Spot on PJ1893. There's usually one act on those lists, like a Adele or a Ellie Goulding that will go on to much greater things but, generally, I find those lists to be sh*te. They just reflect that the people picking the acts are toffie nosed Guardian reading middle class people who revel in putting together lists of obscurities and borderline bland M.O.R.
Who will actually go on to do great things across the year will probably be someone the music establishment hasn't heard of or didn't want to endorse because they didn't fit their Guardian readers remit. |

I thought 2013 was great personally, at least in comparison to the few years before it. I think 2014 will be another great year, but those who are fans of the pop girls probably won't like it. Pure dance-pop music is struggling in the industry right now. Pitbull - Timber and Avicii - Hey Brother are the only pure pop songs big right now. I guess using folk/country influences in songs will be the best way to go... Quote:

But realistically, they can't have too many artists on those lists, since they're not seen as "credible" by the older generations. They just want a white guy with a guitar singing rock or adult contemporary. |

Yes, because the only people who are going to release anything are on a list produced by the BBC and MTV.
Jesus wept, look elsewhere then, or look at some of the existing bands you like because I,m sure at least one of them will be releasing something next year! |

Yes, if you judge your music by MTV or BBC; but if you think outside the box and look elsewhere, you will see some really great music.
Get out to your local bars and clubs and support local bands/artists instead of bitching about what other people say you should listen to. |

With Nadezha and Maria out of prison I was hoping for a new album from Pussy Riot but probably too political for DS listeners?*

London Grammar didn't come into prominence until mid 2013 really and they have been one of the most successful new UK acts!
My advice would be to avoid these 'hype lists' and focus on these acts in the new year (new and old): Angel Olsen St Vincent MØ Kyla La Grange Wardell Lykke Li ArthurBeatrice Marika Hackman Metronomy Jessica Pratt Warpaint Kelela |

It's a noble idea and there is a vast amount of underground and alternative music around much of which even the connoisseurs on DS know little about. However, pop music only has meaning if it reaches and is listened to by a critical mass of people. Otherwise how do you judge it?
The OP said music, not pop music anyway! |

How about judging things on your own standards without having to hear what other people think before you make up your mind.

Music is a personal thing. I judge it by my own standards and by the amount of enjoyment I get from it.
You will never be able to hear all the music produced in a year or any other time span for that matter. It has to be filtered by the production process, the accessibility of the product/service, the recommendations of others and indeed your own self filtering/prejudices/taste whatever you want to call them. We don't exist in a universe of pure individual choice, music is always mediated in some way, |

When you consider how much great music has been written over the best part of the last hundred years and is still available, I can't understand why anyone might be concerned about what might be coming in 2014.
I'll guarantee this much, whatever it is, most of it will be forgettable. |

I think I would rather trust my own interests and judgement over that of a corporate record label executive whose only interest is making money. If I relied on the opinions of those in the business or on radio then I would never hear the music I do.
Of course you get influences from many people and the media but ultimately it is music I enjoy that I buy. I certainly wouldn't look towards a list chosen by "taste makers" as any recommendation or guide as they are invariably totally unaware the genres I like even exist. For me 2013 was another cracking year for music and I'm already looking forward to 2014. |

And why wouldn't execs or music writers who hear far more music than any of us know a little about what's good? Quote:

Your taste might be rubbish, I don't know. I've only your word for it.

But every year is just about the music WE enjoy, the ops original statement will have been based on the music that THEY enjoy. If you didn't enjoy music this year does not mean I can't enjoy music this year
However, if it's just about will I enjoy music in 2014 as much or as little as I have enjoyed it in 2013, well who knows? Dull question really.

Like others, I prefer to simply enjoy and rate music on my own terms rather than concerning myself with what other people think. I don't think you need to turn music into an intellectual exercise all the time. It's not really the way to enjoy it imo. |
