Hi All

I got given one of these basic Android tablet 2nd hand from my sister, I only use it for tv catch up and BBC sport app. It says on the sky website that sky go is available on most android tablets 7" and above which this is. Sky go app installs fine but when i go to watch something it says it cant play on a rooted device? Anyone know what that means and is there anything I can do to get sky go. Or is it just not supported on this tablet?

you need to go back to your sister and find out who's rooted the tablet and see if they can un-root it for you if you're not sure how. Sky Go won't ever work on a rooted tablet for whatever ridiculous reason.

Rooting it basically means to give you full super user access. it give you more scope to do more things with it like removing some of the system apps you might not use.

I dont think she would of done that she hardly used it, she did reset it to factory settings when she gave it to me so id of thought it would of been ok, no big deal anyway still got the old laptop.

almost all of these cheap android tablets come rooted or partially rooted out of the box.

if it is a generic, unbranded device, might it be factory rooted?

the reason isn't all that ridiculous.
it's a stipulation set by the content owners to protect their content when being made available over the internet.

rooting a device gives you full super user access, and thus the possibility of intercepting the stream for "other means".

the same stipulation is imposed on iOS also.

They say that silverlight has been deemed secure enough to protect their content.

silverlight is a dead product, most are moving away from it gradually (netflix being one of the biggest).
besides there is no silverlight on android.

other tools are used to protect the content on your PC. those tools are not available on mobile platform.

Has drm and cryptography been included in html5? last I read they were lobbying the w3c.

Content protection in hmtl5 is going to become a very interesting issue, I feel we may end up with more propriety drm solutions running on top of html5. I.e like netflix forcing IE11 on windows 8.1 if you want to use html5.

Silverlight is going to remain for some time until the html5 mess is sorted out.
