Good performance by The One Show - above 6m and just 1.1m behind Emmerdale.

From comments I've read in the past, am I right in thinking that The One Show's consolidated final figure is sometimes lower than its overnights? How does that happen?
Overnights measure the audience from 7pm-7.30pm, but when they change it to 6.57pm - 7.27pm it goes down because you dont have the audience tuning in for EastEnders.

Also, unlike most other shows you will not have a lot of people timeshifting The One Show - its not the sort of thing people will record to watch later.

Aha. As Holly the computer so sagely observed in an early episode of Red Dwarf, "There's a logical explanation for everything - with the possible exception of Little Jimmy Osmond."

Of course there's not really an excuse for that in these day and age. This is the computer age and the irritating little bleeders are capable of doing millions of calculations per minute, so they should be able to cope with a clock.

Maybe BARB ought to fit their machines with PDC - Programme Delivery Control used by some videos to start recording when the programme starts by reading a signal generated by the TV station.

But for most of the time from the mid 1950s until about 2001, the opposite was true - ITV1 seemed to just clean up on viewers for any old tripe no matter how good BBC1's rival offerings were.

The reason BBC1 has done so well in reversing that trend in the past 8 years or so is because of the vastly improved programming and schedules - coupled with ITV going to the dogs. If ITV showed quality programming that people wanted to watch, then the viewers would come and your theory would really be in tatters.
This is partly due to the satellite revolution. ITV used to be like the BBC -infact was sometimes better at being BBC that the BBC were. There was a a huge range of quality programming, including current affairs, wildlife, and for large periods repeats were a rarity.
Today, ITV has gone down a road, seemingly forced, and is branding itself as an entertainment channel. People will flock to BGT, DOI X Factor etc, but they may not stick around for other genres because they will not associate quality with ITV in these areas.
Drama especially-if you look at the huge successes of the nineties in one- off and returnable drama it really is a shadow of what it once was. The result has been that people dont always see further than Simon Cowell when they think of ITV.
The other thing-as you rightly say-the BBC(imo) has reacted brilliantly to the changing tv landscape and is just about the strongest it has ever been. It may be that if you look long enough amongst the hundreds of channels available you might be able to pick out a diet of the range of the tv shows the BBC produces-but why waste time when its already on your doorstep?

I dont know, but Iv always wondered that if Ant and Dec had been kicked into touch at the very first audition of Byker Grove, whether fate may just have been a touch kinder than it has been for Dick and Dom.

Hustle is doing very well at the moment and up on the last series, I imagine a sixth series is all but commissioned and the sitcoms are doing healthy business against The Bill and Masterchef.

Piers Morgan took a dip but I think it will increase slightly with the LA episode next week. BBC Two are on a roll at the moment with Masterchef and Victorian Farm. Channel 4 did good with TYY and Killer in a Small Town and Cowboy Builders is doing very well for Five and wouldn't be surprised if a second series is commissioned and Soho Blues did okay business.

I'm surprised Skins didn't drop after last week's dreadful episode. Clearly they've got a devoted audience.

It did drop slightly, back to the level of the first episode of the new series. But it's doing well so far and seems to have held most of the audience of the first 2 series despite a whole new cast. Fortunately last nights episode was better than last weeks rubbish.

The news ratings and The One Show ratings particuarly seem up yesterday, most likely due to the weather.

The soaps put in decent performances as did Hustle which seems steady now between 5 and 6m.

Great night for BBC2 with their factual output proving excellent in the ratings on par with ITV1 in both slots.

Cowboy Builders seems to be a surprise hit for FIVE and I can see it returning as it must be fairly cheap to make.

I'm shocked at the news of WITB being axed by ITV because it could bring in an audience of 6m, though as could Heartbeat! It seems nothing is safe on ITV's hitlist with The Bill, Heartbeat, The Royal, Trinny & Susannah and now WITB being targetted. I can see something like Blue Murder next for the chop with ITV securing Caroline Quentin for a cheaper drama series. WITB seems very expensive to make and it seems however high the ratings are the money it takes to make each episode just isn't worth it.

Very good rating for The One Show.... the fact that it was 1.1m behind Emmerdale is very good... considering something major happened in Emmerdale last night.

Only one episode managed above 6m (6.66m) in the officials last year. Apart from that, the actual Friday series 6 run averaged 5.2m viewers:

6.01 - 5.93m
6.02 - 5.11m
6.03 - 5.03m
6.04 - 5.18m
6.05 - 5.07m
6.06 - 5.03m
6.07 - 5.10m
6.08 - 4.80m

It must have come down to budget issues. I wonder what they'll replace it with? Repeats? Extended series?

I could see quite a few existing strong performers getting extended runs amid the recession. Because Friday isn't right for factual offerings, so it will need to be drama that fills those lose 8 hours. It would cost less to extend something like Primeval to 13 episodes, for example, than to commission Demons and there is less risk involved.

I think Blue Murder is ending anyway as I have read Caroline Quentin wants to spend more time for her children. I wonder if Coastal Productions will try to move WITB to other broadcasters as it still pulls in a decent audience.

I don't think BBC1 would take it and C4 don't really do drama anyway (and won't be able to afford it if ITV can't).

Not exactly ratings related, but breaking news today: "Sky secures fifth package of Premier League matches. More soon."

That's 5 out of 6 packages for Sky, only 1 we presume for Setanta.

Anyone else think Setanta could very well from this be on its last legs... I mean its subscribers will probably drop.

Now is the time for budding scriptwriters to come up with an idea for a drama featuring two characters and one set, cos it looks as if that's all an ITV budget is going to stretch to in the future.

Or they'll be commissioning dramas made by drama students who'll happily work for nothing to get the experience. (although there might not be any jobs for them when they've got the experience.)

I think that if Setanta are on their last legs then I suspect ESPN will buy it and rebrand as ESPN UK which would be a easier and cheaper option than paying over the odds for PL rights.

Neighbour's Fiver overnight ratings are hardly ever reported. Looking at BARB, it looks like it usually gets about 200,000-300,000 in the officials.

No Out of the Blue ratings have been reported yet since it started on Fiver, but it's probably extremely low considering it was only getting around 100,000 on BBC Two.

Wasn't this originally commisioned by Channel 4 with JLC? I guess they must have passed on it and ITV picked it up.

I really can see that flopping? And why do we need another game show on ITV - we have plenty!
