Spotify now free on iPad and android tablets.

This happened at some point in December but I only just recently found out and couldn't find another thread about it. (sorry if there is one)

Before, you needed a premium account to play songs on your tablets, which was £10 a month. You'd get all the extra features with that though.

Now it's available for free, but with ads. I'm not sure if there's a time limit. I thought there would be but I tried looking for how much time I have left but couldn't find it, so I'm just gonna assume its unlimited for now.

Thanks , I've downloaded it and like you couldn't see any restrictions or time limits.
I've since searched on the net and it looks like the app is available for iPhones and iPads , so they must have struck a deal with Apple somewhere along the line.

More like a commercial decision to get Spotify onto more tablets and phones with the advertising fees giving them another revenue stream. I doubt any specific deal with Apple was done.

It's nothing to do with Apple, except perhaps that Apple launched iTunes Radio in some countries which completes with Spotify. Other competition comes from Xbox Music, Nokia Music etc.

The business model that Spotify previously worked with was that PCs could stream for free, but phone and tablet users had to pay. They must have decided for financial and legal reasons to relax that so that mobile users could also stream for free.

I normally just buy music I want off iTunes , so I can't understand why Apple would let me listen to a song I just paid 99p for, be available freely on my phone which I can make a playlist for and listen to in a docking station just the same .

It's free on iPhones too but you have to listen on shuffle.

The free versions on tablets and phones are streaming only I think.

Can you just cancel your monthly subscription then and carry on for free with ads or do you need to uninstall and re-install from fresh?

eta: decided having read the reviews to remain a paying customer. couldn't be doing with the restrictions and ads.

I don't think so, I canceled my premium free trail and didn't have to re-install.

It's free on Android as well, but shuffle mode only.

Shame, but might come in handy if I fancy music and not near a computer.

Is there still a time limit on the desktop version?

It seems that for the first six months of you making an account you can have free unlimited access, after that you are limited to ten hours a month without a subscription.

There is a lot being said about it on music forums and it seems not everyone is having the same experience. It looks like there are little glitches here and there so you may be lucky and never experience any limitations even after six months or it may kick in straight away.

They've taken away the 10 hour limit now.
