Morrisons - Bad quality?
Hey,
so I've never shopped at Morrisons prior to 23 Dec, when I did my Xmas shopping. We decided to do it at Morrisons, as our bank is offering 20% cash back on purchases up to £100. I found the quality to be shocking. Like, actually shocking! Literally all of the fresh food we bought (with expectancy of at least 26th - most to 28th) is already bad. The carrots look viles, and the tomatoes - despite a display date of 28th are already mushy and just don't look great. A pack of mushrooms that has an expiry date of 27th already smell bad and have a weird watery substance around them (slightly thick!). The broccoli is also bad. None of the stuff we bought in Tesco has went bad, so it's 100% not our fridge now being cool enough or anything.. we also found their fruit and veg to be more expensive than other supermarkets... just wondering if Morrisons are known for bad quality? Or maybe they just stockpiled loads of fruit and veg for the period so that by the time it was sold, it was already close to expiry? |

To be honest that surprises me.
I am a firm fan of Morrisons and with the odd exception of a bruised apple or a dodgy satsuma once in a while, I do not have problems like you have typed about. I always buy the produce at the back with the best dates on it. I usually buy organic produce. I used to buy from an online organic company that delivered to your door, but I got sick of the fresh produce going off too quickly. Morrisons have a pretty good fresh organic fresh section at the store where I shop. |

Most fresh vegetables have a best by date and they should keep for some time after that date. It sounds more like you have not stored them correctly. Carrots can keep for weeks before they become unusable. Mushrooms would keep at least a week |

Can't say I've noticed much difference between fruit and veg bought at Morrisons to either Asda or Tesco.
Maybe the store has a poor produce manager ? |

I only buy meat from Morrisons because I found the quality to be second to none.

I'm not very keen on morrisons. I don't like the fact that they are forever making errors in their prices,on shelf fronts. You get to till having checked and double checked that you read it right and then it's double the price. They always says that it's customers who move stuff around but that's a load of bull because I've found whole sections with the wrong price on and customers wouldn't do that.
I don't think their fruit and veg is as good as lidls either. |

Morrisons here is better than other shops for veg and meat, but like many shops at Christmas the quality control goes a bit out of the window. Sainsburys had crates of veg outside over night from 20th onwards and the frosts was not kind to the potatoes and I doubt some of the leafy veg would have done well either. Tescos did the same I am told but Morrisons had theirs in a big tent outside which may have protected them somewhat.
It's sort of our fault for expecting them to get stocks on so close to the day they just don't have room in doors to store it all. |

I generally find Morrisons produce - both in selection and quality - to be pretty good.

I can't recall having any quality problems with Morrisons.
I think it may have just been a bad period or as someone said, a bad store/manager. |

It think it varies quite a bit from store to store. The (new) Morrisons nearest us is very good, but i have been in some before that haven't been that great.
The Asda near us is the worst! Yuck. |

They were stored the same way I've stored all fruit/veg over the last 4 years (since moving out of home!) and I've never had an issue like this before, Bill_James.
I guess if everyone else has had good experiences, then it must just be down to selling old stock as "new" with a prolonged expiry date for the Christmas period? Either way, something was weird with them. This was the St. Albans store by the way! |

We brought all of our fruit & veg @ Waitrose on Christmas Eve and it was all perfect on Christmas Day.
![]() Seriously, though, we shop at Morrison's most weeks as it's out nearest supermarket and we have never had a problem with their fruit & veg. |

I find the quality of Morrisons fruit and veg is usually really good, much better than the Asda near us.
Fish is good too but I find the meat is often going off the day before the best before date especially beef. I don't have that problem with meat from the butcher or other supermarkets. |

I eat lots of plain chicken drumsticks and have tried them from everywhere and find Morrisons to have one of the best, better than M&S even. I only go to Morrisons every now and then as the nearest one is a few miles away but never had a problem.

Going to a store you have never shopped at 2 days before xmas isn't i think a good thing when people have been buy, buy, buying!, you would be best to try it at a quieter time when there hasn't been all this mass buying and see how it compares then!, Morrisons is a wonderful shop with so much lovely stuff over all the departments!.....

My hubby takes his mother shopping in Morrisons but will not buy fruit or veg from there now. Firstly he says it is more expensive than from anywhere else and he took back the last apples and potatoes he bought as they were rotten. Both in packs and you could not see all of the produce in there.

Morrisons is our nearest supermarket, so we're regularly in there for the week's bits and bobs. We don't buy fresh veg, but I've always been very impressed with their fresh fruit and bakery. Never had any real complaint with anything I've bought there TBH.

That is simply not true. Morrisons have very good offers on a lot of fruit and veg, far more than other supermarkets.
Which other supermarkets do you shop in to compare - my oh goes in Morrisons, Aldi and Asda on a regular basis and compares them all the time as he does our shopping. Don't buy meat so lots of our shopping is based on vegetables hence the regular checks on veg prices. |

In general, in the 36 years or so that I have been shopping at Morrisons on a regular basis I have never had any problems with their goods across any of their ranges. I also find their own brand products, and in particular their "Savers" brand, to be as good as some of the premium/branded ranges. |

I don't go to Morrisons regularly but have never had any problem with their stuff when I have been. They do some cheese and onion breadcakes which are absolutely lovely so I sometimes go for those.
Morrisons was the only place I found a meat and potato pie (husband's favourite) when we lived down south! They might have had them in Asda but I wasn't prepared to go to Dagenham or Tilbury for a pie. |

Morrisons is my Supermarket of the Year. It is one of the few places left that feels like Normal Britain. The staff are friendly and down to earth, the look of the stores is bright and cheerful, there is music - and at just the right level - which alleviates stress, the prices are good, the bread is excellent, they know where their meat is coming from and the fruit and veg section is better than anywhere. While it is busy, it is almost a life-enhancing joy to be there.
Tesco have cut back on product range in smaller stores this year. They were the best for cut flowers but that's been ruined and the same is true of many other departments. Their ready meals are among the best but there is still caution because of that horse meat scandal. Much of the fruit and veg is unnecessarily expensive. On the plus side, the staff are ok and the customer complaints service is very good. Why on earth Sainsburys are now popular I cannot say. I find the place very American, not particularly cheap, and the staff can seem lazy and very miserable. Marks and Spencer are still the best for food - particularly fish and meat products - but some things get better and some things get worse. There is a worrying sense at times that they are sleepwalking. Waitrose are a clear second but sometimes the food doesn't live up to their reputation. However, the nature of their organisation beats the standard Corporates by miles on ethical grounds. The Co-op is dear. I have no knowledge of Asda, Lidl and Aldi. |

I sometimes shop in Morrisons and have not noticed anything bad about their quality.
ASDA on the other hand I have had a problem with. I've seen the odd nasty surprise in Sainsburys among the vegetables over the years and rejected them. |
