BT Fibre Speed test

What is the best most accurate method of testing the BT Fibre connection I have into my house

Is there a way to Interogate the HH4 to get a true result ?

Use this site http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/ and then click on the "Further Diagnostics" button.

Make sure you have followed all of the instructions though and nothing else (ie Utorrent) is running.

It's not the HH4 you'd need to interrogate, it is the Modem, you need to flash an unlocked firmware and it's not worth the effort for the extra stats you get.

Try downloading the Ubuntu Torrent from here http://releases.ubuntu.com/13.10/ubu...64.iso.torrent

It's generally found it much more accurate way to judge "real world" speeds as it's large enough to max out your connection and very well seeded. Speed test sites have too many variables ie server load, distance congestion file size etc.

I get about 7.2MB/s on a 65Mbit Plusnet (BT) Fiber connection which is pretty much spot-on. On your 75Mbit connection I'd imagine you'd should be hitting around 8.4MB/s (you have to let it run a minute or so).

Big boring explanation of converting MB/s to Mbit and all of the other stupid data standards here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_rate_units

This is a well told story but when i ordered my BT HH5 i was one of the many where the HH order triggered an infinity 1 regrade for some fécking untold and unfathomable reason.

Despite being put back on Infinity 2 and having a max attainable rate of 110Mbit and the highest IP profiles the only speedtest that now gives 75Mbit is the BT one.

All other speedtests and real world downloads (including a variety of Linux distros) give a maximum download of 4.8MB or looking at it another way the Infinity 1 speed of 38.4Mbit.

Therefore my only conclusion is the BT Wholesale test bypasses any restrictions or limits imposed on your line and in essence gives a false result.

Previous to the BT HH5 order i spent 2 very happy years at 75/18.

I had a very similar thing happen to me last year with the HH3 but it was the Upload was being restricted, It should have been around 16mb and it was holding mine down to around 9.5mb.

In the end I bought a Western Digital n750 dual Band router when they were on offer in PC World for about £17 (hated the Home Hub anyway!) and hey presto my upload was back to 16mb!.

When I switched from BT to Plusnet in December I refused all offers of a new router, kept my WD n750 and haven't had any problems. In fact since I got my n750 my connection has increased from 60/16 to 67/17, not a huge jump but at least it's stable.

I haven't ever had a decent router supplied by any ISP since ADSL started, their main concern with the equipment they supply these days is locking it down so that you can't use any other firmares rather than good reliable performance.

Also try this BT speed tester. http://diagnostics.bt.com/login/?workflow=Speed
I get an average speed of just over 65mb 98% of the time but during the Christmas holidays my speed droped to about 51mb for nearly a week.

Only works if you have a BT contract though. If you are with a BT Fibre Reseller (Plusnet, TalkTalk, Sky etc) it comes up with "Sorry there was a problem checking your details. Please check you have entered the correct telephone number and then press 'Start Test' again"

BT wholesale one works with every Fibre package they provide.
