Whether you like her or not - Kylie has achieved longevity in pop and that's something which shouldn't be disregarded. I'm excited to see what she comes up with in 2014!
Absolutely amazing. You forget how much she has done!!

Longevity is a rare thing in music these days, especially pop music. Kylie certainly deserves credit for remaining popular over a quarter-century.

With the likes of Madonna (if we must compare) it was fairly evident that she had star potential right from the start. Kylie, however, was an actress in an Aussie soap and had a couple of hits for Stock, Aitken and Waterman in a cheesy format which was commonly dismissed as "disposable pop". While most SAW acts from the period (Rick Astley, Sonia, Mel and Kim etc.) fell by the wayside after a few years Kylie kept going, confounding most people's expectations. After a few years even the NME was singing her praises, which, while somewhat tongue in cheek, was at least an acknowledgement that she had transcended her status as simply a cheesy pop star and had developed into a serious contender for proper star status (helped in no small measure by duetting with fellow Aussie Nick Cave).

As others have pointed out, it's all the more remarkable for the fact that this is a female pop star, and women struggle as they get older in an industry obsessed with youth, beauty and image.

On top of that she has managed it all with a fairly limited singing voice - I'm sure she would be the first to admit that she doesn't have the gravitas of singers like Mariah, Whitney, Celine etc. so she has never really been credited with being a "serious" singer but has maintained her profile as a pop artist, something which few people, male or female, have achieved in recent decades (perhaps Robbie Williams is her nearest contemporary in that arena).
I think the secret of her success in part was because she left SAW and re-invented herself musically. She may have been less successful than early on - her first 7 singles reaching the top 21 best-sellers of the year may have been a record-breaking debut - but she built some long-term credibility that way.

Absolutely amazing. You forget how much she has done!!
I have liked at least 1 song of hers from virtually every year she has released anything. I think the only exceptions are 1998, 2001 and 2012.

I'd just like to state that I'm a fan of both Kylie and Madonna.

You'd think that after nearly 27 years in the music industry people would give Kylie the credit she deserves. I'm not denying she doesn't have a lot of people to thank for her career but then so does Madonna and a lot of other pop stars. Kylie has reinvented herself time and time again and has proven what a damn good pop star and entertainer she is in her own right.

As for the people taking digs at Kylie's single sales, she has sold over 10 million singles in the UK to date, making her the 12th best-selling singles artist overall in UK history. She was also second to Madonna in terms of the most singles sold in the UK by a female artist until Rihanna nudged her to third place. People can take aim at Kylie's single sales last decade all they want but do you really think Madonna's single sales between 2000 and 2009, other than for big #1 hits like Hung Up, American Pie, Music and 4 Minutes, were really, really high for every single release? Single sales overall dropped a lot for a few years last decade. Let's just celebrate the fact that Kylie charted 16 top 10 hits between 2000 and 2008 including a million-seller in 2001. Especially for You, even though the song is pretty chessy, is also the 15th best-selling single of the 1980s in the UK, only one other female is above Kylie on the list and that's Jennifer Rush.

As for her album sales over the last ten years, every studio album she released from Light Years to Aphrodite has gone at least Platinum in the UK, that's not exactly bad going. Plus Ultimate Kylie has sold nearly a million copies in the UK.

Let's see if someone's beloved Cheryl Cole will still be scoring hits after 27 years.

I've been a Kylie fan since I was 15 when she hit big with I Should Be So Lucky and no one is more surprised than me at her longevity. She is one of the few stars these days that seems to enjoy an enduring goodwill from both the media and the general public. Whilst I agree that unless she gets radio support she wont have massive hits, what she has done amazingly in the 00s is proven herself as a vaue-for-money live touring act who can attract both casual fans of all ages as well as die-hards. She puts on brilliant stage shows and while no one would claim her to be a vocalist in the calibre of Celine Dion or Mariah Carey, she always puts 100% effort and a lot of pride into her live vocal performances and does not lip synch any part of her shows, and I really think audiences appreciate that - and of course this shows in the fact that her tours sell well and get generally positive reviews from the music press. You only have to look at acts like Madonna, Elton John, Cher, The Rolling Stones - none of them are having massive chart success these days but are all still out there playing to massive audiences (and making a lot more money in the process!)
Even Kylie has admitted that she's amazed at how her music career has turned out. She's no fool, she knows how lucky she is. Jonathan Ross said a few years back in an interview with Kylie that people were expecting nothing more than a couple of hits and she completely agreed with him. She's worked hard to come back from her commercial dip in the late 1990s to become one of the most successful chart and touring acts in the UK of the last decade.

