And thoroughly deserved too.

The competition sort of ruined the effect of the ending though.

Apart from that, a great hour of TV.

I also agree. Didn't stop me having a tear in my eye though

Spoiler
He deserved a happy ending, and it was beautifully written. So underplayed, the way he just walked out of work, getting a little wink from Catherine on the way out.

And the competition woman did ruin the end a bit. Not as much as the Compare the Market ads ruined the first Red Riding for me every ad break. I downloaded episode 2 and it's so much better watching as a movie.

So moving The South Bank show to a weekday, and using Will Young to help bring in the viewers made no difference to the ratings whatsoever.

If there's any justice it will drop and drop then get dropped. I can't believe how bad this show is. People like Adam and Joe can't get a show, but these pair can. I love Gavin and Stacey, but now find James Corden so annoying I can't watch it any more.

It can go as low as 600k at times so it was a bit better, but I think they would have hoped for more. The weekday 10.35pm slots are a curious mix now, often repeats but some new stuff as well. They lack a clear structure though.

And per Media Guardian:

"The cost of each South Bank Show, made by ITV's specialist factual and arts department "varies greatly" but also "depends heavily on the subject matter" according to an ITV source. A typical programme could cost £200,000 to make, the source added."

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2009...-recomissioned

So it must surely be a massive loss maker but presumably ITV will be reluctant to cancel it for "image" reasons.

This is a prime example of the sort of thing that surely cannot continue to go on with ITV in its current financial position.

It may not be as bad as some. UBS sponsor the show and it delivers a very upmarket niche audience. Sky seem to make money on Sky Arts so I wonder if ITV lose much on the SBS

Surprising to see ITV1 win the 9pm battle last night; I thought BBC1 or Five would have won, so credit to ITV.

The Mistresses rating is quite worrying - it's nearly a million viewers down from the previous series. I wonder if the BBC will recomission the show because the ratings aren't too promising.

Fantastic rating for CSI on Five, about what I expected for such a big episode. It's a shame that Five don't really ahve any other show on the channel capable of bringing in similar kind of ratings. Even Channel 4 have a few other shows other than Big Brother which are capable of bringing in BB-kind of ratings.

You would worry about CSI post Grissom (and with Brown & Sara gone as well). This might be its high point. I just dont think their replacements are a strong and some of the recent stories have veered towards the daft.

Women in prisons getting high ratings? I'm surprised no one has called for Cell Block H to be remade.... yet!

PS. Or Bad Girls!

It will be interesting seeing the ratings for next week's episode with Laurence Fishburne at the helm. I reckon it will still be in the 3m range.

The other CSI shows do well and occasionally pull in 3m. NCIS has been gaining popularity and has nearly hit 3m as well. I have high hopes for The Mentalist though I think it will pull in 2m at best.

I don't expect the BBC to bother with a Mistresses recommission now. I would imagine they judge 4 million to be pretty much the floor for their 9pm dramas. They're better off looking for something new - we haven't had much in the way of new drama for 9pm from the BBC all year.

Holloway did a lot better than we were all expecting, and CSI did superbly too.

The top tens are interesting too, and its noticeable how Channel 4 have taken over rzt's alternative list, as opposed to BBC Two which had a much stronger showing with shows like Masterchef, UC, and Oz and James just a few weeks back.

Very unexpected ratings in the 9pm hour last night! I didn't expect Mistresses to come 3rd at all. Great ratings for FIVE and they will be pleased after all the promotion. Also ITV1 will be very pleased to finally find a Tuesday hit factual over 4m-as George said time to bring back Bad Girls? I really did expect it to be nearer 2m!

Everything else pretty much the norm, apart from that 0.8m figure for a Marple repeat on ITV3!

I'm actually really shocked about the Hollaway rating, I honestly didn't expect it to rate that high.

BTW, The Wire is not airing on a Saturdays, it is airing weeknightly at 11:20pm from Monday 30 March on BBC Two.

I enjoyed S1 but am disappointed with S2, which seems to be in common with many others. You just know when a new male character is introduced that one of the "Mistresses" is going to end up sh**ing him. Lazy plots this series. If they can't improve them then I'm happy for it to end at S2.

Hmmm.....

The Boat Race 2009 - Sunday, 29 March 2009, 2:20PM - 4:30PM

The race itself starts at 3:40PM... they are having an hour and 20 minutes of buildup?!! That's a lot.

The Boat Race is starting early this year compared to the last few years when the coverage has gone upto 6pm, I think. Is this an ITV decision for the race to be on earlier?
