My old AVR has given up the ghost (right in the middle of Skyfall).

I'm looking to replace with a Denon X2000 (maybe) and keep my current Bose Subwoofer and speakers. Currently I get my sound from an optical cable but the Denon doesn't seem to have optical input.

So my question is this. If I HDMI from my Sky box, and Blu Ray direct to the new AVR and then HDMI from the AVR to the TV, will I lose any picture quality going through the AVR?

I might be missing something here but the tv and AVR will have to have ARC on both pieces of equipment to work without optical, if not you wont get any sound.

Oh - I'd better check that then. Thanks.

I think I'm OK on the ARC front. All the AVR inputs on the Denon have ARC, the Blu Ray I'm thinking of getting has ARC. My sky box doesn't - but there is one optical input on the Denon apparently.

And since the sound will be coming from the AV it won't matter if the TV has arc or not will it?

The Denon X2000 has 2x Optical inputs.....

I'd connect as follows.......

Sky/Bluray HDMI > Denon HDMI

Denon HDMI > TV HDMI

Don't forget to change the sound settings on the Sky box to enable Dolby Digital over HDMI.

None of the INPUTs on the Denon will have ARC. Equally none of your sources, including the Blu Ray have ARC either.

ARC is Audio Return Channel. It exists only on TVs and the HDMI Output of the receiver. It's purpose is to allow audio to be fed back down the HDMI cable from the TV to receiver whilst pictures flow in the opposite direction.

The source devices, disk play, Sky box etc, don't need it because they use the normal audio channel embedded in the video carried over HDMI anyway.

If the TV does not have ARC then you will need some other form of audio connection if you use it's built in tuner to watch Freeview channels. If however you don't use Freeview then it doesn't matter if you have ARC or not.

Even better - thank you.

My original question was will I lose picture quality by connecting through the AV, rather than direct to the TV. Presumably you'd say not.. ?

Thankyou for the explanation.

I was jusy going by the technical spec which says of the inputs:

7 (including 1 front) x HDMI inputs with 3D, CEC and ARC support, and 1 x HDMI output

There is no loss of pq, all the amp does is pass the video signal through to the TV.

You would think a manufacturer of Denon's quality would know better!

But at least they get it right in the manual.