Platinum is only 300k in the UK AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN! Check Blur/Oasis et al in the 90's or Kylie's first albums UK stats in 1988 for that matter!!
X 460'000
BL 370'000
Aphrodite 320'000

Platinum is a million in the US and you'll find different in Germany/France etc.

Chart certificates for different countries are VERY easy to find online.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...certifications

There you go. HAPPY reading! LOL
I'm so glad you pointed this out. I really wish people would research their argument properly before making stuff up.

I never made nothing up. LOL I made a mistake over the status of US and UK sales ranks which I edited straight into the post in question. I lived in America for several years until 2011. However because it was pointed it did indeed highlight that the Kylie fan making claims about Madonna's sales was wrong.

Any need for this? I thought Kylie fans didn't do stan wars?

And further still. Wait and see where Kylie goes with her new stuff before slating other artists... it may come back to haunt you.

Don't forget her last couple of singles.. Time Bomb only made it to 31 with excessive amounts of promo while Flower only got to 96.

Those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Making up crap again I see just like your misunderstanding re UK sales certificate (hehe) and then your further mistake re the certifications only came in 2009..

TB did not have excessive amounts of promo and was a complete surprise release of a Friday out of all the days she could release. Not an ounce of promo before hand, not even a 2 second snippet. It did well to chart after only 2 days of sales.

In the United Kingdom, "Flower" was ruled ineligible to chart on the UK Singles Chart. This is because the song was served as a free download when the public pre-ordered The Abbey Road Sessions.

I stand by the majority of fans, let's see their favourite artists release commercial albums in 27 years time. Unbelievable how little Kylie can bring out so much insecurity.

I know platinum status changed but this seems well dodgy.

The links which should confirm whether all Kylie's albums since 2000 have indeed gone platinum don't go anywhere. Is there another source? I'm not doubtful about her early 00's stuff going platinum but I find it hard to believe both X and Aphrodite have sold over 1 million in the UK to go platinum and I'm pretty sure Body Language didn't. Very few albums even sell that much here.... Unless it can be proved somewhere else I think it looks like a Kylie fan has edited Wiki to make her sales look greater than they are.

Edit. It seems platinum status in the UK was downgraded to 300,000 for albums in 2009. That explains it. I lived in America for several years so get confused with the differences in sale measurements.

However it also confirms only one Madonna album, MDNA, hasn't gone platinum in the UK. All the others have. Hard Candy by rights is platinum under this new rule so should be classed as it.

Firstly, the part in bold is utter rubbish. Secondly, if a person edits Wikipedia they need to provide proof that the edits made are factually sound, i.e. a good link to a trusted website, if any links or other forms of proof aren't provided or aren't deemed good enough then the edits are deleted by Wikipedia. I remember Lady Gaga fans tried editing the sales of BTW on there so it would read that the album has sold 10 million copies worldwide. Madonna fans also did it years back when they edited the sales info for the Music album to read that it has sold over 20 million copies worldwide, they also edited Hard Candy's sales from 4 million to 6 million. Wikipedia clamped down ages ago on people doing that crap.

Both Kylie and Madonna have sold a lot of records in the UK and are two of the most successful chart acts of all time, what's funny is some fans of each singer relentlessly slag the other off despite both Kylie and Madonna having a huge respect for one another and are known to regularly send their best wishes back and forth through mutual friends, not to mention they've both attended each other's tours.

In regard to a previous post about one copying the other, both obviously inspire each other. I remember someone writing on another forum (I forget the name) that Kylie has built her career on nothing more than plagiarism and being a Madonna rip-off, well I thought that was a bit rich considering Madonna is the one who has been successfully sued for plagiarism on several occasions while Kylie never has. A lot of people in pop music take bits and pieces and put a spin on it and a fresh approach. Neither Kylie nor Madonna are 100% original. The person who reduced Kylie's career to nothing more than an ongoing case of plagiarism also called her a cocky little upstart. Surely 27 successful years in the pop world means someone is way past being a supposed cocky little upstart? After all, Kylie only debuted about four years after Madonna did.

Some may not agree with this, but I think a lot of Madonna fans disregard Kylie or dislike her mainly because, other than Madonna herself, she was one female pop singer who debuted in the 1980s who continued to achieve huge success post millennium (Janet Jackson, another singer who has spoken of her love for Kylie, started off well but her nipple soon put an end to that). Kylie didn't become another Cyndi Lauper (love the woman), Taylor Dane, Debbie Gibson or Paula Abdul. Kylie and Madonna are the only two 1980s female pop singers who are still scoring hit singles, chart-topping albums and successful world tours today and some Madonna fans hate that, they hate that Kylie held her own and has had a long-running and credible pop career for decades alongside their beloved one. Of course, Kylie's lack of success in the US is one thing that's always used against her or as a way to diminish her achievements and career elsewhere on the planet. The reason Kylie and Madonna are so often compared and talked about in the same sentence is because they're contemporaries with long pop careers, a rarity for women. They've both sound tracked a lot of people's lives and are relevant today.

