Well here we are again at deadline day.

I actually don't expect a lot of business except for, hopefully, N'Koudou finally being officially confirmed and N'Jie going the other way. I imagine we'll likely complete the Lopez signing as well.

Sonny might also go, but i'd be surprised.

Isco would be amazing but Real seem to only want to let him go out on loan with no option to buy so i think even if he was willing to join us, I doubt Poch would just bring him in for a season so I can't see that happening.

Sissoko and Zaha also highly unlikely I think.

So I'm planting my flag on two in and one out. Any surprises are, obviously, most welcome

We seem to have turned down the bid for Sonny which might be an indication that we haven't lined up anyone else to come in.

Still if there is going to be a last minute surprise, my money is on Sissoko. He hasn't played for Newcastle so far which is usually an indication that they are seriously considering offers for him. According to the press, there are three clubs in the running for his services but he wants a club that can offer Champions’ League action. Levy though is not willing to pay anywhere near the reported £34m asking price. Lets see what today brings (or not)!

With their tiny squad at least Mason will be guaranteed first team football. Its strange to think how things quickly change. It was only a season or so ago when Mason and Bentaleb were our preferred CM pairing in the middle of the park, Chadli was playing out on the left and Lamela was looking like he couldn't adapt to the demands of the Premiership.

I suppose we'd have to hope them signing Yedlin would be enough of a sweetener for them to reconsider but I can't see it happening. They don't have to sell and after a bit of a shaky start, they've won 4 on the trot so whatever Rafa is doing is starting to work so Sissoko might be persuaded to stick around if he thinks they'll go straight back up.

It's interesting that Levy as got a lot off the wage bill this window - and that is often more then half the battle with freeing up money for new signings now.

Sure Wanyama, Jannsen and the new French punt have arrived but off the bill are Mason, Chadli, plus Phichard and Yedlin. Those three loans deals also make a diff: Benaleb, Fazio, Clinton.

Maybe I'm just trying to make a case for why Levy would push the boat out ... that £15 mill we paid for Dembele 4 years ago looks a lot like £25 mill this summer ..

Interesting; Sky report a real bid for Sissoko while there's a somewhat credible dummy story planted in Bild about a comparable German kid: something to make Mike Ashley think a little in the haggling, perhaps ..

If the two are linked it suggests planning and Levy being serious .. poss in part due to Poch and his weekend sub .. the game is very definitely afoot

So looks like he could be going somewhere at least. I'm sure I read last night that if we didn't sign anyone else today, we'd actually only be in transfer deficit of around a million as the money from the sales has covered 99% of the outlay for Janssen and Wanyama.

According to a journo from the Newcastle Chronicle, apparently the price is £30 million which can be made in staged payments if need be and it's a take it or leave it deal. Considering his market value is said to realistically be more around the £12m mark, will we pay it ?

He's a £25 mill plus player all day long. The only issue is he's top end of the age range at 27.

At £25 mill you'd snap Ashley's arm off. The extra is what a big club might/would pay to get the right man - and he really is the right man for us (*us* being a top 4 club also in the CL).

We have our Schneiderlin he's called Dier / Wanyama. What we very urgently need is someone legitimately comparable to Demebele - for when he gorges eyes out And his name is Sissoko:

Schneiderlen's agent confirms he's staying at United and Isco looks set to return to Malaga so we're likely going to start the day with three potential targets and end with none.

No surprise really in seeing our targets fall by the wayside as once again we only seem to offer half of what the selling Club wants.

I'd be very surprised now if anyone apart from the young French lad comes in. If not, I predict we will struggle to maintain consistency and will be hovering around 6th to 10th in the EPL by Christmas. I also see us struggling to get out of our CL group.

We are 1 or 2 injuries to key players away from disaster. Much as I rate our youngsters I haven't seen enough from them in their few appearances so far to feel confident that they can yet step up to the plate when required. Maybe they will surprise me, I hope so, but I just don't see it. It looks like we are going to be relying on Eriksen, Kane and Lamela especially to all have exceptional, injury free seasons.

I hate being pessimistic but the lack of possible game changers in our squad has me worried.

I don't usually follow deadline day closely but I am enjoying the conceit that Levy - and all managers/owners - are conducting business in a room full of *journalist*.

The standout for me is that any genuine information is almost literally gold dust and almost everything written is click bait to challenge another rags click bait.

Didn't we just get £12 or £13 million for Chadli and Mason and the talk is that Bentley could be £17 million if his loan is successful. None of them are "worth" that money but with bang average players going for anything between £25 and £45 million now, our (sorry Levy's) usual trick of offering low teens plus add ons is even less likely to bring in the players we need. I'm hope to be proved wrong but I don't expect N'Koudou to be any better than Chadli or N'Jie.

Well Chadli, Mason and Pritchard brought in £35m combined.

Janssen is said to have cost £18.5 million and Wanyama £11m so that's £29.5 million so we're actually £5.5m up. That's not including the fee for Dominic Ball (which won't be that much to be fair..) and also for Yedlin to Newcastle as well.

But you're right about Levy. If someone quoted him £1 for something, he'd offer them 50p. In installments

Anyway, Isco has confirmed now that he's going nowhere so add that to Schneiderlin apparently not moving either so we're down to Sissoko. Who's going to Chelsea apparently !

Agreed. Only we could be in the champions league, yet end the transfer window weaker then when we started it. We're in the champions league for gods sake but a look at our squad just screams Europa all day long. Levy cant get away with offering peanuts to clubs when the clubs know we have money. The market has changed, and while im not saying you blow £100m to compete, there simply HAS to be some level of acceptance that all the teams around us are strengthening, and we are not just standing still, we are going backwards.

Forget competing to win the league, its like we are not even bothering to compete for top four, so yet again we drop down to the Europa (at best) and then it gets harder to attract better players, and the best players we do have end up leaving for champions league football and higher wages. And so the cycle continues. Back to square one.


Players will get injured. It happens to all clubs. We cant cry when it happens to us. You need a squad of quality to cope. Take just one player, Dembele for example - the stats show that without him we sink like a stone. We could easily pick up more injuries, suspensions this year.

Its all so disheartening. Yet predictable.
