Jim's career was/is based on a type of humour that was kinda accepted by the TV-watching public in the 80s but has been found offensive and unfunny for quite some time now. From what had become a marginalised position, he was given the chance to maybe show a different side of his personality on Hell's Kitchen and endear himself to a new audience, but he instead made an ass of himself by the way he treated Brian Dowling and his generally unfunny, sometimes appalling, comments and behaviour. So he remained marginalised and unpopular, with a lot of people presumably just thinking he was a bit of a bigot.
He was then arrested under Operation Yewtree before being released as there was no evidence - how awful that must have been and not something you'd wish on your worst enemy. Can you imagine it being splashed all over the papers that you'd been arrested for such crimes, especially when you weren't guilty? I think that this probably led a lot of people to want to give him another chance on CBB........ I for one was sort of hoping that I'd like him in some way. I'm not saying that suffering a wrongful arrest makes someone's homophobic/sexist views suddenly alright, but I just felt that I wanted him to get some sort of break following what must have been an appalling year for him, and I was therefore hoping that he'd show a better side of his personality.
However, three days in, and I'm finding it really difficult to like him. I think he was snippy with Linda over the pillows, his F-off to Jasmine was completely uncalled for, and the "doggy fashion" comment made be wince. I'd also agree with what Linda said about him cutting in on her/ignoring her when she's talking. I just think he's coming across as a nasty piece of work and not someone who's in any way nice to be around. It's a shame, really, as this was a chance for him to wipe the slate clean and maybe have a fresh start.
