Was thinking of getting the kindle hdx. I was wondering is it worth getting it now or just wait a couple of months till something better comes along?

As with all tech items something better will always be coming soon. If you need a tablet now, then get one and enjoy it

I agree with Tony. If you want one now, get one now. Wait six months and maybe something better will be out, but then wait six months after that and then maybe something better than that will be out, and so on and so on...

Also if it is the kindle fire you are particularly interested in, it won't be getting refreshed until at least September next year going on release history.

Also the kindle fire (7 inch) on sale until early January, so I'd get one now before prices go up.

If you're not desperate, its probably worth waiting to see what CES brings...

Whatever you buy, it will soon be "old tech".

If you are looking for value for money combined with quality, the ASUS HD7 takes some beating, being built by one of the best hardware manufactures in the world, and available for not a lot of money over a 100 quid.

The release of the ASUS HD7 was somewhat overshadowed by the new Nexus (also made by ASUS for google), mainly because of the higher res screen in the Nexus. But other than that, the spec is similar.

Recommend you go into Currys and see the two alongside each other, and compare the screens. Currys had a discount on all tablets in November, and maybe they will run it again in the New Year. You may also be able to get a 3 year warranty at half the usual price for 15 to 20 quid - you need to ask for a manager's special, and haggle a bit.

Santa got me a Kindle Fire. I think you overstate your case against a walled garden.

I can stream from a Linux DLNA server, I have VLC so formats and codecs aren't an issue.

I've got YouTube playing music video now because it hadn't even occurred to me it wouldn't work.

The Asus HD7 is pretty good; I was configured one for my ex's daughter prior to christmas. Interesting comparison against the Hudl I was configuring for my son.

However the HD7 is more of competitor for the original N7, not the 2013 variant.

On performance and screen quality, the Hudl is way ahead of the Asus. However the Asus cameras (both front and back) are actually usable, whereas the cameras in the Hudl ... aren't. Tried Angry Birds Go characters on the Hudl - won't work. They however work fine on the Asus HD7.

The other one that is worth considering for the same price is the Advent Vega Tegra Note 7. Ignoring the silly name, it is by far and away the fastest sub £300 tablet. And at least on some benchmarks it is actually the fastest on the market. And it is currently around £130.

I am aware of the Nexus 7/2, as I have one. I posted a comparison chart between Nexus 7 1 & 2 on another thread.

There is an appraisal of the Advent here...

If that's the right one, I can't see that it stands out from the ASUS HD7.

Some of the generic Chinese tablets come with high specs at low cost, the big question is: how long will they last?

ASUS are highly rated by people in the computer world, and their laptops come out tops on insurance stats.

I bought my Nexus 7/2 32gb from John Lewis with a 2 year warranty, but if it hadn't been for the high-res screen, I would have gone for the ASUS HD7 at Currys and taken out a 3 year warranty, which should come out at just under 150 pounds with a bit of haggling over the cost of the extended warranty.

If you're in the market for an 8" tablet, Amazon have just dropped the price on this Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0. Was £179.99 just before Xmas, and was considering getting one then. Glad I waited a few more days to snap this up, which I just have at £149.99 (16gb sd card thrown in).

The specs may not be top of the range, but think this is perfectly adequate for evening lounge surfing and easier on the eyes, than the 7" Nexus 7 (too small for me).

A significant disadvantage is that you'll be pretty much locked into all things Amazon. Therefore, I'd suggest considering other Android tablets from Google (Nexus), Samsung (Galaxy Tab) and Tesco (Hudl) as well that offer more instant flexibility and you can always then install the Kindle app on these other tablets.

There's so much choice now and decent tabs can be had at good prices. I think, 2014 will be the year of the tablet. You see more and more people with them when your out and about.

I LOVE my Kindle Fire HD. Saw several reviewers who prefer it to their iPad, and I can't disagree with them, even after shelling out the bucks for an iPad Air.

It's so good that I wouldn't recommend anyone wait for something better to come along. Get it now.

that's the conclusion I have come to and was going to purchase it.

Was wondering if something better came along, would I have wasted money?

The tablet is only for personal use and browsing, reading, watching telly. Mainly leisure use.

A cheap Android tablet I have copes with that easy enough. You need the speed if you start gaming a lot. I bought a Hudl for my six year old grandson (he loves it), got one for myself and must say its really good. Good battery life, not walled, installed the Kindle app for books.

For what you say you need a tablet for I'd suggest you go out now and treat yourself. On a personal level although I've not got a Kindle HD I don't like the idea of it being limited.

Nope, because it'll still be serving you well. I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab bought at the end of 2012 and it's still serving me very well for internet browsing, watching movies & TV, reading ebooks, listening to audiobooks, etc. despite the fact that it's been superceded by a newer model. These days, all technology is out of date nine months later so you might as well buy the tablet of your choice right now and start enjoying it!

It stands well above the HD7 - roughly 3 times the performance, apparently the stylus is also very good.

Basically, if you want an Android gaming tablet, the Tegra Note 7 is THE android tablet to go for. It comprehensively runs rings around the 2013 N7 on performance, makes the HD7 look really poor ...

Other variants of it have just had 4.3 released, so no doubt it'll be imminent for the Advent.

Not what the review says on the link I've posted above.

I thought the ASUS MEMO HD 7 was basically a nexus 7 2012 with a rear camera and an SD card slot.
