I'm certainly not saying i'm in any way unhappy with how things have gone (apart from the usual whinges that most spurs fans make from time to time ) and i know you're certainly both not implying that either, but it just kind of struck me more how different the two owners approaches have been when their net worth hasn't been that far apart.

It's fanciful thinking more than anything.

What Tottenham is achieving within conventional accounting principles and practices is remarkable - that table of net spend over recent seasons is actually pretty astonishing:

The team, the home grown players, the manager, the Academy. Soon it'll be the Lodge and the new stadium.

For sure it's taken Levy and Lewis a lot of time but jesus christ .. they're the Bill Nicholson of our age.”

You must be living in a different universe if you really think this. Bill
Nicholson was a legend - Levy is a joke
Just look at the number of trophies we have won under him compared to the great Bill

It's an interesting contrast when you look at how close they are in terms of wealth - obviously £400 odd million isn't "close" in the strictest of terms. Abramovich has poured money in to Chelsea and transformed them in to the club they are today. He's never really baulked at authorising bringing in world class names (and Torres ) and paying them world class wages, and while we've certainly had the money to spend over the years, we've also been run as much as a profitable business instead of a football club at times.

I suppose maybe the difference is that Abramovich has got a steady supply of oil money, so won't likely take that much of a hit on his overall worth.”

From memory, I think there was a far bigger gap in net worth (Abramovich being richer), when each person bought their respective clubs.

Rather than net worth or income streams, isn't the difference in financial approach just down to the way Abramovich & Lewis view Chelsea & Spurs - plaything vs investment.

If you buy a house to live in and enjoy, you're far more likely to spend money on it, as opposed to buying a house just to make money on. Any unnecessary investment just ebbs away at your profit.

Purely as a question - What do Spurs fan want in the future, when ENIC sell up to realise their profit? Will they be happy to be sold to a hedge fund etc or would they rather be sold to a benefactor and the pros and cons they bring. Keeping the moral high ground doesn't win any extra trophies.

Everyone assumes Lewis will sell once the new stadium and long-term sponsorship is in place.

Joe Lewis is getting older: what does selling gain him - another billion he can't spend.

Sure he might sell but these guys are smart, invested in the club and seemingly in the wider area around the ground. It's possible Lewis might decide to do something radical and create a legacy that will last - maybe some kind of trust.

The other side of the coin is, why hasn't the 'you can't take it with you' attitude resulted in an Abramovich style spurge either on players or a new stadium? I think Levy has shares in ENIC, so he's still got plenty of time to spend the hundreds of millions of pounds that he would gain from a sale.

As for a legacy in Tottenham, ENIC were willing to move the club to Stratford not so long ago.

However, you may be completely right Andy-B. Maybe Joe Lewis is waiting for the right coach to get behind and is going to gift Pochettino a Gareth Bale for Xmas, just to make sure Spurs win the title this season.

Yes please santa

Some interesting quotes coming out of the fans' forum from Poch, Levy and Hugo.

Bill Nick didn't have to contend with a 36,000 stadium and your closest rivals having a £100 more a season income, or in the case of Chelsea and Citech effectively unlimited income.

This is the most transformational era in the history of the club. After this almost anything is possible.

Why? because Lewis and Levy are local boys i.e. Londoners who grew up supporting their local football team not using a $billion wank rag to announce themselves into a new society.

What happened at Citeh and Chelsea had very little to do with football, hence the disregard for conventional accounting - both clubs could have operated as normal going concerns (albeit with difficulty at Chesea). But football and the love of a football club, was never the point.

If fans truly understood the finances of football, and the proportion of clubs that constantly make a loss even with record revenues, then chairmen like Daniel Levy would be given a lot more credit. we get a lot of criticism - much of it from our own fans - for having a zero net-spend, as though that's somehow a bad thing. loss-making isn't sustainable, so this idea that everyone should just spend beyond their means is pure lunacy.

Apparently Mason is out at the weekend, Shouldn't be a massive problem with Alli back from suspension though. Bentaleb and Chadli are said to be close to resuming full training as well.

I really, really don't fancy this. Looking at the fixtures, it's a week we could fall behind as well ...

But then I think about the midfield three and Alli being back, and how tight the defence has been (Walker aside), and Harry and Chris ... even when I don't fancy us I now think we can do it anyway

Well these are the games we're going to need to win if we're realistically going to be in with a shout of the top 4 at the end of the season. west brom's home record this season hasn't been brilliant, although their last home game was a 2-1 win against the champions-elect so I guess we have to be a *bit* careful

i know this unbeaten run is going to end at some point, so if it's going to be this weekend I guess it could be worse - sunderland could certainly cause ars*nal some problems and the spammers could also do the same with united.

ahh none of this matters anyway, we all know we're going to win 8-0

I'm not entirely sure why anyone would be overly concerned about West Brom away. We could lose yes, you can lose any game, but going on what's happened so far this season, there's no logical reason to be worried about it.

I can imagine a few goon supporter said that 2 weeks ago. It's a smart Pulis team with a bit of guile and proper pace that won't stand off. They will be in your face and alert to everything.

Would a single West Brom player get into the Spurs side? I think this game and the next few will decide whether Son can be relied on to get goals, i think this is a big game for him.

Would a single Stoke player get in the Citech training ground? 2-0 after 20'. Game on.

Historically, teams like West Brom, Leicester, Stoke e.t.c.. have always caused us problems. They run and press and run and run and throw bodies behind the ball all day. It's not pretty but it does the trick of throwing us (and plenty of other teams i guess..) off their games and they exploit it with set pieces or rapid counter attacks.

If we can handle the game today and get the win then I certainly think i'll be slightly more confident about games like this going forward.

Alli and Lamela back in for Mason and Son.

looks windy there - hopefully we don't get any freak 45 yard own goals or something like that!

you can see the west brom strategy already - as soon as a move breaks down, every player trots back to their half to shut up shop again
