On reflection....

What have been your music highs and lows?

What are you hopes for 2014?

Disclosure. Amazing album, and I've seen them live four times in the space of about 8 months, brilliant every time. Their album is full of amazing tracks, it's my album of the year.

Other albums I've enjoyed greatly: Demi Lovato, Charli XCX, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Stooshe, Ellie Goulding, Beyoncé.

I went to Bestival and the best acts of the weekend were Disclosure, Knife Party, Sam Smith and Cyril Hahn.

My top 10 songs are (from top to bottom): La La La, Wrecking Ball, I Love It, I Could Be The One (Avicii), Waiting All Night (Rudimental), You & Me (Disclosure), Made in the USA (Demi Lovato), Roar, Perfect Form (Cyril Hahn) and The Monster (Eminem & Rihanna).

Lows:

Disappointing albums from: Lady Gaga (absolute shit), Lucy Spraggan, Jessie J, Naughty Boy, Union J.

Worst song of the year: What does the fox say

In terms of live acts, I've not been to many gigs at all, but I thought Rudimental were bad when I saw them.

Getting to see Black Sabbath in Belfast.
Discovering Bandcamp and all the great independent music on there.
The return of Tom Keifer and his solo album.

I could go on but I will leave it there. I can't think of any lows because 2013 has been a great year for music. At least, it has for me.

My high of the year was the Kate Nash album, Girl Talk and seeing her live. I had heard of her before of course but never paid much attention to her music. But I just loved the 90's Riot Grrl sound of it and she's such a brilliant outspoken role model for women with really unique style. Also, it was great to see the original Riot Grrl Kathleen Hanna back after a battle with Lyme Disease with her new band Julie Ruin. I also loved seeing the Sleigh bells live.

My low or disapointment of the year was the new Goldfrapp album. I know it was critically well received but I found it really dull, slow and samey. I was really looking forward to it for so long but it was very underwhelming for me.

My hopes for the new year are the new albums from Suzanne Vega and Tori Amos, two artists who have been away for awhile but whom I always loved. I hope to see them both live in the coming year. I also hope to find a new artist or an artist I've never paid attention to before whom I really love like I found Kate Nash this year.

As a pop fan this year has been slightly disappointing but still a good few highs for me personally.

Highs - The Saturdays getting to #1, Rudimentals Home, Disclosure Settle, Le Youth Cool, Britney's comeback, Justin Timberlakes comeback, John Newman Love Me Again, Miley We Can't Stop, Calvin Harris Thinking About You. JLS split finally, Melanie C getting her 1st top 40 hit in years

Lows - The Saturdays Living For The Weekend, The Wanted Word Of Mouth, One Direction in general, Girls Aloud Calling It A Day, Katy Perry Roar and One Republic constantly getting overplayed, The return of Lady Gaga....my most underwhelming moment of the year by a mile.

Lows

Lady Gaga - Artpop (it really is an over hyped piece of shite)

Fifth Harmony (I really thought 2013 was gonna be their year, sadly their label is messing them up big time)

Britney and Justins comebacks (both were as mediocre as each others)

Highs

Katy Perry - Legendary Lovers (best song of her new album, definitely a music high)

Bastille (changing the sound of pop music and giving a fantastic album)

Highs:
- Beyonce's surprise album release after months of agonised waiting... but it was worth it when it came.
- Bastille's debut.
- Ellie Goulding's continued success.
- Little Mix's second album.
- 'We Can't Stop', 'Wrecking Ball' and 'Adore You' by Miley.
- New album from Kelly Rowland - 'Talk a Good Game'
- Discovering K Michelle, MŘ, Dondria and countless other artists through Last.fm

Lows:
- Jessie J and Lady GaGa in general still lurking around and releasing crap music.
- Rebecca Ferguson's second album.. admittedly I only listened to it once and haven't given it a chance to grow on me but at the moment it remains a disappointing release for me.
- Azealia Banks flopping and having her album delayed again and again.

That's all I can think of right now.. I just realised how much has happened this year in music.

Disclosure's debut album, absolutely brilliant, like pretty much all the songs on there and I feel like 2014 will be another strong year for the lads.
Katy B's return - 5AM, I Like You and What Love is Made Of are all good tracks and I'm really excited for Little Red to be released
Bastille and The 1975, discovered these two bands this year and I love their respective debut albums.
Arctic Monkey's 'AM' release.
Seeing McFly and Lewis Watson live - McFly interact really well with the crowds and sounded amazing, as did Lewis who met everyone at the concert and he is a really humble, sweet lad

Lows:
Justin Timberlake's return, I was very underwhelmed by his two releases which were so disappointing as I'm a big fan of his
Robin Thicke's 'Blurred Lines' album - it's very poor compared to his previous releases.
Jessie J's 'Wild'.
Radio overplaying 'Get Lucky' and 'Counting Stars' which made me go off those songs

I agree with the good news you have highlighted. However, Roar was the first Katy Perry single I have really liked, and Counting Stars so grew on me just before Christmas that it is potentially my fave Christmas hit since 2000!

There came the point in August when Get Lucky had been overplayed, but thankfully radio then eased off it. It does therefore now sound good again.
