So are we about to migrate to a new thread again then? IIRC the last ratings thread was closed after 400 pages had been completed.

![]() Good ratings for ITV last night good for Champions League. Anyone noted this? "Dale Winton has signed a two year, four series deal increasing still further his key role as one of the main hosts of the National Lottery, the BBC announced today. The deal will see Dale hosting two more series of In It To Win It , plus two further lottery series, as yet to be named." I wonder what the series' will be? Also, BBC have confirmed full details for their Formula One coverage next year, full press pack is here. Here comes The Chain!

Also from March 13th ITV are making News at Ten five days a week.
They had no option really because PD wasn't doing very well and without the friday bulletin, News at Ten just feels like a half arsed attempt by ITV. |

Bit of a scare there for Freeview viewers.
Sky Three, Sky News and Sky Sports News (BSkyB's three FTA offerings) all went down for around half an hour. Back to normal now so probably just a fault. |

Man U doing the business for ITV last night. Can't see a repeat of those figures tonight.
Combination of a less attractive match, potential for football fatigue and Champions League on Sky Sports should see to that. |

Are we sure it's not just for one Friday because it's Comic Relief night?

ITV has announced today that it is extending News at Ten to Friday nights from March 13th, giving the ITV News flagship programme a consistent home in the heart of the ITV1 schedule. Since the relaunch of News at Ten in January last year, the programme has been broadcast Monday until Thursday. Looks permanent.
Speaking about the announcement, Michael Jermey, ITV Director of News, Current Affairs and Sport, said: "We’re delighted that News at Ten will now run five nights a week on ITV1. It’s a vote of confidence in the programme, which has performed well this year with strong journalism on all the major stories." David Mannion, editor-in-chief, ITV News, added: "We are extremely pleased with the performance of News at Ten. The programme's journalism and production values are of a consistently high quality. We very much welcome the decision to extend it to five nights a week.” |

I'm not sure I buy the whole "vote of confidence" in News at Ten now it has added 0.3m viewers.
I think its more likely because they were running the 10pm show with very little adverts anyway. I wonder where Al Murray will go. Very unlikely to go directly up against JR I would have thought. He could never beat him when he had a 35 minute leg up. Probably moving to Saturday or Sunday - if its coming back. |

The CW was all on repeats again. Despite winning 2 slots out of 3, CBS finished third on the night and last among the demo. Other News: Despite rumours that it wouldn’t even make it to the next TV season, The CW has ordered new series of Gossip Girl, 90210, Supernatural, Smallville, One Tree Hill and America’s Next Top Model. For the week of most recent ratings, Gossip Girl and 90210 on The CW had 33% of their viewing from DVR. NBC shows The Office and Heroes are just a bit lower. American Idol had the most DVR viewers, adding 5.5 million to its “live” audience. Unlike other shows, AI had a disproportionately high number of same day DVR viewers, no doubt due to its live nature. (DVR is Digital Video Recording, for those that don’t know). Tuesday ratings shortly |

USA Overnight Ratings Tuesdays ratings are a bit off due to the Presidential Address which dominated the 4 main networks from 9pm to 10.30pm and meant no new episode of The Mentallist and no American Idol. 8.00pm: CBS – NCIS...............................17.92m..........3.8/11......2.7/9 NBC – The Biggest Loser............9.65m..........3.6/10......2.4/8 ABC – Homeland Security...........6.16m..........1.9/5........1.4/4 FOX – Bones (repeat).................5.03m..........1.7/5........1.2/4 Presidential Address Ratings (9.00pm-10.30pm) NBC – 10,064,000 CBS – 9,747,000 ABC – 8,237,000 FOX – 4,802,000 With the exception of FOX, they all lost viewers for the last half hour which was mainly the Republican Response. NBC was the most popular with 18-49 viewers by a fair gap, followed by ABC and then CBS. CBS trailed FOX among viewers 18-34. CBS coverage appeared to benefit from NCIS lead-in, the effect slowly wore off and NBC overtook CBS for the last half hour and sneaked an overall win. At 10.30pm, it was repeats and filler. The CW aired the season finale of Privileged at 9pm to 1.6m viewers and isn’t expected to return. American Idol shifts to Wednesday night and Thursday at 8pm. Nobody seemed to benefit from its absence at 8pm last night. NETWORKS: CBS - 11.80m & 2.5/7 & 1.6/5 NBC - 9.06m & 3.0/8 & 2.1/7 ABC - 7.13m & 2.1/6 & 1.6/5 FOX - 4.89m & 1.8/5 &1.3/4 CW - 1.51m & 0.7/2 & 0.9/3 First numbers are audience figures followed by 18-49 rating/share and then 18-34 rating/share. Ratings are the % of Americans in a particular demographic who are watching a show. E.g 3.8% of American Adults aged 18-49 watched NCIS last night. Share is the % of those watching TV at the time (the same as for UK ratings). E.g 11% of American Adults aged 18-49 that were watching TV at 8pm last night were watching NCIS. "Networks" are the average ratings by network in primetime. For NBC, CBS and ABC that's 8pm to 11pm. For FOX and The CW that's 8pm to 10pm. Last night, due to the Presidential address, FOX ran until 10.30pm. |

More about NaT's move here:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2009...ive-night-week Most likely based on the back of PD's ratings. |

I thought the Presidential address was really facinating. Great speech, better than any of his previous ones.

