Not just you though no; it often seems to be the case that in the mad rush to regurgitate whatever press release BBC/ITV have put out this week, people forget to actually check whether it's already been mentioned, or even do the unthinkable and run a search, they just chip straight in and to hell with everyone else.

Pretty low ratings all round last night...then again there wasn't much interesting on IMO...

I watched "The Hottest Place On Earth" last night but couldn't help thinking, "why isn't this on BBC Two?"

Calm the hell down...to be honest...noone else has a problem with it at all apart from you...there's no need to be so petty/picky.

On the ratings side of things, it was an awful night for terrestrials with not much on offer. I passed on Cops with Cameras and BBC1's "BBC2" offering. They both got 'ok' ratings, but it'd be nice to see some comedy on Thursday's (instead of Friday), because kiddies like me are indoors, not outdoors like on a Friday.

Skins & JLC were good though.

I thought it was good (and looked stunning on HD) but just struck me as something that ought to be on BBC Two rather than BBC one

I am completely calm thanks. Who elected you 'Voice of the People' by the way?

It wasn't about being picky or petty. Rather, I think this thread is losing it's way a little bit. Am I not allowed to voice these concerns without being attacked? My post was perfectly amicable, I would appreciate it if your retorts were as well.

Back to the ratings, a very narrow win for the BBC last night. The football coverage on Five performed well. Seemed a dull match at first until it all kicked off in the last 10 minutes leading to a very exciting finish.

I agree, this thread is becoming very broad - it is reporting general TV news (albeit with only vague references to ratings).

And I will be first to admit - this is the only thread I come to on the Digital Spy forums on a regular basis.

A lot of the regulars here, including me, will look at some news from Media Guardian, Broadcast, etc - and post it on here.

My opinion is - the emergence & importance of the Ratings Thread is a microcosm of broadcasting nowadays. The success of programming is a reflection of its overnights rather than its quality.

And when the success of a programme is rarely a reflection of its quality, for example Moving Wallpaper or Panorama, it will get belittled by a lot of us on here, because that's how the TV game is played.

Here, we have realised the true importance of how ratings affects our broadcasters. Here, we are able to predict what will happen in the future by ratings, especially on ITV.

EDIT: I think the admirable attitude of rzt and DMN have helped this thread become a brilliant source for anything ratings related with their analysis & links.

ITV will be happy that Man City got through.

Also the prospect of a QF in the Champions Leage between Chelsea & Liverpool wont hurt either. Plus with Bayern Munich playing Barcelona this increases the chances of more English teams progressing further as it guarantees one of the big guys going out at the Qf stage.

ITV2
22:00 -The Justin Lee Collins Show: 328,000 (2%)

- seems very low for this show on ITV2. Maybe not all his fans know about his new show?

It will be interesting how The UEFA Europa League plays out with Five getting first picks and ITV4 and Setanta getting the rest. ITV4 get decent ratings for the UEFA Cup as do Five depending on whos playing.

Looking the next two weeks and it seems BBC One, ITV1, BBC Two and Channel 4 are showing a lot of factual stuff with a documentary on BBC One on how a Woolworths store became Wellworths which may or may not do well. Five must be pleased as its gives The Mentalist a chance to gain decent ratings with poor competition.

Well, I think the competition is more of a worry.

Skins - E4
EastEnders - BBC Three

These two shows are getting nearly 1 million viewers every night at 10pm, and both reach a young demographic.

This inevitably cancels out any chance for JLC to have a good proportion of viewers.

Personally, Thursday at 9pm would have been a whole lot better, seeing that there was NOTHING else on the terrestials (entertainment included).

Don't disagree with any of that. Not quite what I meant though. More the level of discussion is dropping a wee bit as too many are just popping on with one liners and clearly not even reading other posts. That's my only gripe; I have no problems with any particular individuals.

That does seem rather low. I must confess I was intending to watch this show but it clashed partially with Dexter so I decided I'd catch up on a repeat airing.

Timeslot could have been better; I think PJMillar makes a strong point above with regard to multi-channel competition in that slot.

