smoking. Well I'm over exaggerating, but a dancer for many years, and still looking fit, just surprised to see him having a cigarette.
Quite shocked at Lionel Blair....
To my knowledge at least 2 current Strictly pros have been photographed smoking and Blair may have started in an era when the risks weren't as well documented and it was more socially acceptable.
I'm more shocked to see younger ones smoking these day. Most of the over 50's I've known over the year either smoked or used to.

And yet is still alive at 82 and capable of dancing
Lionel has been harmed by smoking. When he appeared on the BBC show The young ones he was told he was suffering from emphysema and was in very poor health in comparison to the other stars in the show.

It can't be that bad if he is in the BB house. If he was very ill they wouldn't have him on the show. My dad (a non-smoker) is the same age as Lionel and I would say that Lionel is far more sprightly.

Smoking seemed to be very popular back in the late '70s from what I saw. It was probably even more popular in the '60s. Lionel could very well be too hooked on them to try and give them up.
Also due to medical reasons he had to have his own bed so not that healthy either and to be fair they haven't exactly done anything overly strenuous yet.

I don't know what level of activity you expect from the average 82 year old
but IMO Lionel looks to be in pretty good shape compared to most. Take a look around your local care home where you will see the majority of that age snoozing and dribbling.

Dancing is a strenuous activity and requires a lot of strength.
My ex worked at Sadlers Wells. If I went round the back to the studio bar you'd often find the dancers would be sprawled about after a rehearsal or exercise class and about half of them smoked. It acts as a good appetite suppressant.
