Anyone think this will happen, if she gets that far? Only 14 months until EE 30th. I bet she will be killed off OR Phil will be murdered in a whodunnit

Nah, I think Danny Dyer will be the headline topic, either his murder revelation or being killed off

It would be more fitting if the 30th did involve the long running characters, like Ian and Dot

I hope not, but I'd like Dot to have an actual exit

She should get cancer and die, show the people of the UK how dangerous chain smoking is for once. I would praise that storyline highly!

Living 'til your in your 80s is not really going to send a message though.

It's not their job to preach.

that people actually do die of smoking - it would be poor if she didn't get cancer whilst Tanya, Peggy, Pat etc all had it whilst never smoking. EE needs to send the message that smoking kills

Yes, living until closer than 90 than otherwise is really going to emphasise the dangers of chain smoking.

It wouldn't, though. People are susceptible to anything at that age and I'd rather they didn't bother hammering the message that smoking kills. It's written on font 48 every time I nip out for some Richmond, so don't you think people already know? You have to accept people's choices and what they - perish the thought - genuinely enjoy doing outside being addicted.

It's not EE job to send any message about smoking or anything else.

Your point about Tanya, Pat and Peggy has no relevance. You don't need to smoke to get cervical, breast or many other cancers.

EE should not be sending messages - instead it should focus on characters and drama

She should die a somewhat bizarre death that occurs whilst spring cleaning, when an ill-placed bible falls from a high shelf & takes her clean out.

That would please me no end.

I could sit here & say to the missus ... "Matthew chapter four love."

DTC said something about Ian having a huge storyline that will last a while, I think he will be the main story for the 30th along with Sharon finding out Phil was involved in Dennis death

If she has reached 80 and is still chain smoking what message does that send to the British public? Quite the reverse I should think.

EE is all about contemporary life and the hard issues we face, so a smoking SL would be good though as someone on here already said, I don't think Dot would be best for this storyline as she is now in her late 70s on the show so it wouldn't be as effective if it was an elderly person.

As for 'sending messages', all drama should have messages behind it and an underlaying theme.

Dot has had cancer before about 10 year ago

They cannot kill off dot she there is not a suitable replacement for her character and there are few older females left as it is who could be brought back since they killed off pat, Angie (dens wife), kathy (but the last 2s deaths happened off screen so we could pretend that never happen (Angie) or they were mistaken (kathy). I suspect it may effect how long EastEnders goes on for.

I suspect that when dot leaves they will gradually reduces her appearances on the show to special occasions like christmas.

Look at the numerous celebrities Keith Richards has outlived, sometimes it just works that way.

Tanya has passive smoked for most of her life - growing up with Cora as a mother and then being married to Max. We don't know that Pat, Peggy etc didn't smoke in their younger years - in fact i'm fairly sure pat did in the prequel they did on her and even when she first arrived in the show.

People do get Cancer that have never smoked and equally life long smokers can get to their 80s or older and never contract it. There are certainly elderly members of my family like that.

I'm not saying there isn't a link or that smoking doesn't harm your health but it isn't a straight cause and effect.

Frankly, if there were going to do a straight 'smoking causes lung cancer' plot to set an example I'd rather they did it with a younger character like Max who will have known the dangers before he started (I certainly did in my early teens and we are about the same age) and went ahead and started anyway. Dot will have been well and truly addicted by the time the medical evidence really did indicate the dangers. It was more common to smoke than not to in the 50 and 60s when she was a young adult. That doesn't mean she couldn't have stopped, millions did but much harder when already hooked.

Yeah I agree, I think they should do a smoking kills storyline but with a younger character. Dot's early days of smoking was likely pure tobacco and not the processed crap in cigarettes these days so it wouldn't of had as negative an effect as modern cigarettes for someone who is say 40-50.

Its morbid but I reckon June will die before Dot does in my honest opinion. I don't think June will ever leave EastEnders. Despite her woo haa every now and again she loves the show dearly. I think it will be a Betty Driver situation.
