I think you might be able to see the Dubai fireworks at 8pm our time on Sky News. They've been showing New Year fireworks from around the world live as the various nations reach midnight.

Thanks for the heads up. Having our first night in on NYE for as long as I can remember so might channel hop. Debating whether or not to watch Two Doors Down or whether its destined to be a dud

Mrs Brown's Boys doesn't pretend to be anything other than a daft comedy. That's why it's a smash hit in the ratings.

Yes I agree I enjoy watching it, the response was to it being extended to an hour.

I'm sure BBC1 are trying. There's the Michael McIntyre show, isn't there? Is there one for Lee Mack? No? And there's the gymnastics show.

Where they don't appear to be making an effort, and should, is in bringing back pre-watershed sitcom to the channel. All we had last year was Blandings. It seems that sitcoms originally designed for pre-watershed like Citizen Khan and Father Figure all ended up post-watershed. Plus Miranda was pre-watershed when she was on BBC2. (She's been repeated pre-watershed as has Outnumbered, another series that's always been on post-watershed in first runs.) Citizen Khan and Still Open All Hours both had pre-watershed slots over Christmas so hopefully that's an indication of Charlotte Moore's attitude to BBC1 sitcom.

Agree with the first half of the BBC2 resolution as well. Would like to see a little less stripped scheduling after 7pm.

BSI triumph again I see.

Utterly predictable that Shrek 4 was stupidly scheduled at 7.30 and would be trounced by Corrie and mean folk had no option but to default view Solace even if they all switched to BBC1 at 9. As someone said earlier, 7-8.30 would have been palatable and 6m would have watched CMM at 8.30 possibly boosting EE and MBB.

EE sunk because folk didn't expect it @ 9. Did bbc1 trail the 9pm EE? No, they didn't.

'Ratings Awards of the Year' 2013. Previous years:

- 2010 and 2011 - http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showp...postcount=2060
- 2012 - http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showp...postcount=2464

Hit of the year
- there is only one winner for me here. It has to be The Great British Bake Off. Will it grow further on BBC One? I'm not so sure how much further it can go, in all honesty.
- honourable mention to Broadchurch.
- previous winners: The Inbetweeners / Downton Abbey / Olympics 2012

Flop of the year
- it has to be ITV's comedy block. Wrong slot, it should have been left to build up outside of primetime like Mrs Brown's Boys, but instead slammed into the middle of primetime.
- honourable mention to That Puppet Game Show and Richard Hammond's Secret Service. Thankfully neither have been recommissioned.
- previous winners: The Prisoner / ITV1's Summer / various ITV shows

New hit of the year
- I mentioned it above: Broadchurch. A surprising hit too, but it did get lots of press before the series.
- Is Educating Yorkshire technically new? If so, then that, and Splash! deserve mentions.
- previous winners: Downton Abbey / Scott & Bailey / Call the Midwife

Jaw-dropping rating of the year
- for multiple reasons, and top of the tree barring anything untoward happening, I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!. Who expected series 13 to be their most watched series ever? I certainly didn't.
- I think Horizon: The Secret Life of Cats deserves a bloody good mention. Probably just as jaw-dropping as I'm a Celeb.
- previous winners: EastEnders Live: Aftermath / Big Fat Gypsy Weddings / Olympics 2012: Opening Ceremony

Mystifying rating of the year
- again, I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!, as discussed above. Both jaw-dropping and utterly confusing at the same time.
- previous winners: My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding / Olympics 2012: Closing Ceremony

"So glad that flopped" of the year
- this has to be various Channel 4 sex related shows. The last few months have not been too bad, but it is easy to forget the dire Summer that they had
- honourable mentions? I never watched it, but Hammond's show sounded god awful, so we should be happy there.
- previous winners: Torchwood: Miracle Day / Young Apprentice

"Such a shame that flopped" of the year
- can't think of anything, which means I haven't vested a major interest in anything which is disappearing. *phew*
- previous winners: Rock and Chips

Not an award, but I haven't seen many mentions of ITV's relaunch, which happened early this year. Probably a sign of how well executed it was.

I'm in Wales at the moment. BBC1W have just trailed the new drama series Hinterland starting 9.30 Saturday. This I think is the BBC/S4C production filmed in Welsh and again in English. We were told the English version would air on BBC4 in 2014. Well it seems the Welshies are getting it on the flagship channel. And BBC1 network ratings will be up the spout for weeks - starting with Nan...

Nan just can't catch a break, can she? She's delayed until 23:20 in the principality. This will take a 5% bite (roughly) out of her consolidated figure.

Which is why a slightly later BBC3 repeat at 10:50pm was up on usual.

Nope they promoted tonights 7:30pm episode. The episode that I expect will rate pretty low going by past new years eve showings,
70odd% of people in London are supposed to be on the riverbank getting a good view for the big event.

Anyone who placed a bet on Mrs Brown's Boys winning Christmas Day on Paddy Power, despite them saying they were basing it on the consolidated they appear to have already paid out.

Happy new year!

It's a four part series and that first episode is 95 minutes long. Episode 2 does not turn up the following Saturday. Unsurprisingly, as there's no room for it, unless BBC Wales wants to move Casualty (9.20pm) to goodness-knows-when and start MOTD at 11.15 at night.

Sherlock, The 7.39, Waterloo Road and Silent Witness all going out on BBC Wales at the same time as the rest of the UK.

Finding 90 minute slots is quiet tricky. Quirke is supposedly 3 x 90 minutes. Maybe the rest of Hinterland will be shown when the rest of the UK is showing that. And George Gently is 4 x 90 minutes. George Gently is supposed to be starting in February. Maybe it will get Thursdays at 8.30pm after Silent Witness finishes. And maybe Wales will show the rest of Hinterland then.

It seems like it could be a confusing 2014....

I thought "nek" was very funny!

However nek- sorry Ken- your posts are unmistakeable, so there isn't really any need to sign them

My Ratings Thread hope for 2014 is that EE recovers sufficiently to make it less of a target for certain posters. It may be wishful thinking though

Anyway best wishes for 2014 to everyone who posts on and looks at the biggest thread there is

Plus it tells you top left who's posted the post. So all posts are unmistakeable. (Just thought I point that out for anyone who hasn't noticed. I bet there'll be somebody.)

edit: Happy New Year, everybody.

My hope for 2014 is for BGT and XF to grow and grow.

Simon has a baby on the way and is soon to be married. It's not easy for working fathers and he'll need the extra income a successful XF would bring.

*cough*

...........we don't need them to grow too far or the Cowell ego will explode.

No doubt Samuel will be hoping that he takes a years paternity leave so he will not be showing up on XF 2014.
