Photo Sharing
Magic Cottage
27-12-2013
I have about 5000 photos in Picasa on my desktop which I have tagged etc for easy reference. With the increasing move to tablets and smart phones, I would like to make these available for other members of the family to view on their devices [all Android].

I thought this would be easy enough by just sharing them on Google+ but on uploading a few an obvious flaw has already shown up. The all important tags are not there. So, if the other viewers want to see the pics I've taken of whatever cathedral they appear to have to wade through the 5000+ photos to find them.

There must be an easier way? I don't have the time to retag them all in Google+ or whatever.

Not exactly what you're asking, I appreciate, but Google+'s photo search is very powerful indeed. For instance, searching for "cathedral" will pick out all of your photos of cathedrals with a pretty impressive success rate. I'm pretty sure "Coventry cathedral" (or whatever) would be nearly as accurate too.

Obviously if you've tagged them as "Fred and Ginger's Wedding Buffet" then this is of no use, unfortunately. Out of interest, do the tags remain if you upload them to Picasa instead of Google+? (For the moment, they're pretty interchangeable).

No, they are not there in Picasa either. As you quite rightly say, if searching for a more general tag such as cathedral, then all seems reasonable, but if searching for Aunt Flo it doesn't work, which is not what I'm after.

Have you tried this?

Thanks for that. I'll do that when I'm back on my desktop.

Sorry Roush, couldn't get back to PC yesterday. Have tried the suggestions in the link you gave me with about 250 photos this morning and it seems to work perfectly. Many thanks.

I sometimes amaze myself that I ignore the obvious!

I have a similar problem in that I have uploaded some 5k pictures to BOX and lost all the tags, so where is best for free online storage which preserves the tags?

You can upload to cloud with the likes of skydrive and share with who you like, just add their email and they access your pictures.

flickr is worth a look. 1 TB of storage free. pretty sure it preserves keywords/tags.

Totally correct. 1 TB free storage, preservation of tags. Excellent. Problem solved! Noooooooo! Downloaded the Android app to assess usefulness for this project and there the story stops. The Android app is possibly the worst app I've seen for a time. But it's biggest deal breaker for me is that there is no way to search your own photos either by tag or any method. Therefore for this project and this thread Flickr is not an option.

It's also worth noting that the tags in Picasa are saved, as far as I know, in a database rather than in the photo file themselves. Therefore unless Picasa's Flickr export amalgamates the tags with the file before uploading, I don't necessarily see that would be an option regardless of how good (or otherwise) the Android app is.
