After just 5 weeks of sales they have beaten Emile Sande to the top spot

The success in sales has finally became equal to the popularity in the UK for 1D so thats good.

When it comes to worldwide, I think that the success is the same as last year as the album sold around the same amount as last year (2.6 million).

I'm glad, solely because it cements the fact sales - music mean nothing.
Marketing is a wonderful thing.

I never thought I'd see the day when I was thankful for One Direction existing, but today's that day: had it not been for them, Emeli Sande would have had this year's biggest seling album like she did last year (with the same album).

If people had not bought it for their kids Christmas, I wonder what the sales would have been? I am quite cynical about albums being released near christmas

As spiteful as it may sound I did not want Emeli to what Adele failed last year as I just think Emeli is somewhat pants.

I know that, but lets be honest here, 2 weeks doesn't make a huge difference - they would have probably sold 300k more which would be the same amount they sold last year (2.9 million copies)

Don't like the album, every song is about love, so bland and generic.

Have you really listened to the album?

Very few songs on this album are about love

Midnight memories the title track is all about memories, parties, too many people in the Addison Lee

Don't forget where you belong is about exactly that!

Story of my life, little white lies and little black dress again not about love and these are just off the top of my head

No, that's quite an underestimation! They've been selling 400k every week apart from the first one (1.2 million). So did TMH at this stage last year, so the difference would rather be between 600k and 900k which makes a rather nice difference!

Despite this no uk artist sold more than a million this year. According to the BBC that's the first time that has happened for 20 years!

Album sales fall every year and are a fraction of what they once were.

Good on One Direction, it's a good album.

Well, I listened to the album and while I agree the first 2 songs you mentioned are not about love - the rest truly are. Story Of My Life is about a failed relationship, even if the video tried to tell a different story. Little white Lies and Little Black Dress may not be about love, but it is about sex, same as Better Than Words and Alive, while Why Don't We Go There also has a few suggestive lyrics. Does He Know, Right Here, You and I and Happily, Something Great, Half A Heart are ALL about love, regardless if it is about happy or sad love.

In fact, the only other song that isn't about love is Through The Dark and Best Song Ever.

So the album is ALL about love or sex so don't know why deny that. There is nothing deeper or different, it is about young love, typical boyband storytelling in songs, except they sing about sex this time to sound more cool and mature.