to be fair, its not kylie bringing out anything in anyone, not unless she posts here personally, which i very much doubt. unfortunately, there is definitely minor undercurrent, a small minority of immature fans that give her fan base a bad name. in this thread alone, there have been insinuations that other fan bases caused all the conflict - which just wasn't true, another fan hypocritically condemned another user for posting constructive criticism, when posts were removed from another thread only yesterday when people dared to question their "constructive" posts and now another fan seemingly wades into the discussion after just 4 posts bringing another unrelated singer into the discussion. no, there is without a doubt some goading going on here instigated by a petty minority and i am pleased that other people are also picking up on it.

has you ever considered just taking posts at face value without looking for a hidden agenda more generally? there is absolutely no evidence in this thread whatsoever of another fan base disregarding kylie by bigging up another singer. it was the kylie fans that first made the comparisons.

yes and this has been discussed on various relevant threads in exchanges with a kylie fan that had 2 profiles banned here for spamming these opinions in long winded posts copied from elsewhere. they incidentally, also spammed these same posts on youtube, other forums, fan websites of the said artist and even posted a string of scathing reviews on amazon. this subject has been done to death and its not even relevant to the subject in hand anyhow.

this all blew up over one fan suggesting another artist copied kylie's stage show, which was ironic considering kylie's tour was supporting a record that was produced by a former producer of that said artist. kylie's song writing credits aren't an exhaustive list and she has wrote none of her biggest worldwide hits, why would anyone consider suing her?

that was me i presume? you totally misinterpretation my post. i suggested that fans may not want to be too cocky out her future potential success due to outside influences beyond her control that i later quantified. i never once called her a plagiarist or a cocky little upstart though. it astounds me how some people read entirely different meanings behind quite straight forward and concise posts.

you know its actually ironic, because i had decided to give this thread a miss after some petty exchanges. however, its seems after many of the posts here tonight have inaccurately referenced my prior posts and considering my "beloved" supposed favourites were mentioned, perhaps my input was actually missed here.

i also find it quite ironic that some fans would also prefer to continue this ill will, rather than post about the video images that they were waiting to discuss here.

"#Lovers yes it's true I was on set shooting the video for my first single!!!"

A lot of that comes from you, sorry, I say what I see. What you accuse people of doing on other forums, you do yourself on here. Trouble making. It's all very good commenting on what such a such a person is doing on such a such a topic and other boring facts but this undercurrent and goading comes from you. The slight digs followed by a cheeky wink to cover your so called good intentions are very much see-through.

It all ends up in long winding woe me paragraphs with you, very rarely anything to do with the actual topic. Slightly passive aggressive hiding behind the odd facey. I saw it from the start and decided not to say anything. However your constant comparisons as to what other say and do as you're oh so innocent makes me smile and bought me to tell you how you might come across yourself.

...and YES isn't it just awful when one posts constructive criticism on another fan thread only to receive personal vile abuse back. After all aren't constructive comments what makes a forum

I hope I haven't caused offence. As I said I say what I see.

Back to something more interesting.
KYLIE

Wow, looked amazing at the press launch yesterday.

Excuses, excuses, Both singles flopped. Time Bomb had huge promo, Why lie? I could bring up a certain Voice performance for what was it 10 million people??? Flower was also on Radio 2s A list. You're acting like no one has ever heard the songs and Flower was NOT eligible to chart. Hench why it CHARTED officially at 96 after the Abbey Road Sessions was released.

I honestly don't see why anyone has to be insecure about Kylie. In reality she impacts little, if at all.

I don't need to post stuff just to convince myself Kylie is or isn't relevant. I will wait and see what happens with her new stuff. However in an age where big artists are struggling I can't see how Kylie who has already had difficulty with her recent releases is going to have the great success being predicted. My guess is that she will flop like Geri. At least on the singles chart.

Timebomb did not have huge promo. One or two TV show appearances is not huge promo. And that's likely because it didn't make much sense for it to have huge promo. Single promotion is ultimately album promotion and, in Timebomb's case, there was no album.

Flower was also on Radio 2s A list. You're acting like no one has ever heard the songs and Flower was NOT eligible to chart. Hench why it CHARTED officially at 96 after the Abbey Road Sessions was released.
The point stands. The sales of the single, which was released four weeks before the album was released, were rendered ineligible to chart. Yes, the song charted AFTER the album was released but by then there was no reason to buy the single anymore and who cares if the song charted at #96 when the album charted at #2.

