You say that now but he was very popular at one point.

I liked McCoys doctor because for one thing he was probably the darkest doctor of the lot.

He didnt have to tell you his plans and if you got caught in the cross fire its your hard luck.

Yes, you're probably right. I would imagine a poll of 7000 Digital Spy followers would give different results to 7000 Doctor Who Magazine readers.

No. Colin Baker and McCoy were worst than Smith. Smith was also marginally better than Tennant.

So was he the worst ever Doctor?”

Watch anything from Colin Baker's era or Sylvester McCoy's first series and you'll see no. Not. By. A. Long. Chalk!

Fine then, "least liked", "most loathsome" etc.

I think you'll find it's Peter Capaldi!

Okay - final answer! (from me anyway)

Matt Smith was a good Doctor - at first! But his continual spinning around and perpetual use of that F****** Sonic Screwdriver and the timey-travel reducing Amy, Rory and River into nothing but numbers, Rory dying every week, it got a bit tedious to say the least!
It was quite refreshing to see Clara turn up in the end! Even THAT got complicated!!
So NO!! I did not like Matt Smith's Doctor role at all! It was like a soap-opera with the Amy-Rory-River thing for most of his tenure! It will be looked upon as the "Amy/Rory Era" in years to come!!

I liked Amy, then I didn't. But I don't dislike her that much, that's reserved for the walking annoyance machine River Song, who became so insufferable I kept wishing we'd have a sad ending where a giant space elephant squashed her.

Matt Smith being the one who got the BAFTA nomination for playing the part. That's generally what happens when lots of people think someone is an actor. The fact that you don't does not, in this case, mean very much.

By you.

Yes, it would be good to see another story written by Paul Cornell. I wouldn't be so keen to see another story like Aliens of London/WW3, Love and Monsters or Voyage of the Damned.

Well at least Colin Baker has charisma!

Interesting side question - is it possible to be a great actor and a terrible Doctor, or a terrible actor and a great Doctor? Has anyone been either of those so far?

Colin's one of my favourite Doctors. For me, he's right up there with Tom and David. A real case of leaving the audience wanting me. Thank goodness for Big Finish!

I remember as a 8 year old being gripped by his performance on the trial series mind you I missed the first 2 episodes.

Personally not seen that so far. Maybe Capaldi will break the mould? He's a terrible actor, but mayb......no. I can't pull that off.

Trouble with any best worst Doctor debate is that people tend to remember the more recent Doctors in a better light than the classic Doctors. This is particulaly true of younger viewers and those who have only come into Who since its relaunch. The obvious exception of course being Tom Baker. So surely the debate should be who was the best of the Classic Doctors and who is the best of the Nu Who Doctors.

Well I suppose if 'people' just means the general public, I imagine most of them have forgotten who the original doctors were.

But the situation on boards like this and among the readers of DWM is quite the reverse. While posters will always have different views on different Doctors, everybody can pretty much agree that disparagement of the old show would be taken as ignorant and arrogant, whereas of course disparagement of the New Doctors is taken as a badge of authenticity by some posters. No names, no pack drill etc.

Admittedly, I loathe River Song equally, too. But I don't really consider her a companion. More a tedious annoyance that kept being thrown at us.

I'm not a big DW fan and couldn't name a worst but my favourite (that I've seen) was Ecclestone. It will be interesting to see how Matt Smith's career goes. I'd like to see him in other roles before judging him really.
