Who was Matt Smith?

Matt was the best Doctor, just like the other 11.

Matt Smith was a great Doctor. There are only two Doctors that I don't enjoy watching, but it wasn't their fault the BBC wanted rid of the show and strangled the life out off it.

No he wasn't. Matt is one of my favourite doctors. Such a shame he was saddled with some pretty rubbish stories, that annoying incomprehensible arc, the ponds and that woman with the big hair. If it wasn't for these his era would have been so much more enjoyable for me. Matt actually made watching it quite bearable. I like Clara also

So was he the worst ever Doctor?”

There is a certain warmth that Troughton put into the character that has been displayed by every subsequent Doctor (even the 6th at times)bar one...

I just didn't get that from Eccelston's Doctor at all.
He was the only Doctor except Hartnell not to have that quality and obviously Hartnell didn't actually have a working time machine so he can be forgiven for not putting something into the character that was bestowed on it by his successor...

So for me Eccleston is the worst Doctor, because there was something in his portrayal that said he didn't quite "get it"

Well said.

As the Brigadier once put it: "Splendid chaps. All of them!"

So far as Matt Smith is concerned I very definitely fall into the camp of liking his portrayal but feeling he was often let down by the poor quality of his scripts (a bit like Sylvester McCoy really).

As an aside, did Matt Smith's Doctor remind anyone else of Captain Jack Sparrow when he did his twirling on the spot movements with his arms up by his sides?

No, in fact if it wasn't for him I would have stopped watching the show, simple as.

For me Matt Smith will always be the wasted Doctor, so much potential after a wonderful debut turn in series 5 but ultimately sidelined during series 6 in favour of the slap dash Pond's arc and the truly awful River Song arc. But it was nice to see him come to the fore during the arse end of series 7 and the two 'specials'

Unfortunately the show, and therefore his character had become so bogged down In the showrunners attempts to create 'mythology' that the Doctor was always second fiddle to everyone and everything else.

Such a really nice guy as well.

I dont think there can be a worst Doctor, each o fthem has their own style, I would say he is my least fave Doctor and the reason , along with SM , that my interest has fallen over the last 3 years, but there is no worst. Along with me not liking eleven was the awful selfish pouty Amy, and that made things worse for me, I was pleased when she left but I still couldnt take to MS the way that I had with some other Doctors.

I am glad he has gone, and I am so excited for PC, and hope that SM writes a little better for him.

Matt Smith, the worst Doctor? Not by any stretch of the imagination.

I am glad Matt Smith has actually left now, maybe it will be a bit less cbeebies and a little bit more adult with the new Doctor.

Enjoyed him when he stopped being so random. "Oh it's a fez! Oh it's a jammie dodger". Think he's genuinely a bit of an odd ball in real life.

But worst, no. Don't think he had the best scripts, but he wasn't the worst by any stretch of the imagination.

I started watching Doctor Who when I was 6. I can vaguely recall watching an episode of The Planet of the Spiders, but my first proper memories of the show were of The Ark in Space.

Tom Baker was MY Doctor - they always seem to say your first Doctor is YOUR Doctor, and for me that's definitely the case.

Each Doctor following on from Tom had something I liked about them, and some had things I disliked. I think my least favourites were Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy, but they each had stories I liked a lot and I wouldn't say either of them were 'the worst', they just weren't given their full time to develop their part of the character properly. (Even Tom's era had pretty dire stories).

Then along came the TV movie with Paul McGann - brilliant, but a rubbish storyline, and again he never had the opportunity to develop beyond the movie on TV.

And then the show came back properly. Christopher Eccleston was excellent, but he was replaced by the brilliant David Tennant.

And I thought he couldn't be bettered - but then we got Matt Smith.

I find it hard to choose favourites, because each Doctor has stories that are superb and stories that are dire, and there are characteristics about each that I both love and hate. To say any Doctor is the worst is to miss the point of the show - it's always been about the same character, there are just many facets to the Doctor and we get to see different facets in different incarnations, not all of them nice. He's a complex character, and to have him always nice and predictable would be boring.

Going back to my original comment about Tom Baker always being MY Doctor, there has never been a point where I've watched a later Doctor and thought 'Please come back Tom' or 'come back whoever', and I've never wanted any of the actors to move on early, because even with stories and actors I've not been overly fond of to begin with, they all developed over time (or at least those who were given the chance to did), and there were always better stories around the corner.

The show moves on, and I'm now over my sadness that Matt has left and I'm eagerly awaiting Peter Capaldi to make his full entrance in the autumn.

I might say 'he's my least favourite Doctor', but I never say 'he's he worst Doctor'.

If someone asked me who was my favourite, I would always say it's whoever is currently playing the role, because that's the one where we're getting new TV adventures - good or bad - and the one who's now continuing to develop the character of the Doctor.

Ask me who the worst is, and there is no answer.

I've often said that despite my dislike for the 9th Doctor that he had some really good stories and sometimes that can carry you through the show if a particular Doctor isn't to your liking.

As for the 6th and 7th Doctors, I think they are given a hard time when they don't deserve it. Colin Baker had a bad start and his costume was crap but overall I thought the vast majority of his stories were fine. On the other hand, McCoy, like Matt Smith, was handed some crummy scripts but he stood out in all those stories that were dire. So both these Doctors as you say never really were given a proper chance to show their potential.

Sometimes people will say they are the worst Doctors without really appreciating all the facts but I do appreciate they aren't for everyone.

I totally agree with this.
It was the Ponds and truly awful River Song that tinted his era.
Matt was a great doctor and delivered great performances. I enjoyed him a lot more since the departure of the Ponds in the second part of series 7 and in DotD & TotD. I am glad he was given those opportunities to show how great he can be.

I didn't think he could fill David Tennant's shoes, but David was soon a distant memory.

Christopher Eccleston (with Billie Piper as his assistant) is still my favourite of the three though.

Actors are only good as the material they're given. I thought Smith did a great job as Doctor, though I have not been a fan of Moffit's show running.

I think the worst was Colin Baker, with no disrespect to Colin. I've come to realize that his Doctor was a victim of circumstance.

Matt Smith has been my favourite new who Doctor, and close to being my all time favourite. Tennant, along with Peter Davison, probably ranks as my least favourite. Disagree with the idea that Matt's stories were bad, series 6 was far superior to the mess that was series 4! IMHO of course.

Good actor dealt a bum hand really. His portrayal isn't exactly what I like to see but that is just my opinion. His OCD-ish, manic, "I'm mad me! What am I like!" character just left me cold. And the fact he had some of the most dire and incomprehensible stories of the entire series didn't help. But I've enjoyed his acting in other things so will certainly keep an eye out for stuff he will appear in.

Without doubt.

I think that the original Doctors (pre Ecclestone) were all superior to Matt Smith.

For me, Patrick Troughton was by far the best.

I agree with this. As well as building on the generic traits of the Doctor, I think each new actor should add something to the role. At the moment, it's unclear what Capaldi will offer- apart from a change from fresh-faced Doctors.

I think that Smith is a good actor but the dialogue was so irritating. Whilst actors can do a good job with bad scripts they can never do a great one.

To say he is the worse Doctor is wrong, you may not like him but he took over from David Tennant, that was never going to be easy, but it is his Doctor who managed to expand the show, just look at how well the show is doing here and in the US, he had the most difficult job taking over from such a hugely popular doctor, but he managed it, and that's something that should be commended, he doesn't deserve the criticism he gets, he is definitely not the worst Doctor in the general publics eye, maybe he is to some people, but he has more fans than haters.
