I also think that separating the contestants into 4 categories of 3 makes them easier to remember. You can remember the "old" ones, the groups and their mentors. Whereas at this stage of Idol the numerous 20 somethings can get easily confused.

I don't think it should be too much of a problem. They're attracting very different audiences which I think is why CBS are thriving in that slot. I'd actually say being against something like Lost is more concerning for Idol than The Mentalist. Obviously what they don't want The Mentalist to overtake in total viewers, but that will be more due to pride and image.