I think it's a good idea to introduce News at Ten to Fridays. When Pushing Daisies runs out of episodes, they can schedule cheap film repeats at 10.35pm on Friday nights, and save a bit of cash.

The Presential Address benefited CBS and NBC winning Tuesdays in viewers and demos while FOX suffered without American Idol. I wonder if a new system could be adopted when DTV switchover occurs in response to a Presential Address such as the broadcasters taking it in turn to show the address throughout the Season.
The Mentalist is in repeats for two weeks but I guess that it will be all new straight through until the season finale. |

Well, I'm glad someone liked it. That Sunday 7th March 1999 is interesting (not the 9th, as I said there) because as I said it was one of BBC1's lowest rated Sundays ever. Here's what ITV had...
6.30pm Michael Barrymore's My Kind Of Music 7.30pm Coronation Street 8.30pm Millionaire 9pm A Touch of Frost Corrie got 19.8 million viewers, Millionaire got 19.2 million, which was in fact its highest rating ever, and Frost got 16 million. Meanwhile, BBC1 had this mess... 6.50pm Antiques Roadshow 7.35pm Wildlife Special - Wolf (repeat) 8.20pm Five Go Mad In The Kitchen (part of the build-up to Comic Relief) 8.30pm Love Town (docusoap on Gretna Green) 9pm Comic Relief's Great Big Excellent African Adventure 9.50pm News 10pm The Lakes (part nine of a ten-part series) 10.40pm Comic Relief Jukebox (another Comic Relief thing, this time with Zoe Ball inviting viewers to vote for archive clips) As you can see, a right mess. In fact that whole week when ITV moved the news to 11pm was dreadful on BBC1, on Monday at 9.30 there was a grim docusoap about the RSPCA which the following week was shoved to a late night slot, they had a Changing Rooms repeat and more Comic Relief fillers on Wednesday and because the Budget was that week, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday they had Party Political Broadcasts at 9.30pm. And there was Millionaire opposite Red Nose Day, which didn't help. At the time I really thought BBC1 was in dire straits, the schedules were hopeless. Of course, we weren't to know how quickly ITV would run out of decent new stuff and how soon BBC1 would do their own revamp which, in the long run, turned out to be far more successful. 7.10 Lovejoy 8.00 Summer Wine (rpt) 8.30 Birds of a Feather Then in autumn 1995, the early evening drama went altogether, to be replaced by 10 weeks of Challenge Anneka and a few weeks of Gary Wilmot's Showstoppers. So the schedule was 7.00 Summer Wine (new) 7.30 Challenge Anneka 8.20 Hot Shots (tips on wildlife photography with Simon King). 8.30 Keeping up Appearances (new) Then, after 10 weeks of that, we got 7.00 Just William (children's drama) 7.30 Showstoppers (songs from musicals) 8.30 Vicar of Dibley (rpt) (Some things never change) 1996 was even worse. Programmes were bouncing around the schedules to different days and times, and that Sunday night trend continued for years. At one stage in the late 1990s, opening a new issue of Radio Times every Tuesday was quite an adventure because shows were moving almost every week, and just about every night of the week. Sitcoms starting out in weeknight 8.30 slots were being dumped on Sunday afternoons. It was a mess. |

WWE wrestling is extremely popular with RAW on USA outrating Smackdown on MyNetworkTV. I wonder why none of the Big Four have expressed acquiring either show or even doing a Saturday night event. Wonder what Wrestlemania gets in ratings?
Wrestlemania normally get approx. 1m buys... but it does cost I believe in the region of $54.95 to buy, and about $65.00 in HD. |

I can't say I folllow them closely, but both those figures seem considerably higher than they have been getting the past few years (RAW - 4.5m-5m and Smackdown about 3m since the move). Quote:

Yep, BBC One got into a bit of a hash with its Sunday night schedules in the mid to late 1990s. ....
Then in autumn 1995, the early evening drama went altogether... 1996 was even worse... Meanwhile, I spotted this snippet in Charles Sale's TV sport column in today's Daily Mail: "But all is not so hunky dory behind the scenes at Setanta following the calamitous loss of one of their Premiership TV packages that is causing a major reappraisal of their business plans. Meanwhile, the financial woes of ITV are such there is talk they would consider selling their FA Cup rights if they could." I hope there's something in this and that, following their backing-out of F1, ITV also return the England and FA Cup rights and let the BBC take them back. ITV is losing money with every single FA Cup and England match they show due to the poor ratings and ad revenues. I'm sure they must be exploring the option along with all the other desperate cost-cutting measures being considered and implemented. I wonder if the Champions League might end up on the Beeb too? |
