If EastEnders does move to 5 nights a week (this has been speculated for years but never comes into fruition), I can see a Wednesday night looking like this in Autumn:

7.00pm The One Show
8.00 EastEnders
8.30 Dickensian
9.00 The Apprentice

That is already a much stronger Wednesday night line up than we've had since, well the last time The Apprentice was on.

ITV does inc HD, ratings are NOT tape checked”

Yes its poor stuff. Fanbase is everything it seems, City are playing some champagne football at the moment and are the team of the moment. Casual viewers not bothered by that though. ITV might be gutted about the figure (less than Waterloo Road overall) but may be not so much about being dumped from the whole thing.

Some poor figures almost all round. Bake off making its presence felt and Eastenders suffering. Viewers not filling their seats early for the build up to the Coronation Street event which presumably means Monday will see a big peak but then drop off very quickly. Soaps have it tough these days, you cant have a landmark death (or landmark anything) every week.

The Chase looks low, Pointless really seen to thrive by being constantly there, whether its public or celebrity. Weakest Link lasted for years and years but I never ever understood why it did so well-Pointless is showing the same signs of longevity but its a much stronger format imo.

But it's always a work in progress? It never stops.

I think you're being picky to be honest. It'll never be perfect and never was! There's a few little things to sort out but for the average viewer i think these are not really a problem.

And it's not like DTC hasn't instilled absolute faith in a vast majority of people he can deliver. He's not dropped the ball on one thing i can think of so far to my taste anyway.

Indeed. Even 4-5 million would do it.

And time it for the launch of +1 so that any attempt to sabotage the launch by ITV by scheduling clashes with the other soaps is rendered impotent.

The BBCs Dickens soap sounds like a Hollywood "high concept" piece of junk.

Gimmicky. It's got built in marketing appeal, but is a trash concept not worthy of the BBC.

Rather than develop that thing why not an original take on that period of time? Maybe in the modern age to show that nothing really changes.

I think this is why "EastEnders" should build in a landmark episode. Its consistent but there is nothing to say viewers haven't tuned out on a long term basis. You need a hook to bring them back in and that's not just Danny Dyer or Lindsey Coulson acting her socks off because its not event must see television that audiences have become so familiar with. I think attention spans and flexiabilty are damaging the soap audience. If its not exciting enough for viewers to put down their I pads or tablets for then its not worth tuning in for.

There's the spirit! Write something off as junk and slag it off before it's even aired. How do you know it won't be the most innovative piece of television you've ever seen? That's why nothing succeeds these days, people never want to give anything a decent chance. Yes, it might be terrible. But equally it might be superb. Why don't we wait and see?

And it certainly would have to be in completely different form (including the name). Eldorado is arguably the most panned and derided programme in tv history.

"Death In Paradise" works well because its so sunny and viewers like its lightness and easy watch at this time of year. I reckon a soap on that level could work. If not "Eldorado" then Cornwall or Jersey? Without the storm damage story lines

Its such a controversial programme its initial audience would be huge. The media had a field day with it so would be interested to see it rebooted and on top form with great writers and cast but I would keep it to just stories on the British ex pats this time! No foriegn language sequences!

Thanks Mike.

EastEnders holding up much better than I expected. Live At The Apollo should be at 10.34pm.

I love Dickens novels, Bleak House a few years ago was a landmark adaptation played out like a soap twice weekly.

However at first glance I agree with you , it looks a bit weird to me.

I think the Autumn would be too soon unless it was agreed to go five nights now. When it went four nights in 2001 the production team had a whole year to prepair for it.

Have to say " Bleak House" was great! It did good business for the audience figures too but "Little Dorrit" then collapsed and they didn't do any more

Well you definately cant right something off till you seen it - but it does sound wierd. Infact a Dickensian soap opera sounds OK but the characters from Dickens novels all living in the same stratosphere doesnt sound like mass appeal which surely all soap operas are supposed to be - and just when would you schedule it?

Little Dorrit was nowhere near as good as Bleak House though. Bleak House was a masterpiece. Why don't they repeat it on Sunday afternoons?

As Tony Jordan is in the driving seat on this, I have a bit of faith it will be good. People do know Dickens characters so the mass appeal is there. It obviously won't be advertised as a soap and will be promoted to the stage that we've convinced ourselves that it's been on for years!

It's up there, but there are plenty of other disasters out there too!

In it's favour though is it's built a huge cult over the years.
It ended strongly. It left people wanting more not less.
It would be brave daring crazy and utterly genius to revive it

Iv got the box-set and I agree its brilliant. Bleak House though does lend itself to that twice weekly format better than most-its a really atmospheric gripping story with some great characters.

I wouldn't trust that. I've heard nothing from C5 via e-mail and Digiguide has not been updated with this information.

Scheduling deadline was yesterday so all magazines would be wrong. Plus they have NCIS starting on January 29 which is another of the channel's biggest shows.

No more soaps! We have enough. What we DO need more of us variety in schedules. Sitcom, drama, 30 minute quizzes.
