I presume if i bought a Second Hand Nexus 5 that Google and LG would not touch me with a barge pole regarding warranty unlike apple.

Buying direct from google would be the sensible choice im guessing.

No, you're confusing a manufacturer's warranty with a consumer's rights against the seller.

Manufacturer's warranties are in addition to consumer protection laws and the terms and conditions are entirely at the manufacturer's discretion.

EU consumer protection law says that consumers must have at least 2 years to raise a claim against a seller but we already have greater protection than that here in the UK under the Sale Of Goods Act.

In the UK LG provide a 1 year non-transferable manufacturer's warranty for a Nexus 5 to the original purchaser, providing it was purchased from an authorised reseller.

For a second hand phone your rights would depend on the circumstances. If purchased from a business then you have consumer rights law protection, but if the purchase was from a private individual then the consumer rights laws do not apply.
