Advice on freesat dish size!!!
Hi All
My grannys dish came down over xmas as the brackets etc were rusty and the dish and lnb were damaged , Sky said they would fix it and have quoted their £65 call out fee before they even look at it!! (Also it will be in a months time!!). I have decided after looking around to buy a kit and install it for her. The advice i was after is: Does anyone know the dish size i would need , im at the top of Scotland. The standard zone 2 dish from sky is 73cm x61cm but the closest thing i can find is 80cm x 58cm so would that work ok?? Any help would be appreciated Thank You. |

Any dish of a suitable area and a matching lnb will do the job. As they make so many million Sky dishes as already posted cheapest source is likely to be e-bay.

So i take it the sizes dont really matter??? I had a quick look on ebay before and some of the dishes cant be gaurenteed to work in scotland. The lnb feed horn shape has to match the shape of the dish to collect all this energy and also not look outside the dish area to minimise unwanted signal pick up. Sky dishes are oval so need a specific lnb, a round dish needs a different lnb. Sky dishes use a slightly smaller collar size so a lnb designed for round dishes won't easily fit. Astra/Eutelsat signals are weaker in Scotland particulary the Northern bits as it's somewhat outside the primary beam footprint. A larger dish will also have more signal margin in bad weather. No reason why you can't use a 1M round dish and a low noise lnb to get more reliable reception. |

Bit confused though, as you have posted in the Freesat forum, and stated a Freesat dish, yet phoned Sky, who will only do the above for subscribers

To receive Sky or Freesat in the north of Scotland it doesn't really matter whether you use a conventional dish(slightly wider than tall), or what is often referred to as a Sky dish (much wider than tall).
What does matter is the size. That far north, you should use nothing smaller than a Zone 2 Sky dish (73cm x 61cm) or a 60cm (wide)conventional dish. To be safe and sure of a signal 24/7 rain or shine I would be inclined to go for a 70 or 80cm conventional offset dish with universal LNB. Vin Blanc Last edited by Vin Blanc : 03-01-2014 at 11:03. Vin Blanc If by "conventional dish you mean an offset dish they are about 10% or 15% taller than wide but I agree that 70 cm wide would be advisable to allow for heavy rain. I have used a 50 cm wide dish as far north as Inverness & got 100% signals in good weather using a Foxsat HDR. David |

There seems to be a slight error in your first para, Vin.
