From the moment Mandy and Beth moved onto the Close before Trevor's arrival, up until Beth's death in prison? What are your memories?

It was fantastic.

Until Beth being killed off ruined it, big time.

Why did they kill her off anyway? Was it because Anna Friel refused to return?

Just found this clip on youtube of Beth's death - absolutely horrific, Mandy can hear her throwing up in the toilet and then she's whisked off and hours later Mandy hears she's dead as a result of a heart defect and she goes to see the body and screams! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXAnKFoL8uc

Remember it very well.......Trevor's Mother almost as evil as the man himself. God I loved Brookside more than any other soap until that ridiculous incest story / family moved onto the Close. Some of the best actors / actresses of a generation appeared in Brookie.

I loved the incest story with the Simpsons

I remember Trevor's evil sister poisoning Mandy. Also, Mick's stalker Jenny Swift holding him hostage in the same episode. Brookie is really the soap opera responsible for British soaps becoming sensationalist. Even tonight's EE with Ronnie killing Carl was pure Brookie.

Have I confused Trevor's sister and Mother?

Yes, although it was an easy mistake to make. Brenna Jordache was very matronly

As brother & sister they were just the most vile, insidious, pair and as ever Brookside broke new ground with their storylines.

Yes, it was a fantastic storyline, brilliantly told and acted. The most chilling moment in any soap ever, for me, was when Beth came home to find her mother lying beaten and helpless on the living-room floor, and then went upstairs in trepidation, peeked into Rachel's bedroom, and saw her father and Rachel asleep together in Rachel's bed.

Georgia was one of the most attractive women I've ever seen in soaps.

I agree - the end of that episode with Beth seeing Trevor asleep in rachel's bed and knowing what must have happened is truly the most disturbing thing I have ever seen on a Soap. Only Channel 4 and Brookside could have got away with it even though it wasn't explicit.

I saw the whole thing from beginning to end and it was brilliant although Beth's death was so sudden it never felt right. I know people can die suddenly from heart conditions (and it being a genetic inheritance from Trevor just made it all the crueller - he got her in the end) but it just seemed that Friel and Redmond fell out so she immediately went - a similar thing happened with Ricky Tomlinson a couple of years earlier.

I was a massive Brookie fan & watched the whole Jordache saga.

Anyone remember a guy called Phil Jennings from whom Mandy borrowed money or something else from? As I recall he was brutally sorted out by Barry Grant.

I totally loved and just could not wait for the next ep of Brookside during the Jordache saga (amongst other sls).

Truth is, before it eventually all went tits up, it was truly ground-breaking in many ways and opened the door to all the other soaps to give us the shocking and unprecedented (in soaps) storylines that we now expect and take for granted.

Brookie's influence on today's soaps is sadly unappreciated by those too young to have watched it in its glory days.

I still miss Brookside. Have very fond memories of watching the omnibus of a weekend even after watching the individual episodes through the week. I was a bit too young to really appreciate this storyline at the time but it's obvious to me now how influential it has been. I remember the finding of the body more.

Like my pal OJ, I watched Brooky from the very first episode to the last - and for the first ten or so years it was my favourite soap bar none.

Really miss it if I'm honest - it's no exaggeration to say it was unmissable in the 80s & early 90s - they pushed all the soap boundaries & tackled many a taboo subject.

I found this documentary on youtube about Beth Jordache, mostly describing her impact on lesbians and their disturbance about her being killed off, especially in light of her oppression by the patriachy:

It was primarily a story of domestic abuse (and a superb one at that). The daughter and mother killing the abuser and hiding his body was a bit sensationalist though, as that's not how most of these cases end....even if they killed him in self defence, most people's first instinct would have been to call the police.

I was very young at the time so can someone answer a few questions;

Did Rachel know her father had died and how it happened before he was found?
How long did the story go on for?

Actually could someone just tell me the whole tail please?

The Jordache sl was one of domestic abuse certainly, but in its 21 years of existence, (and it was born the same night Channel 4 launched), Brookie covered far more issues than that, including basic social snobbery, lesbianism, homosexuality, incest, parental abuse of a minor, teenage pregnancies, abortion, criminality, labour relations etc etc in ways that no other soap had previously dared to tackle.

Today's soaps owe a massive debt of gratitude to Brookie.