Still, it's not a disaster by any means. 2% share seems fine.

It will probably be repeated loads of times as well

Yeah, there's a lot of flexibility with shows like this.

If I remember rightly, in the last season of Secret Diary of a Call Girl, it was getting around 500K on a Thursday and 600K on a Sunday, or something similar, I might be wrong.

ITV2 can repeat shows & get very similar audience figures - and it's a tactic that saves the channel a lot of money I'm sure.

Yes indeed, just ran a search on DigiGuide and each show is being aired 5 times and timeshifted also on ITV2+1 so 10 in total. The repeats seem to air in fairly high profile slots as well including Saturdays at 9pm and Sundays at 10pm so they are giving it plenty of exposure.

Must say the ads were quite amusing but the DS critics were out in force last night during it's broadcast and didn't seem too impressed on the whole!

Does anyone know how The Shield on Five USA Mpnday's at 22:00 is rating?

Seems like the UEFA Cup dented the ratings a little for the other channels last night. Good figure for five.

On that note, ITV1 will be very happy with how the Champions League draw has panned out they have Man Utd V Porto (1st leg of Quarters), Liverpool v Chelsea (2nd leg of Quarters) and in the Semis if results go to plan they could have Barcelona v Chelsea/Liverpool and Man U v Arsenal. Couldn't have been much better for them really.

Everything pretty much as expected last night-I expected ITV and BBC to be low in the 9pm slots with filler shows and little promotion.

Just a few pointers that I have noticed though:
-Emmerdale hasn't managed 7m at all this week and is in the mid 6m range already and it's only March and the clocks haven't even gone back yet! Just imagine the case in mid August!
-Excellent peak for FIVE at 10.30pm with 2.8m-they seem to be on a roll this week with many successful shows and I suspect the football dented The Bill a little.
-Decent enough start for JLC on ITV2, but I expect it's one of those shows that will increase across it's run through word of mouth.
-Great finish for BBF on ITV2 with a total audience of 0.7m-it's highest of the run. I suspect Harry Hill may have boosted it somewhat.
-A very low rating week in general for ITV1 and BBC1 with a lot of cheap programming bringing in middling 3.5-4.5m ratings...and I'd guess particuarly ITV will be showing more of this in the future.
-Next Thursday will be very interesting in terms of ratings with the main four airing what I think will be low scoring shows-great start for The Mentalist I hope!

It will be interesting how The Mentalist does for Five on Thursday as the show is a huge hit in America and they've been promoting very heavily and with the poor competition, I expect it will do 2-3m at best with the potential to go higher.

Skins was a bit down last night :/ dont know why it would be though TBH, why watch 8 episodes and not watch the 9th?

Paris Hilton did well!! im a bit shocked actually that the show has held on to 100% of its premier audience!

If it gets a good writeup in the paper etc I think that's very possible.

Trouble is, a lot of people simply haven't heard about this show so Five are going to have to work hard to generate interest.

I think word of mouth could be key as well, as at least with this sort of show there's no pressure to watch from the very beginning.

Five have certainly put a lot of faith in it; poor old House has been put on the backburner for the time being.

It is very compatible with their current US imports like CSI and NCIS so it won't have a problem attracting a decent sized audience but I agree word of mouth will play a part. NCIS started off in a low key slot slot on a Saturday but with 1m but it has grown its ratings partly thanks to Five putting it on Fridays and is now one of their big hitters.

I suspect when Five originally picked it up, it was to air after House at 10pm but when it started pulling in big numbers, they decided to delay House and move The Mentalist to the plum 9pm slot.

Talking of House, I wonder if they will move to Fridays since NCIS only has 19 episodes this season and will probably finish in Late April/Early May.

I keep hearing about The Mentalist. Is it a drama about a mindreader, or is it something else?

Not a lot of posts for me to read today. This thread seems a bit quiet at the moment.

Some decent ratings around last night, but nothing spectacular. I'm beginning to wonder if 3.5m is the new 4.5m in the 9pm slot for BBC One and ITV1.
