Nvidia last year designed one of the best CPU's of the year they have now gone even further now and have truly thrown down the gauntlet. I will let you all read the links this is the future and it has arrived now.

This completely blows Apple's A7 and Snapdragon's new 805 out of the water.I honestly am beyond words I seriously did not expect this and shocked beyond belief.

If what they claim is true and honestly I kind of believe it is. Console gaming has now a serious competitor in the Gaming industry the technology is clearly now available and developers are already ready to use it.

This is a huge step forward and Nvidia has shown they mean serious business completely throwing down the gauntlet.

It will be interesting to see hardware with this in, both the dual A15 and the dual A8 versions - and get Anandtech's review/benchmarks.

I completely agree with this can't wait see how these perform it certainly is a step forward though. The 64Bit version and the new ram that is around would make quite a powerful device.

I can see why you would think that and I agree to an extent but going from tablet to smartphone is a far smaller leap than PC to Tablet.

Not really, since there *are* full PC tablets around. Difference in battery size between a full laptop PC and a tablet isn't much different than between a tablet and a smartphone. It might even be bigger.

Qualcomm have said Snapdragon 805 is a quick fix as Apple stunned them with the A7, and its not at all optimised.

It will be interesting to see if Nvidia have jumped on 64bit with or without optimisation, and if Apple's A7 has more capability in the design already (which I suspect it has given the companies/people they bought to do CPU design).

The 64 bit design was already there, as it was designed by ARM and then licensed out. Apple just added a little on to the design, as probably 99% of the real work had already been done by ARM.

The K1 is an interesting advance in mobile designs, but it doesn't offer desktop class GPU - at least not the current generation. K1 - 192 compute units. iirc, the desktop NVidia units have 5-10x that number of compute units. The PS4 has 1152 compute units ....

It is certainly a step forward obviously advancements will continue to be made but I believe this is the best Mobile CPU certainly the best GPU at the moment.

192 cores? A typical app is a sequential affair. Games can benefit from many cores to render 3D models, but 192 sounds like a gimmick.

192 GPU cores - not 192 CPU cores. Graphics tend to benefit from massively parallel processing. Definitely not a gimmick (unlike 64 bit - which for the moment is definitely a gimmick).

With this processor in a mobile or tablet, connected to a TV via HDMI ... it'd make a fantastic pocketable games console.

I misread that, so many GPUs makes sense, probably preparing for 4K and 8K UHD.

4K. In a mobile??? I can understand that from a pure spec perspective, but in terms of actually being useful ... nope.

But it'll allow for PS3/XBox 360 levels of graphics in games. Which will be utterly useless on a mobile. But would look stunning on a 10" 2560x1600 screen.

Could also be used in laptops as a main problem with laptop is the size of graphics card. One of these chips must be equal to inter grated graphics or even better perhaps.

5W power usage. I know there are some great battery tech improvements coming this year but this is Tablet only, unless under clocked to hell. Nvidia do have a habit of massive headline boasts...

In fairness though a smartphone doesn't really need something like this but it clearly means that tablets could become gaming machines. I am going to be watching this a lot hopefully it gets paired with decent hardware and developers get behind it.

Not for mobiles, tablets. I think that's where the specs wars will go. And maybe for iPhones

I did say so in post #3 Now that you mention it, it's probably just "power" tablets too, not your average run-of-the-mill models.

5W is actually pretty high even for a tablet. With an iPad sized 25Wh battery you're still only looking at 3-4 hours of usage once you account for the screen and RAM and so on. Intel have a full 64-bit quad-core x86 CPU with integrated graphics built to a 2W design power.

And although the Intel has inferior graphics power, it'll run the full desktop edition of Windows 8.1 and any existing Windows application.

I really don't see this sorta crap as necessary in the laptop market. We already have decent laptop graphics chips based on the same architecture with over 1500 cores of the same type used in this unit let alone 192.

In fact, using the Kepler architecture makes the Tegra K1 sounds like a shrunk down laptop graphics card to begin with.

In fact we already have a full range of laptop graphics cards available that range all the way from below this to units that match top-of-the-range desktop graphics cards from a year or two ago.

Apple wouldn't buy an off the shelf CPU/GPU combo. They'd take an off the shelf CPU/GPU combo, add on three instructions and call it a radical new design ....

4k will probably first enter the consumer market in significant numbers on some kind of mobile device.

tablet probably. but mobiles will follow.

Oh yes, 4K will come in a tablet soon enough.

If it comes on a phone, that would be stupid UNLESS the intention was to run native 4K games/content for outputting to a 4K TV.

And I am not sure I'd want to suffer the impact on battery life for the 99% of the time I wouldn't be hooked up to a TV.

It's not a question of needing something, as an OEM you can't really reason that something is not needed. Competition comes with something, sells it as the next 'it' thing and you can only try to do better. And there's not much maneuvering space atm, Apple's innovations lately are: thinner, lighter, more pixels, more bits. 4K is coming to tablets I am sure and I would not be surprised if Apple came with 4K 4'' screens, too

Apple doubles up every time (bar when it went for more of a widescreen ratio) so I guess the next step up will be pretty significant!
