 6m is a good figure if they criticised The X Factor for only getting high 8m figures on Saturday and 9m on a Sunday. January is a high rating month so The Voice should be doing well there. What did X Factor get in it's series three? People judge X Factor by where it was in ratings for a number of years. The Voice has had a rollacoaster In the ratings due to playing cat and Mouse with BGT on scheduling. A January start is most logical it should do well there but any comparison with previous years is like comparing apples and oranges. New schedule, new presenters, two of four judges changed, different competition. If it gets 7 million for example that is not a flop. |

Happy 2014 to you all, EastEnders may get promoted a lot but people are using that as a cue to switch channel.
Also I think Sherlock will do well tonight as its the return of real programs. Harry Potter is a good film but I want something made for TV and not a movie I have on DVD. |
