Susanna Reid says the New Year Fireworks got 13.23m average. Why can't we at least assume that this excludes the Scottish audience? If they have said the words "and 1.29m Scots watched the celebrations from Edinburgh" which they have done, then why can't they be the actual results? Everyone on here seems swift to decide that Scottish viewers need stripping out etc yet it could actually be the opposite. Let's wait and see.

It will include viewers in Scotland because that's how BARB works but with time shift the final figure outside Scotland will certainly be close to 13.23 m (and the Scottish audience will increase a bit as well).

Never a great fan of Take That, but the songs are easy listening for many and I thought the whole thing worked really well considering it was live.

Massive share for BBC1, especially in Scotland. Neil posted the other day that last year's fireworks sent down a little in the officials (adding time shift and guests, stripping out Scotland).

Would be interested in how Only An Excuse did up here.

This is what Neil posted yesterday re last year's New Year Live.

So it lost 0.56m in stripping out Scotland.

Here's a comparison of overnights to officials from 2010 and how many were stripped out of the officials.
2010 - 10.25m - 9.37m = 0.88m
2011 - 10.92m - 10.67m = 0.25m
2012 - 10.30m - 9.74m = 0.56m

Initially they give a figure for the slot UK-wide; when later data is available they can break it down into regions. Scotland was the only region to opt-out of the network last night.BARB will have boxes in a representative number of Scottish homes.

So the Vodafone and Gary Barlow advert (featuring explosions and pretty colours) did astoundingly well then.

EastEnders was the top-rated soap on New Year's Eve, overnight figures show.

6.15m (29.3%) watched at 7.30pm on BBC One as Ronnie's feud with Carl led to a violent showdown. BBC Three's repeat screening secured 353k (2.0%) at 10.30pm.

Emmerdale attracted 5.7m (27.0%) at 7pm on ITV and 201k (1.0%) on +1 as Sam was put in the frame for the Home Farm fire.

Holby City interested 3.75m (18.5%) at 8pm on BBC One as the Guy and Zosia storyline continued.

Hollyoaks managed 837k (4.0%) at 6.25pm on Channel 4 as Ruby was rushed to hospital and Nancy exposed Frankie's fling, while E4's first look had 532k (2.5%) at 6.55pm and 131k (0.6%) on +1.


Um both soaps look low there. Bit of a drop for ED though considering it was over 7mil yestaday.

Shes right in a way, as I assume they have fireworks in Scotland too. They were all watching BBC1 at the same time (unlike +1 )

Ofcourse we have to remember too that this years show wasn't dragged out with too much meaningless standing around asking people what time they got there.

Well last night we had music channels on until 11.45 before going to the reliable BBC1 as usual. BBC1 stayed on until 12.35 but nobody was watching

Those soap ratings are appalling makes you wonder why they bothered. I suppose they will consolidate more than usual but dont really get where the audience went. They cant have all gone out by 7pm surely?

i suspect the average was higher than that 13.23 susanna reid suggests as it probably wont have been tape checked. of course when the barb officials come through they are tape checked to the nearest 1 minute, and on a very short program like this that will make a huge difference. with the peak being 14.7 i could see the tape checked being far higher than that 13.23m being suggested.

Its seem, judging by the ratings that everyone went out to celebrate NYE between 6.30pm-10pm before coming home to watch BBC1...

All this excitement over a few fireworks. Words like "deserved" being used. Why did it deserve to beat all the quality drama and entertainment programmes that have been broadcast through the year? Of course it blooming well didn't. What twaddle!

Nobody really said that. It deserved to get a big rating, not to top the year. Big events are always going to rate higher than regular TV programmes though for obvious reasons so I don't see the big deal

Wow, sensational rating for the New Year Fireworks . It's going to officially be the most watched show of the year, beating IAC, thank God IAC didn't come top. The reason is that it got a 13.7m overnight between 23:55-24:10 but it actually ran 23:57-24:12 which means that 13.7m overnight rating is actually an underestimation - its actual run time would've given it a higher overnight to around 13.9m. Take away the Scots but factor in the timeshift, it will consolidate to about 13.2m - more than I'm a Celebrity's 13.05m. FANTASTIC, as I predicted yesterday, IAC was under threat and New Year Live has done the job... set to officially be the most watched show of 2013 .

The Gary Barlow concert averaged more than any episode of XFactor in the overnights this year. So Gary finally was part of a 10million+ overnight program, though it was on the BBC .

The last time Barlow was part of a concert on New Years Eve, it was the 2007 Take That concert which only averaged 2.4m on Itv. He must be glad he switched to BBC to get an audience almost 5 times higher, much better exposure. Every year from now on, the BBC will be able to attract top musical acts due to the ratings power they have capable in that slot. It is a fantastic opportunity for artists to increase their exposure.

sorry to ask, but does that fireworks rating only include people watching bbc1 at home?

Also, do you know if the fireworks will be on iplayer, as Granny Fanny had an urgent call of nature just before 12.
