Dog ID Tags - What's Your Opinion?

I thought I'd seen a thread on this subject a while ago, and now I can't find it - apologies for starting a new one.

What's your opinion on whether it's wise to include a dog's name on it's ID tag?

Thank you

Personally, I was taught to never put a dogs name on its ID tag. The reason being that if someone stole your dog, it would be difficult for them to get it to do anything for them and would be less convincing to pass off as theirs if it didn't respond to the name they were calling it. You wouldn't stamp your PIN on yourself so people could steal your bank balance easily, so why make it easy for a dog thief by conveniently stamping your dog's name on him plain for for anyone to see? All I put on a tag is my phone number on one side and the vets number on the other, that along with another tag they have that says 'I'm microchipped - scan me' I feel is enough. If someone finds your dog, they don't need to know its name to take it to the vets to be scanned now do they?

All of that's true and it's what I was always taught as well. It just seems to be a "fashion" these days that people put their dog's name on the tag. I was just curious to see what others think. I'm getting new tags for my dog and most of them are shown with the dog's name on.

Mine both have their names on them, never really thought about not doing it.

Completely agree with colliewobbles. My dog has a tag with our surname, address, phone number and on the other side there's "I'm microchipped". I'd never put my dogs name on the tag.

Never occurred to me to put their name on them, anyone who needs to know their names already does and anyone rescuing them only needs my name and contact.

Don't want anyone else to be able to call them as they are both very trusting and would go off with people if they could.

That's because it's easier for the seller to put 'Fido' 'Lucky' or 'Rex' than to think up a phone number that hopefully belongs to nobody, on the display tags. Specifically request that you don't want your dog's name on the tag, if they refuse go somewhere else. The legal requirement is a ID tag, mentions nothing about the dog's name having to be on it.

I remember someone ringing years ago asking to speak to Mrs Jerry, errr no Mrs Jerry here, sorry. Sat there for a few mins thinking odd, what a coincidence with the dog being called jerry, it then dawned on me!! I raced into the back garden looking for the dog who obviously wasnt there!! Thank goodness for 1471.

My dogs just have a mobile number on their tags. Having said that though, I need to get a new one as one was lost on their walk the other night.

There is a legal requirement for what needs to be on a dog tag:

We do have our dogs name on ours but after reading the other posts I think I'll get a new one without her name on it.

We have surname, first line of address and post code and home telephone number.

When we had cats we just put our surname as back then you couldnt fit their name and surname on and we thought people would feel more comfortable if they had to ring us and ask for mrs smith than tinkerbells owner. So just did same with the dogs tag.

Surname, address and telephone number. No name ... why would you need to?
