As Jason Hardy has just played the top 40 songs of the 70s, I thought I would list them here. I noticed a few oddities in his announcements. For example, he would time no 1s according to month of release rather than month they topped the chart. For example, he claimed the New Seekers to have been no 1 in Nov 73 instead of Jan 74. He also claimed The Floral Dance to have been no 1, when really it only made no 2. He did not name the no 11 song but I think I know what it was.

I have marked # by the songs he didn't play (hash as in hash-up of the timings as it was only a 2-hour show ). I have chosen my own top 10 within the list, and marked ~ by these but a * for my own no 1 from this top 40.

Anyway, the list is as below.

# 40 George Harrison:- My Sweet Lord
39 Bee Gees:- How Deep is Your Love?
38 Dr Hook:- When You’re in Love With a Beautiful Woman
37 Gloria Gaynor:- I Will Survive
36 Leo Sayer:- When I Need You
# 35 Peters & Lee:- Welcome Home
~ 34 Elton John/ Kiki Dee:- Don’t Go Breaking My Heart
33 Nilsson:- Without You
# 32 Father Abraham & the Smurfs:- The Smurf Song
#~ 31 Tubeway Army:- Are Friends Electric?

# 30 Johnny Mathis:- When a Child is Born
~ 29 Abba:- Dancing Queen
# 28 Boomtown Rats:- I Don’t Like Mondays
27 New Seekers:- You Won’t Find Another Fool Like Me
26 Brighouse & Rastrick Brass Band:- The Floral Dance
25 Cliff Richard:- We Don’t Talk Anymore
24 Commodores:- Three Times a Lady
23 Pussycat:- Mississippi
22 Rod Stewart:- Sailing
# 21 Royal Scots Dragoon Guards:- Amazing Grace

~ 20 Ian Dury & the Blockheads:- Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick
19 Showaddywaddy:- Under the Moon of Love
~ 18 Dawn:- Tie a Yellow Ribbon
17 New Seekers:- I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing
16 Julie Covington:- Don’t Cry for Me Argentina
# 15 Little Jimmy Osmond:- Long-Haired Lover from Liverpool
14 Simon Park Orchestra:- Eye Level
#~ 13 Slade:- Merry Christmas Everybody
~ 12 Brotherhood of Man:- Save Your Kisses for Me

* 8 Blondie:- Heart of Glass
# 7 Queen:- Bohemian Rhapsody
6 Village People:- YMCA
#~ 5 John Travolta/ Olivia Newton-John:- Summer Nights

I like so many of these songs.

How was this compiled? Was it sales based or a public vote maybe? Either way I wish I'd heard it.

I think it was sales, slighly updated to include remixes eg Heart of Glass overtook Bright Eyes. It was on BBC Radio Manchester from 12 til 2 today so may well be available soon via their website on I-player.

Thanks, I'll try in a couple of days. I'm a permanent big fan of 70's music anyway, it's my favourite music, but for some reason I'm particularly into listening to 70's music of all types at the moment. I can't get "Leader Of The Pack" and "Blockbuster" out of my head today along with Donna Summer's "Down Deep Inside".

There were so many great songs in the 70's, but unfortunately most of them are not in that list.

Two Boney M songs in the top four is hilarious, and just shows lack of taste is there for all generations.

agreed...

i presume this was based on sales?..

nothing annoys me more then crediting a track being at #1 wrongly.

prime example is my fav, 'keep on running' spencer daivis group. it was released and entered the charts in december 65, but was the first #1 of 1966, so when its referred to as "a #1 from 1965" it really pisses my off... NO IT WASNT!.

Interestingly, there is nothing from 1970 or '71. New Seekers may have snuck in at the end of 1971 but wasn't really a hit until '72.

This is nothing more than purely a sales list. Certainly no chance of it being a public vote, as Gary Glitter would hardly be getting voted in at No11 nowadays would he! It's sales. These kind of lists are getting rather tedious on radio programmes aren't they?

It was obviously based on sales so it was the British buying public. The biggest hit on your list is Free's "All right Now" which was a no.2 so it was doubtful that any of the tracks you listed would have been in there. Pick any decade and the results would be the same. The British public in general have always had and always probably will have truly awful taste in music.

Just a little disappointed that T.Rex didn't make the top 40.
I always thought 'Hot Love' was one of the biggest hits of the early 70s.
Or Chicory Tip's 'Son of My Father' or Steve Harley's 'Make Me Smile' but not as big as I thought. Pity.

Of course the songs that go on to have a lasting influence and audience, don't always sell the most initially.

'brown eyed girl' didnt chart, 'ace of spades' only reached #18 or summut... but they are tracks we all know and have influence way outside what their commercial success would have us believe.

If it's based on sales where is Baccara - Yes Sir, I Can Boogie? as it's in the top 10 singles sellers of all time (7th and the only 1970's track) and was the top selling single in the 1970's

With Never Ending Song of Love which isn't in the list. I'd like to Teach the World to Sing entered the charts in mid December and didn't get to number one until January 1972.

Really? Is that worldwide sales or UK sales only (as the chart in this thread is)?

I'm pretty sure the Top 10 all time sellers list of the UK charts features a few 70s tracks like a couple of Grease songs, a couple of Boney M songs, Mull Of Kintyre and Bohemian Rhapsody (70s & 1991 sales combined) in fact 6 of the top 7 of the 70s Top 10 is in there, I'm sure.
