There really is no excuse (or hope) for Lamela now. That said, nobody played well and all the old failings back again. Too slow in the build up, giving the ball away in midfield and defensive frailty.

Soldado's decision in front of goal in the first half kind of encapsulates his time with us in a way.

The Soldado we originally signed would have tried to dummy the keeper or would have belted it around him into the back of the net.

The Soldado we've created wanted to let someone else do it.

Im going to give Jan the benefit of the doubt, I thought he looked absolutely knackered at the weekend and it showed tonight too. I was relieved to see him come off actually. When was the last time he had a rest?

Poch has made a complete mess of his team selections during our "cup runs".

If he picked a stronger team in the 1st leg against Fiorentina we could have been several goals up going into tonights match, then he could have afforded to drop a few players in resting the team for Sunday.

NOW, our whole season rests on one game against Chelsea.

Yep, it looked like another dysfunctional team selection.

I really can't blame the players; 6 changes for the first leg and a mashup for the second. Maybe there's a reason, I can't see it.

I've even started to think about his tactical changes. I'm sure that'll pass but atm, it's a bit ... wtf.

I couldn't understand the first leg team selection either. Made the second leg a far harder prospect. We had 64% possession tonight but couldn't even muster one goal. Shame Soldado fluffed our only real chance else we might of had a fighting chance.

Still, we know the team selection for the LC Final now!

Hardly a surprising result for us in all honesty. Seems once again we struggled to produce chances and individual errors cost us. Much as I hope we can repeat our performance against chelsea on Sunday I will be pessimistic and assume the worst. I just don't have faith that this squad can win when it matters most.

I have to disagree. Obviously I would personally be absolutely over the moon if we could win a trophy, we're still only 3 points off 4th place with 12 games to play. And out of those 12 games, NINE are against teams in the bottom half of the table. We'll also be able to play our strongest 11 (whatever that is..) in every game as well now that we won't have any more cup competitions to worry about.

It should certainly go without saying that I fully acknowledge it won't be easy, considering the other teams competing for the top 4 and also the players we have, but it's certainly not impossible with 36 points still on the table so we will have plenty left to play for if the cup final should go south.

I'm putting yesterday's result down to Poch's team selection over both legs and some of the players saving themselves for the LC final. The result seems bad but the game was closer than it looked. Fiorentina are not a better team than us but we just didn't produce in front goal.

I'm not writing of the season yet either though with 7 teams into 5 top finishing spots we need to have a blinding remainder of a season. For the LC final I just hope we are really up for it and play out of our skins. We are overdue another very decent game and if we can't get super-motivated for a final then the team might as well give up now. I also hope we get the first goal for once, so we have something to defend.

I did think there was certainly an aspect of some players with one eye on sunday's game as well.

But then I also think that the quality of the squad depth doesn't help either. I can certainly understand the level of rotation if you're in all competitions because you can't realisically have the same players playing in every single game, but when you've got a player like Eriksen and also a striker who's delivering as much as Kane is at the moment, you essentially need two of each of them so you can play them in the "B" team.

I kind of feel sorry for Soldado as well because he's probably dwelling on "that" miss as well this morning.

Still, if we need a pick-me-up, there's always the under 18's battering Ars*nal's U18's 4-1

Have to agree with Jason, yesterday was a poor performance and a poor result and over the two legs really its completely our own fault that we didnt progress, but I think some of the negativity that seems to have come out of it is a bit extreme.

As a team I believe we have played more games than any other in the Premier League so far this season. We have managed to keep ourselves in with a shot of fourth place, and get to the final of a cup competition whilst competing - albeit until recently in other cup competitions as well. When you take a long hard look at our squad, you have to admit that that is an achievement, as lets face it we are not exactly oozing with quality. We have a number of quality players, but other than that the rest dont exactly set the world alight.

Couple that with the fact that this is Pochs first season managing a European campaign and I think it will have been a massive learning curve for him and the players. It doesnt excuse the fact that we should have gone through last night, but all is not lost - even if we lose on Sunday.

Can't help thinking 'if only' for Soldado last night. He would of absolutely nailed that goal opportunity when he played back in La Liga. I was hoping European football would really suit his game but sadly this has to be his last season for us, as he is never going to rediscovery his scoring touch whilst he plays in a Spurs shirt.

Yup, its such a shame because ive just got this feeling that another team is going to get an absolute bargain and he will end up doing really well somewhere else, its just not happening with us.

I agree with both of you. I think it was all over for Soldado some time ago really because his confidence in front of goal has long gone.. I also do think that if he goes back to La Liga that he'll find it again because his game is better suited to that way of playing.

Poch could have helped him out by not dropping him as soon as he actually scored in a game as well. You could see he was buzzing after last week's goal, even though he didn't manage to get another one. Give him another go straight away in the next match and you may find it clicks - it may not, obviously, but at least give him a chance.

The main problem we'll have is getting a decent transfer fee for him. He's nowhere near worth what we paid for him and Levy isn't likely to let him go on the cheap.

Soldado is or soon will be 30 so nobody will want to pay a big fee for him. Like with Adebayor, Levy and Baldini are going to need to be a bit more creative other than demanding straight cash. I can see both of them being sold off relatively cheap but with add-ons based on appearances and/or goals. Alternatively, a player exchange deal. Would like to think these avenues are already being explored and that we are not going to wait until 31 Aug before doing anything.

Don't get me wrong, 4th would be great too, but you know my feelings on this subject, if I had to choose between 4th in the league or a trophy I choose the trophy every time...4th gets us money but no glory.

But im greedy so I want both the LC and 4th in the league.

How will the players ever get used to eachothers game if the manager keeps chopping and changing the team every week...it's mental.

I have a feeling Poch is one of those guys who likes to change things for changes sake.

Jihadi John Terry? Everyone knows he's a racist c**t but calling him that is a bit harsh even with his reputation ...

All reported fit for tomorrow, amazing that!

they've all been fit for a while now which is possibly the longest run i've known for the squad not to have any injury problems.

i was going to post earlier on how interesting things would be if results stayed the same and then united go and score twice!

could still be interesting if city beat liverpool though because if we then subsequently beat swansea in the week, we could potentially move above southampton.
