Last year The Voice launched at 6.2m up against Takeaway's 7.2m on Easter Saturday. The peak was way out in front of the average, suggesting that had Takeaway not dented it, it would probably have averaged c7m. This year there's no Takeaway, it isn't launching on Easter Saturday and is in fact launching in January. Based on that, given that launching on Easter weekend probably knocked a few hundred thousand off and the time of year is better, it really should be looking to launch at 7.5-8m given those factors. The last 3 audition shows that avoided major competition last year averaged 7.9-8.0m so that hardly seems unreasonable. That's before you even consider the effect of the new coaches, especially Kylie. I'd suggest it has a good chance of matching the 8.4m series 1 launched at, but Splash (which I can see dropping to around 4m, depending on how this weekend goes) will probably just hold it back from doing that, so on the whole I think it should be looking to launch around 8 million.

I think you're being unfair regarding London's fireworks. Sydney infact were very similar with theirs. Same old monument being used same style soundtrack and so on. With Dubai, the most familiar skyscrapers were used, but in honesty, would you really be able to tell that Dubai's was more expensive than Londons?

I think you have it in your head that you dislike the London Fireworks for some reason only known to you, and regardless of how good they were, you decided that you didn't like before they were even lit.

A couple of things. Had Barlow's concert been shown on BBC1 in the middle of summer it wouldn't have achieved such ratings.

The BBC has managed to provide a yearly firework coverage on NYE which creates a very useful background visual for people celebrating and staying indoors/texting/calling loved ones.

Some may say it's the BBC providing its best public service of the year.

The ratings show that people were tuning in to have that on TV - which happened to allow Barlow his moment of ratings glory.

It's had more trailers in the past month than it's had in years, they've released another one today, 'Meet the Carters'. It's good to see the BBC finally putting some effort into its promotion, shame it hasn't made any difference to the ratings (yet.)

It doesn't seem odd at all that pubs and clubs show it on a big screen (or even a small screen). BBC1 have loud pop/dance music to the fireworks so it fits right into a club environment. I expect another 2 or 3million could be added to the TV overnight numbers via clubs/pubs. You don't have to be starring at the screen the entire time you can still wish happy new year to people.

And IAC wouldn't have had 13.05m in high summer either.

Nor, it should be said, if BBC1 hadn't decided to broadcast a worthy and boring history documentary about the British and the sea opposite it.

Maybe a little unfair to Barlow. Obviously the mega ratings came from people tuning in for the fireworks but they did not tune in half an hour early - his ratings must have been good throughout.

Surely on course for a series high with episode one tonight though when all is said and done.

As other have said the BBC still have time before the series 3 launch to build some interest and promotion seems to have gone into high gear today. Personally I'm more concerned (although that's not the right word) about Splash and Dancing on Ice which both launch this weekend and seem to have been completely lost in the Christmas/New Year shuffle.

To be perfectly honest I agree. around 8m or a high 7m. It's got a nice slot, it's got nice promotion and it's got a week of promotion away from christmas. The new Judges or whatever they are, and the fact it's january. It has to launch high. I'd be very disappointed and worried if it didn't.

Thursdays are going to be interesting, both ITV and BBC One have a good looking scheduled. I think ITV will just win that one.

BBC One overall looks the stronger channel in primetime but ITV looks okay. I'm fascinated to see how Waterloo Road does on wednesday and how EastEnders does in it's usual slot's.

I'm A Celebrity's freakishly high launch rating was achieved by the aid of some terrible scheduling on BBC1. We all know this.

The Voice should be getting at least 8m, if it doesn't then it's a flop.

I refuse to take seriously anybody saying 6m is a good figure if they criticised The X Factor for only getting high 8m figures on Saturday and 9m on a Sunday.

January is a high rating month so The Voice should be doing well there.

14.4 million for the fireworks, excellent, but is 3.3 pc a record low for ITV? Last night their bog standard schedule deserved to do badly against an excellent line up on BBC One, also well done to Gary Barlow.

Can you imagine the fireworks in here if they did.

What did X Factor get in it's series three?

People judge X Factor by where it was in ratings for a number of years.

The Voice has had a rollacoaster In the ratings due to playing cat and Mouse with BGT on scheduling.

A January start is most logical it should do well there but any comparison with previous years is like comparing apples and oranges.

New schedule, new presenters, two of four judges changed, different competition.

If it gets 7 million for example that is not a flop.

8 million for Sherlock tonight. My prediction.

Happy 2014 to you all, EastEnders may get promoted a lot but people are using that as a cue to switch channel.

Also I think Sherlock will do well tonight as its the return of real programs. Harry Potter is a good film but I want something made for TV and not a movie I have on DVD.

I went with 7.5m for EE and 8.9m for Sherlock in the RPG. I may be on the mark with Sherlock but I definitely underpredicted EE I think.
