How do I turn off the map rotating feature on the google map app?
Its an annoying feature, because often when I try to zoom in/out with two fingers, I end up accidentally rotating the whole map, and then I have to tap the compass button to get it back to normal. Honestly I don't see the point in this feature at all, its simply a nuisance, is there a way at all to turn it off? because I can't find one, at least not in the 'settings'
![]() I just want my map with 'north' pointed upwards

I don't know about disabling the feature but there is an easy way to restore "north up". Once you have rotated the map (intentionally or unintentionally) then a little compass icon appears in the top right hand corner - tap this.
This whole "north up" thing is an interesting debate that has raged even before GPS, going back to paper maps. Personally I hate a map orientated in the direction of travel, but a lot of people like it - e.g. my wife always used to turn a paper map upside down in the car if we were travelling south, which totally confused me looking over her shoulder. I think the "big picture" is much easier to understand when it's displayed north up. A good example of a product I hate for this is Waze, which insists on constantly rotating the map, and so far I have not found a way to stop this behaviour. I know TomTom does a similar thing but it doesn't bother me the same way as it doesn't seem to be as dynamic as Waze. |
