How to recover photos from samsung s4 on android 4.3
Please help, I took my Samsung S4 on android 4.3 to a Samsung dealer as I had problems with my phone holding its charge, apparently there is a bad batch of these phones, mine being one of them, was asked to leave phone with them while they carried out the repair.
On my return they had replaced the battery and fitted a new charging port. BUT ALSO had installed/upgraded the software from version 4.2.2. I was not informed they were doing this, which involved doing what they called a flash or a factory reset. THUS I have lost all my photos, as you can imagine i am far from happy especially as they were recommended to me by Samsung. If i had lost my photos and music etc through my own stupidity of not backing them up I could except it more but not from Samsung. Does anyone know how to restore this data, I have trawled the internet but nothing seems to be working. I have tried loads of programs on how to Root, carried out instructions but they dont seem to work. Please please help. Thanks |

My recommendation would be to root, then use 'dd' to create an image of the user data partition onto an SD card.
What exactly have you tried so far that hasn't worked? |

i have tried to root the phone but there is no indication as to whether it has worked or not. Have tried several programs and none of them appear to work.

Well run any app that requires root and it'll be pretty obvious if it's worked or not...

I have tried Undelete app but says I'm sorry your device isnt rooted. Have tried Dr Fone, ICarefree, run from my computer, none of them seem to work.
A daft question, but what would be displayed if any of them had worked? What would be the reason for them not working? |

Normally you'd get a prompt asking if you would like to allow this app root access - grant or deny.
If you're not getting that, and the app says the device is not rooted it's probably... not rooted. I would sort that out first. The most reliable way I've found is normally using ODIN. http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/galaxys4-lt...llybean-526458 |

Why are you stating the obvious? Youve only said what ive already stated in my post. If you cant say anything helpful then be quiet.

Is there any chance you have you your photos automatically backed up to your google account or dropbox?

Maybe. Daft question but how would I know. As I said previously if it was my own mistake I could accept it more, but for the Samsung dealer just to go ahead and wipe my phone without asking first and at least giving me a chance to back it up is totally unacceptable.

Ironic, I'm usually the one being unhelpful in threads.

As somebody said - did you setup Dropbox on your phone when you got it as I think the S4 comes with free storage like the S3? If so all the photos you have taken should automatically be backed up to there. |

Google Plus also likes to bug you into using their auto-backup too

If you want to check if you have root on your phone, go to the Google Play store and search for "Root Checker". Install and run it and it will tell you if you've been successful or not.
You will have been asked when you set up the phone if you wanted to back up your photos to Dropbox. You need a Dropbox account for this to happen, so if you didn't set one up at the time or link to an already existing one, it won't have happened. As also mentioned, Google Plus wants to back up your photos as well, but again you would have to have given it permission. I'm surprised you stored photos on the phone itself - you get an option in the camera settings to store them on the device or the memory card. As far as I'm aware, the memory card isn't touched during a factory reset. I admit I haven't done anything radical to my S4, but I've factory reset, flashed and rooted my Galaxy S2 and it kept all the photos and videos I had on there. Hopefully you'll get your photos back, but at least you have a few options for the future if you don't. |

Some photos go on the internal memory even if you select SD card - usually only happens in burst mode though and it should switch back to SD automatically afterwards.

if you don't remember installing drop box, then you probably didn't.
You won't be able to root your phone if it's locked to a network either. |

Any time a phone/tablets/pc has work done on it it's very common for everything to be wiped from it. |
