Finally, some near-direct competition for the iPhone. An Android phone managing to fit top end power into a modest sized package.
I do hope there are no gotchas with this. Other than it not being not stock Android, certainly looks interesting so far. Samsung take note.

This will certainly give an indication of what market is still out there for smaller screens.

Puts Samsung, HTC, etc to shame. A proper Mini of the flagship, not just a smaller phone with worse specs but same price almost...

Why oh why do Sony lumber their devices with such big bezels? |

Quite babe from Sony I think to make such a costly handset with such a screen size, I have a feeling that it will encounter disappointing sales.

However, the Z an Z1 did well in the UK, but not the Z1 Ultra so I think it will sell well here. |

We shall see, I would be surprised that the ultra did overly well anywhere perusal poss a little too big.

After checking out the HTC One Mini, and deciding it wasn't much smaller than the HTC One but has worse specs, I will be visiting my local mobile phone shop to have a play with this very soon.
My HTC Desire S may finally be heading for the bottom draw. |

I predict the opposite (although i'm thinking more worldwide sales, not just UK).
However, the Z an Z1 did well in the UK, but not the Z1 Ultra so I think it will sell well here. But it's great news that we're getting the Z1 Compact in the UK. Last year, Sony did the same with the Xperia ZR (a smaller screened version of the Z, with bright colours and the same S4 Pro chipset, RAM, camera etc). Only difference, like the Z1 Compact, was a smaller battery and 720p screen. NONE of the UK operators were interested. They wanted a cheaper 4G/4G-ready phone and picked the Xperia SP. Not a bad phone, but still cut down in performance over the ZR. I feared we'd possibly see the same thing happen this time around, but common sense has prevailed. I hope and expect it to sell very well, as a lot of people thought the Z (and the bigger Z1) were too big. Despite the excellent performance, nobody will buy a Z1 if they want a smaller device. Sony needs to give people choices, but I don't believe it should be worrying too much about low-spec/budget models now you've got the likes of the Motorola G, unless Sony can afford to produce a decent spec device and sell it for a similar cost. |

The big bezels are for the waterproof and dust proof-ness. I'd actually take that combo rather than thinner bezels but not waterproof as it's always raining where I am.

I've not seen inside the Z1 but presume that when it got the higher waterproofing rating (in fact, going from water resistant in marketing to waterproof) the phone got better protection inside.
And as such, that takes up some of the space inside the casing and means no chance of an edge-to-edge display as seen on other devices from, say, LG or Motorola. I'm guessing here, but it's a logical assumption? |

Glass itself is intrinsically waterproof. You can create a reliable seal along the back or edge of a sheet of glass with a half millimetre thick rubber strip, or like some manufacturers do, by using an appropriate adhesive on the back.
There's nothing about a big bezel that makes it more "waterproof". It just makes for a generally more physically robust "outdoorsy" phone. |
