If great shows like QI and Not Going Out on BBC1 can only manage between 3.3m and 3.9m, what chance do ITV1's comedy hour have next week?

Next week will be very interesting in the 9:00 slot, I think BBC1 will win, but could Moving Wallpaper do a benidorm?
BBC1
- QI is struggling when it's such a good show. It's not a terrible audience, but I think Friday nights have been burnt out for BBC1 since Coronation Street moved a second episode there a year or so ago. It means that ITV always have the advantage going into 9pm, when before it was BBC1.
- Not Going Out needs to be put out of its misery, this series has been a disappointment. Starting to remind me of the dire Teenage Kicks on ITV
- EastEnders was a tad low, but its storylines are poor at the moment and there's nothing really gripping in the storylines. I'll expect it to be in the 8 millions for a while yet.
- BBC1 control from 10pm onwards, which is admirable and it just shows when you are consistent with your programmes, by showing the news & then either Friday Night with Jonathan Ross or Live at the Apollo, viewers will stick.

- Great share for Coronation Street at 7:30pm. It hasn't hit a 43% share in a few weeks I think. However, the 8:30pm episode always rates lower, and I always wonder why it never does as well as the 7:30pm episode.
- Pushing Daisies will surely be moved from the 10pm slot. With News at Ten now hitting 3m with good lead-ins, you'd wonder whether ITV might be thinking about scheduling it on Friday nights from now on. The best thing would be for Pushing Daisies to move to ITV2, where it should get a good audience by ITV2's standards.
- Taggart did brilliantly for a repeat. 5.6m (24%) is exactly what's asked for on a Friday night, and you wonder why comedy's have been commissioned in this slot when drama repeats will get you between 4m-6m. Perhaps Moving Wallpaper & Multiple Personality would be better starting on Thursday nights following the Billy Connolly travelogue, which would save ITV some money.
- Emmerdale is back up to sizable viewing figures and I think it's aim should be hitting 35% share every night, which is solid and should be attainable.

No BBC1/BBC2 race highlights? That's a surprise, I fully expected something around 10.50pm each Sunday.
Looks like the afternoon re-runs of early morning races will be limited to 2 hours not padded out to 3hrs+, ITV1-style.
Can't wait for this, back in its rightful home. If only we could have England matches and the FA Cup back too...

Yep, Waterloo Rd obviously and predictably suffered for the Brits (although that was hardly a hit, despite ITV lining up a trio of top BBC stars to present it...), and will recover this week. But it needs to return to Thursdays where it could be nudging 5m with an EE lead-in.

Yes, it just won the slot. But I wouldn't be surprised to see it lose out to Crimewatch this week. It was OK, and got better towards the end, but it was nothing like his various World Tour of.. series for the BBC.

Some ITV first run comedies have got lower figures than some of those Sunday lunchtime Allo Allo repeats.

Taggart doing predictably well in the Friday night crime drama slot. I hope the Beeb are taking notice of how well ITV has done with its hum-drum cop shows in recent weeks in that slot, and the endless Frost etc repeats that play there. The Beeb should try airing drama there and move the comedy to a place when its target audience might actually be watching.
QI should recover next week against "Moving Wallpaper - Yes ITV Really Did Commission a Second Series". Should be 5m+ I would think.
The fun next Friday will be on seeing if ITV1 can manage a hat-trick of prime time shows all getting sub 2m audiences. I think MW-YIRDCASS and Al Murray should just squeak past 2m, but it may be close...

I agree with most of this, though, QI deserves to do better, and Not Going Out does, too. They will be hit next week by the new comedies, although I think QI will beat Moving Wallpaper. It wouldn't surprise me to see Al Murray edge Not Going Out, though. It will be interesting to see how they do. As has been said above, Moving Wallpaper may do a Benidorm (I doubt it, myself, tbh), which only got 3.5m or so first time around.

It would very interesting if Moving Wallpaper did do a Benidorm, and it would encourage ITV that viewers trust their comedies and are willing to give them second chances.
I believe that at the moment ITV's comedy future is actually brighter than BBC1's - it seems to be moving forward anyway.
I still think that Moving Wallpaper is more of a male scewed comedy in the same way that Al Murray is and that's why I think it would be better following on from The Bill on a Thursday night. It's against BBC1 repeats, so I thought it would rate well.
And remember, when ITV launched Moving Wallpaper, it was on a Thursday night and it got 5 million viewers, but when it was scheduled on Friday nights, it lost those viewers.
It certainly did the comedy no favours that it was partnered with 'Echo Beach', as Moving Wallpaper is itself similar to Ricky Gervais comedies: The Office & Extras.

Ah, I didn't know that or I would've watched it. There was little advertising for it, and because ITV show so many repeats, I feel it's difficult to realise what's new and what's old with Taggart, as its used as a filler most of the time.

low ratings all round last night, QI was under 4m but I expect it will recover next week, BBC Two did okay with Around the World in Eighty Faiths and Natural World.
ITV1 did very well with Taggart but Pushing Daisies did awfully and I wouldn't be surprised if it got axed, Channel 4 did well with APITS and Kitchen Nightmares USA while Five did okay with Police Interceptors, NCIS and Numb3rs. I imagine NCIS will receive a small boost now that the ITV dramas are away for the next six weeks.

I agree, it can be very difficult to tell.
5.6m is one of Taggart's best performances in a while; recent new episodes have generally been getting overnights of 4.5-5m.
Given that Moving Wallpaper-Echo Beach was promoted to the max last year, including endless trailers in every single ITV ad break, and tanked, I think the best strategy for ITV this year would be to not promote it all, and see if ITV1's Corrie viewers just stay tuned at 8.57pm on Friday, assuming there will be some undemanding crime drama coming up.
Seeing MW trailers is almost guaranteed to have them switching over.

Are there anymore new Taggart episodes to come? It's annoying that the programme is used as a 'filler' to fill vacant 9pm slots, on whatever night. It's a really decent drama and still pulls in the viewers so ITV deserve to give it a consistent slot on a Friday or Sunday night at 9pm.
I think Moving Wallpaper might just edge it over QI next Friday night. I imagine viewers will be curious as to how the show has changed, now it doesn't have Echo Beach attached to it. Plus it has a Corrie lead in.

Let's Dance will slip next week, I'd imagine, although it'll still do well, and Takeaway will probably go back up, but I can see The Colour of Money falling below 3m. A swap with Harry Hill is needed.

Horrible rating for Colour of Money! (and means no points in the ratings game for me!) But brilliant for Let's Dance! And i think it was actually worth it (but then i did enjoy COM so :$ :P)

Let's Dance performed very strongly and is going to give Takeaway a tough time of it over the coming weeks.

I can see them using the upcoming FA Cup weekend to do just that.

I bet you wouldn't have said that had you posted 2 minutes later once you'd realised that ITV's massively hyped new Chris Tarrant gameshow, the programme that was going to be the next worldwide phenomenon that would make ITV millions, has just tanked even more, and pulled less than QI did the previous night.
So where does that leave The Colour of Money then, George?
Have to say I'm surprised. TCOM should have got 6m easy with the hype, and 7m or so for Let's Dance is astonishing. It looked absolute rubbish from what I saw. But then similar stuff like BGT or X Factor gets great figures too. Sign of the times I suppose...
I imagine Ant n Dec's House Party did better post 8.05pm than its average figure suggests. With a 3.8m (or less) lead-in, their first 20 mins must have been dire.