I honestly don't see why anyone has to be insecure about Kylie. In reality she impacts little, if at all.
I am not insecure about Kylie. She's entertained me for over 25 years and will continue to do so, irrespective of her chart positions and no matter what you say about her impact "in reality".

I don't need to post stuff just to convince myself Kylie is or isn't relevant.
No, you've already made your mind up. But stop trying to convince the rest of us she isn't relevant and let us make our own minds up.

My guess is that she will flop like Geri. At least on the singles chart.
Ultimately, it doesn't matter, so long as her album is (a) good and (b) sells enough to take her on a tour. Then I will be perfectly happy.

None of us can tell the future but it suits me to think positively about it. But then I don't get any joy from predicting who is going to flop and then feeling smug when I get to say "see, I told you so."

Sorry but Kylie performed Time Bomb on The Voice for 10 million viewers.

That is huge promo. The song only made it to 31 off the back of that. Many artists have performed on X Factor and hit the top of iTunes within a matter of hours. I can see I've touched a nerve so I'll leave it there and let her new material's chart positions tell the rest of this story.. but I think if anyone is expecting number 1s for her then they are in for a disappointment.

I'm just realistic. I've also posted in the Kylie Appreciation thread on here more than most of you being defensive in this topic have. Infact I don't recall seeing any of you in there. So don't assume I'm not a fan.

no offence has been caused. i would actually have to consider someone's opinion credible, for me to be truly offended and i can assure you, that is certainly not the case in this scenario.

however, your post was rather specific and overly personal, but fortunately for you, i am not one for running to the mods over irrelevant personal criticism. indeed, posts were removed only the other day when other people challenged your contribution and they weren't half as condemning as you have been here. so you may well want to reign that in a bit, because i remember another kylie fan that got banned here for taking discussion to a similar unacceptable personal level.

frankly, i couldn't care less what you think about me personally, because i am not here to make friends and i don't particularly value your opinion either. i am here to post constructive opinions and will continue to do so on this thread, despite your best efforts to hinder my viewpoint.

And it seems we're already at an impasse since I so happen to disagree with you. But please don't call it "lies" and insinuate that someone else is biased when they simply don't happen to agree with your definition of what constitutes huge promotion.

The song only made it to 31 off the back of that. Many artists have performed on X Factor and hit the top of iTunes within a matter of hours.
True.

Although you're forcing me to mention that the iTunes chart is different to the chart which Timebomb charted at 31 in. On iTunes it was Top 10 within a matter of hours and that was before any promotion on ANY television show.

Have people had bigger hits than Timebomb? Yes. Has Kylie had bigger hits than Timebomb? Yes. None of that is in dispute. Does it predict the future, though? No it does not.

I can see I've touched a nerve.
The only nerve you touched was the one which reacts to claims that I am unrealistic if I happen to disagree with someone else about an artist's relevance. Especially since Kylie's relevance to me is for me to decide and isn't even up for debate.

I think if anyone is expecting number 1s for her then they are in for a disappointment.
That all remains to be seen but at least you're helping them manage their expectations, eh?

I'm just realistic. I've also posted in the Kylie Appreciation thread on here more than most of you being defensive in this topic have. Infact I don't recall seeing any of you in there. So don't assume I'm not a fan.
I didn't assume anything other than you have an opinion that she's no longer relevant. And I reached that assumption from words you've said in this very thread. Did I misinterpret you?

no offence has been caused. i would actually have to consider someone's opinion credible, for me to be truly offended and i can assure you, that is certainly not the case in this scenario.

however, your post was rather specific and overly personal, but fortunately for you, i am not one for running to the mods over irrelevant personal criticism. indeed, posts were removed only the other day when other people challenged your contribution and they weren't half as condemning as you have been here. so you may well want to reign that in a bit, because i remember another kylie fan that got banned here for taking discussion to a similar unacceptable personal level.

frankly, i couldn't care less what you think about me personally, because i am not here to make friends and i don't particularly value your opinion either. i am here to post constructive opinions and will continue to do so on this thread, despite your best efforts to hinder my viewpoint.
If you say so. Frankly your underhand insults, slight passive aggressive digs towards Kylie fans and constant criticisms about the fans are getting quiet see-through. I'd find your comments credible if you just came out with what you really want to say and were more honest rather than hiding behind smiley faces. Trouble making in disguise.

If I have something negatively constructive to say about another artist in another forum, I say it how it is. I don't hide behind a passive aggressive tone and make sly suggestive digs yet act all innocent and hide behind faceys. I much prefer being straight about things.

I'd rather maker a clear point instead. Btw I don't think anything about you personally that's the point. Just your very strange way of conveying an opinion.

The Riot vid from The Voice really cheered me up 1st thing this morning. Was a hoot to Kyloe looking like she's having SO much fun.
